| Man arrested in connection with homicide Fri, 11 Apr 2008 16:31:00 CST Wisconsin Rapids police have arrested a person of interest in connection with last months homicide of Dale Meister. Meister, 35, was found dead at his Wisconsin Rapids residence March 4. Preliminary autopsy reports indicate he died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. A 48-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man was taken into custody Thursday on unrelated charges, Wisconsin Rapids Police Chief Kurt Heuer said. Officials are not releasing the mans name or details on the charges. The man did not make a court appearance on Friday. On Thursday, the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department, with assistance from the Department of Justice division of Criminal Investigation, State Crime Lab, Wood County Sheriffs Department, Portage County Sheriffs Department, Rome Police Department and specialty K-9 and technical assistance, served multiple search warrants in Wisconsin Rapids and one in Rome as part of the Meister homicide investigation, Heuer said. The Wood County Department of Social Services assisted in a related investigation. Evidence seized in accordance with the search warrants will be processed by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab, Heuer said. While a very complex investigation, there has been a very intense focus from the onset, Heuer said. Thursdays operation, conducted with multiple agencies, was the result of consistent, factual information developed in the investigation. Officials have filed a request for charges with the Wood County District Attorneys Office. On Friday, it was unknown when the unrelated charges would be filed against the man or when he would make an appearance in Wood County Circuit Court. |
| Pittsville boy rescued in fire dies Fri, 11 Apr 2008 16:05:00 CST Mason Stascak, 8, died Thursday at the University Hospital in Madison, according to an obituary prepared by a funeral home. Mason had been a patient in the hospital following a fire at his familys home at 5435 Second Ave., Pittsville, on Sunday. He was transported there after a short stay at Saint Josephs Hospital, Marshfield. He had been in critical condition at the time he was transported to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Madison. The hospital could not provide any further information. Buchanan Funeral Home, Pittsville, is in charge of arrangements but services have not been set, according to funeral home officials. Mason is the son of Jamie and Rachel Stascak. Masons death is the third fire-related fatality in the area this week. Lattie, 1, and Quinta Frenn, 3, were killed in a Sunday fire in their town of Seif home, southwest of Willard, in Clark County. Funeral services for the Frenn sisters were scheduled for today. |
