Papa Smurf ousted as write-in candidate for Dodge County Board Fri, 04 Apr 2008 09:58:00 CST JUNEAU Papa Smurf wont be in the running when the Dodge County canvass board meets next week to determine the winner of the Countys 29th supervisory district seat. The patriarch of the Smurf clan was among four write-in candidates penciled in Tuesday during the spring election for the 29th District race. There were no candidates listed on the ballot, however, County Clerk Karen Gibson said that 15 write-in votes were cast for the position. Eleven of the 15 ovals were filled in with no name written on the line below. However, four write-in votes did have names that each received one vote each: Dean Fuller, Duwayne Schelter, Scott Fairbank and, of course, Papa Smurf, Gibson said. While Papa Smurf was crossed off the list, Gibson sent letters to Fuller, Schelter and Fairbank, inviting them to participate in the canvass board meeting at 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 7, in the county clerks office, where a winner will be chosen by lot and certified. The supervisory seat in the 29th District has remained vacant since supervisor Deborah Rathermel of Waupun stepped down before the end of her two-year term. The seat represents the First and Third Wards in the city of Waupun.
Squabble over dog poop results in citation Fri, 04 Apr 2008 11:46:00 CST WAUPUN A squabble over dog feces littering the yard of a Waupun residence got messier after a pushing match ensued during an argument on April 1. Waupun police were called to a duplex on South State Street at about 2:22 p.m. to respond to a complaint by a tenant of the duplex. A 28-year-old Waupun man said he was tired of garbage lying around the residence and was especially irritated by a mess left in the front yard by the dog owned by the other tenant of the property, a 32-year-old Waupun man. An hour later, the 28-year-old arrived at the Police Department to file a complaint alleging that the 32-year-old man pushed him during an argument about the feces and garbage. The 32-year-old man was issued a city citation for disorderly conduct.

font color20229CAround the nation: font colorblackRemembering Martin Luther King Jr. font colorblack Fri, 04 Apr 2008 09:01:00 CST font colorblackMEMPHIS, Tenn. On the 40th anniversary of his assassination, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is to be honored as a champion of peace in the city where he died. BR BR Here was a man who understood nonviolence at a depth that I had never known before, said C.T. Vivian, a former King associate. BR BR Presidential candidates, civil rights leaders, labor activists and thousands of citizens were expected to come together Friday in Memphis to honor King for his devotion to racial equality and economic justice. BR BR The whole nation flinched when King was killed by a rifle shot on April 4, 1968, said writer Cynthia Griggs Fleming, one of the many historians, commentators and activists in town for panel discussions and lectures on Kings legacy. BR BR King advised his followers to keep working for equal rights for all citizens, to keep on moving, no matter what obstacles they faced, Fleming said in a talk Thursday at a Memphis church. BR BR Dont be so consumed by the pain that you dont hear the message, she said. Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and John McCain were scheduled to take part in the anniversary day events that were to include a recommitment march through Memphis and the laying of wreaths at the site of Kings assassination. Sen. Barack Obama will be campaigning in Indiana. BR BR King was cut down on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel while helping organize a strike by Memphis sanitation workers, then some of the poorest of the citys working poor. BR BR His son, Martin Luther King III, wrote in an opinion piece published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday that the nation is still plagued by poverty. He urged presidential candidates to vow to appoint a cabinet-level officer who would help the poor. BR BR Were not doing anywhere near enough, he said Friday during an interview with his sister, Bernice, on the Today show. BR BR The National Civil Rights Museum opened in 1991 at the former motel, which now holds most of the exhibits tracing the history of Americas struggle for equal rights. The museum also encompasses the flophouse across the street from which confessed killer James Earl Ray admitted firing the fatal shot. Ray died in prison in 1998. BR BR King was a champion of nonviolent protest for social change, and his writings and speeches still stir older followers and new ones alike, said Vivian, who helped organize lunch-counter sit-ins in Nashville in 1960 and rode on a freedom bus through Mississippi. BR BR The world still listens to Martin, he said. There are people who didnt reach for him then who reach for him now. They want to know this man. What did he say What did he think BR BR Other tributes were being held around the country. In Congress, House and Senate leaders and lawmakers who once worked with the civil rights leader marked the anniversary with a tribute Thursday in the Capitols Statuary Hall. BR BR Because of the leadership of this man we rose up out of fear and became willing to put our bodies on the line, said Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., a companion of King in the civil rights struggles of the 1960s. BR BR In Indianapolis, Ethel Kennedy was scheduled to make brief remarks during a ceremony Friday evening at what is now Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Her late husband Robert Kennedy gave a passionate speech there the night of Kings assassination that was credited with quelling violence in the city. BR BR In Atlanta, the Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site was commemorating the anniversary with the opening Friday of a special exhibit chronicling the final days and hours before Kings death, as well as his funeral procession through his hometown five days later. BR BR The centerpiece of the exhibit is the wagon that was drawn by two mules as it carried Kings casket from his funeral at Ebenezer Baptist Church to Morehouse College, his alma mater. BR BR Memphis has also been in the news lately because of the success of the Memphis Tigers, who play UCLA in the national NCAA Division I college basketball semifinal in San Antonio on Saturday. Coach John Calipari had copies of Kings I Have a Dream speech for his players to read after practice Wednesday, along with a King biography, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson met the team for a personal history lesson.
