| 8 families displaced by Ripon apartment building blaze Sat, 05 Apr 2008 14:30:00 CST RIPON The Fond du Lac County Red Cross Chapter is assisting five of eight families displaced by an early morning fire in a Ripon multi-family apartment building. Several people were forced to exit the building from balconies and through windows and were rescued by firefighters from the Ripon Fire Department, said Fire Chief Mike Fredricks. Some apartment residents were treated for smoke inhalation at a nearby hospital, he said. The Red Cross disaster team is providing food, shelter and clothing for the families and also responded to the scene of the blaze, according to local Red Cross communications and community relations director Jamie Hack. The Ripon Fire Department was called out at about 1 a.m. Friday to Ripon Manor, 560 N. Douglas St. A lower apartment was engulfed in flames, Fredricks said, and firefighters broke into teams to rescue people from the building and extinguish the blaze. The fire was contained in the lower apartment, due to the drywall, Fredricks said, but the building was filled with heavy smoke. There were people still inside and hadnt woken up to the smoke alarms, he said. We had to roust some of them and take them off of two balconies and through windows. The resident of the burning apartment also escaped unharmed, he said. The blaze was under control in about 20 minutes, according to the fire chief. Firefighters remained on the scene until 3:30 p.m. Ripon police assisted at the scene. The fire remains under investigation. |
| EPA selects cleanup plan for Mercury Marine Cedarburg site Sat, 05 Apr 2008 14:54:00 CST CEDARBURG The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected a $2.7 million cleanup plan for the Cedar Creek Mercury Marine Plant 2 Superfund site in Cedarburg. A comment period including a public meeting was held in October 2007. EPA, in consultation with Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, evaluated four cleanup options and selected Option 4, which involves excavation of shallow and subsurface soil at the Plant 2 site plus ground-water monitoring, the EPA said in a press release. A separate plan to address ground-water contamination will be done at a later date. PCBs from two local companies now-closed Amcast and Mercury Marine contaminated Cedar Creek (from below the Ruck Pond Dam to its intersection with the Milwaukee River), the Plant 2 property, the former Amcast property and some nearby private properties, the EPA said. EPA Superfund involvement at the site began in 2003. Mercury Marine and Wisconsin DNR began studying the site in 1983. PCBs were once widely used by industry as coolants, insulators and lubricants. The manufacture of PCBs in the United States was stopped in 1977, but the compound stays a long time in the environment. PCBs are linked to cancer, as well as reproductive and developmental problems in people and animals. PCB-contaminated river sediment affects fish, wildlife and people as it rises through the food chain. In the 1970s, Wisconsin advised residents not to eat fish from various rivers throughout the state because of the contamination. The advisories are still in effect. Copies of the study that details EPAs final cleanup plan, the Record of Decision and other site documents are on the Web at http://www.epa.gov/region5/sites/cedarcreek and on file at Cedarburg City Hall, W63 N645 Washington Ave., and Cedarburg Public Library, W63 N583 Hanover Ave. Questions may be directed to EPA Community Involvement Coordinator Susan Pastor, 800-621-8431, ext. 31325, or pastor.susan@epa.gov. |
