State heads to record gas prices FdL at $3.42 Tue, 08 Apr 2008 09:54:00 CST Its time to brace yourself for higher gas prices. A spot check showed prices at $3.42 per gallon of regular gas in the Fond du Lac area on Monday. Prices rose to a record $3.46 in Eau Claire. They also were close to record marks in Wisconsins other metropolitan areas, while topping a national record. According to the AAA daily fuel gauge report, a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Eau Claire was 70 cents cheaper a year ago and 24 cents cheaper last month. The Green Bay market, the closest market to Oshkosh that AAA surveys, was at $3.35 per gallon of regular on Monday, 9 cents below the record set May 31, 2007, and up 25 cents from a month ago and up from $2.73 a year ago. The price for diesel fuel in the Green Bay area hit a record at $4.12 on March 22, and was at $4.05 on Monday. Elsewhere in the state, gas prices were 7 cents below the record in the Janesville-Beloit market, 5 cents below in Madison, 4 cents below in Milwaukee and 3 cents below in La Crosse. Regular grade gas was spotted at $3.49 per gallon at some Milwaukee stations over the weekend. We have strong supplies and weaker demand, and were still seeing prices climb, which is ... distressing to consumers who are paying more each week, Pam Moen, a spokeswoman for the state chapter of AAA, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. To see a decline, we need a prolonged drop in the price of crude oil and wholesale prices.

2 young sisters die in house fire in Clark County Tue, 08 Apr 2008 10:13:00 CST WILLARD, Wis. (AP) Two young sisters died in a fire that injured five others at a town of Seif home about six miles southwest of Willard, Clark County authorities said Monday. The sheriffs department identified the victims as 3-year-old Qunita Frenn and 1-year-old Latti Frenn. Four adult relatives who tried to rescue the children suffered burns and smoke inhalation and were taken by ambulance for treatment, Sheriff Louis J. Rosandich said. A firefighter also was injured. The four adults who tried to save the children were their grandparents and two aunts, coroner Richard Schleifer said. Three people were admitted to Memorial Medical Center in Neillsville from the fire scene, and two others were treated and released, said hospital spokeswoman Laura Wagner. The children were trapped in an upstairs bedroom when authorities received a call Sunday at 11:22 p.m., Rosandich said. Deputies arriving on the scene 11 minutes later could see flames shooting out of the upstairs bedroom window. They entered the home and tried to enter the bedroom, but it was already engulfed in flames. The cause of the blaze was not immediately determined, but investigators had ruled out arson, Neillsville Fire Chief Matt Meyer said. Autopsies were planned on the two children, Schleifer said.

Milwaukee reporter wins Pulitzer Prize Tue, 08 Apr 2008 10:15:00 CST MILWAUKEE (AP) Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Dave Umhoefer won a Pulitzer Prize on Monday, the first time the newspaper has been awarded journalisms top honor since Milwaukees two daily papers were combined in 1995. Umhoefer won in the category of Local Reporting for his investigative report that detailed pension deals for county workers. Everybody was high-fiving, hugging, Umhoefer said, describing the newsrooms reaction when the list of winners was announced about 2 p.m. It was a little bit of a mob scene. Then the champagne came out. Umhoefer, 47, called the award a huge surprise. The La Crosse native said he had never fashioned his career around the goal of winning a Pulitzer. I just think local government is important. Ive always prided myself on giving people the best report on it that I could, he said. Its not typically the route to a national prize. In a story published last summer, Umhoefer showed how hundreds of county workers illegally boosted their pensions by as much as hundreds of thousands of dollars. The employees took advantage of an obscure program that violated county laws and federal tax rules, according to Umhoefers story published July 28. Through a roundabout financial process, workers and ex-employees were allowed to tack on extra years of service by paying to convert ineligible service into pension-worthy time. One county worker paid $683 to convert into pension-eligible time, which bought her a pension increase of $9,000 per year, Umhoefer found. In all the program cost the county an estimated $50 million. The story produced results even before it ran. Prompted by Umhoefers line of questioning, county officials admitted to the Internal Revenue Service that at least 200 of the conversions were improper. The county also hired two attorneys, both former federal prosecutors, to investigate. Journal Sentinel editor Martin Kaiser said he was especially proud that his staff was being recognized for its local coverage. The essential role of newspapers is to be a watchdog, and weve really tried to make that part of our culture here, Kaiser said. Weve got such strong people that if you give them time to do something, theyre going to do something really good, something that can compete with the best newspapers. Umhoefer earned his journalism degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983. He has covered politics and public affairs in a number of positions over a 20-year career. I dont think this will change anything, Umhoefer said of the prize that carries a $10,000 award. Im just a nose-to-the-grindstone kind of guy thats not going to change. The Wisconsin State Journal in Madison was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist in the Editorial Writing category. It was recognized for its persistent, high-spirited campaign against abuses in the governors veto power, according to the Pulitzer Prize Web site. I am totally awed by my staff, State Journal Editor Ellen Foley said. To compete with all of these big papers and then come up as finalists, Im just very, very proud of our journalists. The Pulitzer Prizes are awarded each April by Columbia University. The Milwaukee Journal had won five Pulitzer prizes before it combined with the Milwaukee Sentinel in April 1995.
