If Packers were in need, Favre might think twice about retirement Wed, 09 Apr 2008 21:08:00 CST GULFPORT, Miss. If the Green Bay Packers are ravaged by injuries this season, Brett Favre might consider returning should the team reach out to him. It would be hard to pass up, I guess, he told the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun Herald. But three months from now, say that presents itself, I may say, you know what, Im so glad I made that decision. Im feel very comfortable in what Im doing and my decision. Yeah, I can probably be up there doing that and playing, but again, I dont know. Its only speculating. I think the world of that team. I had a lot of fun, not only this year, but over my career. But if Aaron Rodgers went down with an injury Aaron has fallen into a great situation, Favre said. And if that opportunity presented itself and they did call, it would be tempting. And I very well could be enticed do it. Favre understands the kind of challenge he would face should he opt to go back to the NFL after ending his record-setting 17-year career. And he made it clear he is not changing his mind at this time. But to think that if they called me in October and told me, Hey, we need you this week. That would be hard, Favre said in a story that appeared on the papers Web site on Tuesday. Im sure mentally, I would be refreshed. Id be away from it for a long time. But mentally versus physically, the last thing Id want to do is go up and its Oh this is great and all that stuff and me be excited and then just flop. You just cant show up and play. There has been a steady flow of speculation that Favre would have a change of heart in the wake of the March 4 announcement the leagues only three-time MVP was retiring. I guess the best response would be, right now no, he said of a possible return to the game. Favre added he would not return unless he was in shape. It would be hard to go up there at 38. It was hard to stay in shape. I say that, I worked out and I worked out hard, he said. Week in and week out, I was just drained. Finally, for the first time, I felt, not that 38 is old, but I looked around at practice and these guys are bouncing around. And I practiced every day and all the time people would ask me ... How do you do it Inside Im saying, I have no idea. Its a struggle.

Officials weigh charges after 21-year-old likely drank himself to death Wed, 09 Apr 2008 13:59:00 CST A blood alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit appears to have caused the death of a Waupun man who died after a night of binge drinking on his 21st birthday last month. While officials await autopsy results to provide a concrete answer as to what killed Jesse Drews, Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls said alcohol poisoning was likely the cause. His blood alcohol concentration was .38 at the time of his death, Nehls said. The Waupun Police Department continues to investigate the death, which occurred after Drews spent the majority of his night out at a Waupun bar, police chief Dale Heeringa said. From there, officials will determine if any charges should be referred to the district attorneys office in connection with Drews death, he said. Everything is wide open at this point. Whatever options we have we are going to discuss with the Fond du Lac County District Attorney and the Dodge County District Attorney, Heeringa said. Drews was apparently drinking at a bar in Waupun in Fond du Lac County with friends after turning 21 at 12:01 on March 24. Four hours later, a family member found him unresponsive on a downstairs couch of his home, on Buckhorn Drive in Waupun, which is in Dodge County, Heeringa said. The police will also be asking the Waupun City Council to look into whether the liquor license for the tavern where Drews was drinking that night should be suspended or revoked, Heeringa said. Its a very sad, tragic event, he said.

DNR Rules meeting set Monday in FdL Wed, 09 Apr 2008 16:12:00 CST The annual Conservation Congress meeting in Fond du Lac County will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 14, at Theisen Middle School, 525 E. Pioneer Road. Similar meetings will be held in all Wisconsin counties on Monday. Residents will nominate and elect representatives to the Wisconsin Conservation Congress and express support or non-support for a range of advisory questions on conservation and natural resources management issues. The meetings across the state are held jointly with the Department of Natural Resources Spring Wildlife and Fisheries Rule Hearings. Citizens will have the opportunity to comment and register their support or non-support for congress proposals that someday could become the rules that regulate fishing, hunting, trapping and other outdoor recreation activities in Wisconsin. Citizens can also submit resolutions addressing conservation needs or concerns they observe. Results of the publics input on the proposals will be presented to the Natural Resources Board in May. If there is significant support for a proposal, the advisory question could become a DNR rules change proposal in following years. This year, the Conservation Congress will seek public input on 28 advisory questions on a range of topics, including: LI Use of rifles for deer hunting in Shawano and Dunn counties. LI Legislation to prohibit deer baiting and feeding statewide. LI Eliminating the option for future Managed Forest Law participants from closing their property to public recreational access. LI Begin the process to create a gray wolf harvest season. LI Phone-in turkey registration. LI Prohibition on the transportation of aquatic invasive species. LI Elimination of the barbless hook requirement for early season trout fishing. Two delegates to the Conservation Congress will be elected at the Fond du Lac County meeting. People with questions about Mondays meeting may contact Sherman Jacobson, chair of the Fond du Lac County Conservation Congress delegation, at (920) 922-9126.

Congressional committee to hold Great Lakes hearing in Wisconsin Wed, 09 Apr 2008 13:35:00 CST WASHINGTON - A congressional panel will meet in Green Bay next Friday to hear testimony on how lower water levels in Lakes Michigan and Superior have affected the economy and the environment. At the request of Rep. Steve Kagen, the House Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment will hold an April 18 field hearing at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. in the Phoenix Room in the University Union Building. The witness list for the hearing will be finalized next week, committee spokeswoman Mary Kerr said. Water levels for the five Great Lakes have fluctuated over the years partly because rising temperatures have accelerated evaporation and affected the amount of ice cover, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. Lakes Michigan and Huron have been particularly hard hit, according to the agency. This will be an important time for people in Wisconsin to voice their views, said Kagen, a subcommittee member. Kagen said the subcommittee also is interested in finding out more about the spread of non-native organisms and plants in the Great Lakes and in rivers nearby.

Alleged cattle rustler arrested Wed, 09 Apr 2008 10:57:00 CST Detectives corralled a cow caper Tuesday afternoon. Investigators arrested a 24-year-old Oakfield man at an area livestock auction after linking him to the theft of four heifer calves from two area farms, said Fond du Lac County Sheriffs Department Detective Chip Capoyianes Wednesday morning. The thefts occurred during the early morning hours Tuesday. Theft of livestock we dont see that very often, said Lt. Bill Flood. The man allegedly hoped to profit from the calves when he took the animals to Equity Livestock Yards in Lomira on Tuesday Heifer Day at the auction, Capoyianes said. Heifer calves can sell for $500 each, he said. He showed up to claim his money and we were able to get our bad guy, Capoyianes said. The man is accused of stealing one heifer calf from an Eden farm and three from an Oakfield farm and loading them into the back of his pickup truck early Tuesday, Capoyianes said. The ones he took were the size of a German shepherd, he said. The man allegedly intended to take more of the animals, but was unable to lift them. During transport, one of the calves jumped off the truck and was left behind. The calf was returned to the Oakfield farmer after an area resident found it and called the Sheriffs Department. A hunt for the remainder of the missing cows led detectives to Equity Livestock, Capoyianes said. The farmers have certain ways in place to keep track of their calves. They also have a certain entry process in place at the livestock auction, Capoyianes said. The suspect signed his name at the yards after he brought in the three calves. One of the calves had an identification tag on it. The man was arrested and is being held at the Fond du Lac County Jail on charges of felony theft of a domesticated animal, attempted theft and criminal trespass to land, Flood said. He admitted to taking the calves, Capoyianes said. He is expected to make an initial court appearance later this week.

Action: Hoerths offer indoor range, simulator, lessons Tue, 08 Apr 2008 16:10:00 CST If you follow the green arrows on Halbach Court in Fond du Lac, just past the Holiday Inn, you will find a hidden gem, overlooking busy U.S. 41. Established three years ago as a hobby-turned-business, Michael Hoerth, along with his wife, Barbara, and daughter, Becky, built an indoor golf center, complete with a 60-ft. putting green, indoor driving range, golf simulators and swing analyzer. The simulators feature a variety of golf courses from all over the world. As each hole is projected onto a large screen, the computer recommends a club and keeps track of measurements and calculations of each shot using a sensory pad with light sensors. The sensors pick up the golfers swing pattern, ball speed and direction and project it onto the screen. After the ball strikes the huge screen, the path of the ball is projected and glides, then rolls down the course, giving a real time effect. Fairly accurate, the simulator allows the golfer to experience a real golf game. Welcoming all age and skill levels, with no membership required, golfers can also receive lessons from Sandi Hamm, (AKA Sandi Bunker), a life member of the LPGA Teaching and Club Professionals, with 25 years of experience. Born and raised in the Fond du Lac area, Sandi credits her father, Bob Landreman, an avid and accomplished golfer from the area, for introducing her to golf as a kid. Sandis lessons are unique in that she teaches about the set up of an individual, showing the golfer that it is not about the ball, it is about the person. She will cover topics such as weight transfer, posture, swing path and grip pressure points. I have a lot of spirituality that motivates me to share my gifts with others, said Sandi. People that apply my lessonsthey get it They need to go inside themselves and ask, Am I aligned properly Does this feel right So many people spend thousands of dollars on lessons and learn nothing. My approach is different. Sandi discovered the driving range while driving south down U.S. 41 this past winter. I saw this sign for an indoor driving range in my hometown How intriguing Before the holidays, I came in and chatted and Mike said, Welcome aboard. I came with the idea of running clinics because I was going to be around the area for a while. This way I can promote the facility while giving local golfers the opportunity to improve their game, said Sandi. Both Becky and Sandi agreed that the driving range was Mikes pet, and to say the least, his passion. Golf is his release, and something he loves, said Becky. He wanted to be able to golf year round, be with friends and meet new people. Becky joked that building the driving range was her dads project for retirement, but knows that the range was something that they did together. Getting ready for a move to Colorado after recently finishing her masters degree, Becky looked at the range as something that was a part of her. This is something that my dad and I built from scratch. Its going to be hard to leave, for me and my dad, but I will definitely take a piece with me. Realizing that summer is just around the corner, Becky and Sandi know that most golfers will be heading to outdoor courses, but stress that using an indoor range year round does have its benefits. When theres inclement weather or its too muggy and buggy, why not come in to an air-conditioned facility, said Sandi. Just because its stopped snowing doesnt mean golfers cant come in and work on their swing or just hit a bucket of balls, said Becky. The Hoerths ask that appointments be made when using the golf simulators or swing analyzer, as well as to schedule lessons. To schedule a lesson with Sandi, golfers must call 602-2138 or e-mail sandi-bunker@hotmail.com. For more information about the driving range, visit: www.hoerthstorage.com and click on Indoor Driving Range and Golf Simulators.

Action: Be a Red Cross hero - Dine Out for Disaster Relief on April 10 at restaurants Tue, 08 Apr 2008 16:25:00 CST Fond du Lac County residents are encouraged to enjoy a warm meal at several area restaurants on April 10. On this day, restaurants participating in the Red Cross Dine Out for Disaster Relief Event have agreed to donate 10 percent of their food sales in order to aid in replenishing the chapters quickly-depleting disaster relief fund. Participating restaurants with warm hearts and warm meals are located in Fond du Lac, Ripon, Waupun, and Campbellsport. The restaurants include: Ala Roma, AW Drive Inn, Bagelmeister, Dominos, Dairy Queen, Fishermans Cove, and Sunset Supper Club in the Fond du Lac area. Culvers, Kristinas Caf, Fat Bruces, Dominos and Red Apple Restaurant are in the Ripon Area. Culvers, Dominos, Golden Cup Caf, Spirits, Tonys Pizza, Pizza Ranch and Helens Kitchen are in the Waupun Area. In the Campbellsport area, restaurants include The Lunchbox and Club 67. The public can help to raise donation dollars to support the disaster relief services that the local Red Cross Chapter provides 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Disaster fund replenishment is necessary at this time considering in the last four months, the FDL Disaster Action Team has responded to two multi-family home fires and has provided over $8,000 in financial assistance for just these two incidents alone. We are glad to be able to provide comfort to those who have lost everything, said Joyce Keyes, Disaster Action Team chair. The need for fund replenishment is most definitely needed though, taking into consideration that a total of $8,676 of financial assistance was provided by the Fond du Lac Red Cross in all of 2007, Keyes stresses. Funds donated from lunch or dinner will allow the Disaster Action Team to continue to provide shelter, clothing, food and other immediate necessities to those affected by house fires, tornadoes, flooding and other disasters, right here in Fond du Lac County. For more information on the Dine Out for Disaster Relief Event, please contact the Red Cross at 922-3450 or any of the participating restaurants for hours and locations.
