| March safest ever on state roads Sun, 13 Apr 2008 11:21:00 CST The end of a severe winter continues to show some benefits. With just 27 fatalities in 26 traffic crashes, last month was the safest March in terms of traffic deaths in more than 70 years, the state Department of Transportation said. Thats as long as the DOT has been keeping records. Last months figures compare with 58 deaths in 52 crashes in March 2007, and 99 deaths that were recorded in March 1970, said Dennis Hughes, chief of safety programs for the Wisconsin State Patrol Bureau of Transportation Safety. The five-year average for traffic deaths in March is 57, he said. Traffic deaths this year through March are 40 fewer than during the same period in 2007 and 45 fewer than the five-year average, Hughes said. In the first three months of the year, 113 people died in 108 Wisconsin traffic crashes during 2008, including 12 pedestrians and one bicyclist. In March, winter weather conditions were again a factor in reducing traffic volumes and speeds, which likely contributed to a drop in violent crashes that cause fatalities, Hughes said. Bad weather tends to make people stay home or drive more cautiously if they do travel. In coming months, however, driving will be even more dangerous as warmer weather leads to more vehicles at higher speeds on our roads. Drivers will need to be prepared for quickly changing traffic conditions, especially when the road construction season begins. They also must be vigilant in watching for more motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians on roadways. |
| Parents who prayed for childs healing could be charged in her death Sun, 13 Apr 2008 10:23:00 CST WAUSAU The Marathon County district attorney said she will review this week whether to charge the parents of a girl who died from untreated diabetes last month. Madeline Neumann, 11, died March 23 at her rural Weston home from an undiagnosed but treatable form of diabetes as her parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, prayed for her to get better. Her mother said she never expected her daughter, whom she called Kara, to die. Dist. Atty. Jill Falstad said she was not sure when she would reach a decision on potential charges. She had been waiting for completed police reports. Less than a week after the girls death, three of her siblings, ranging in age from 13 to 16, were removed from the home to stay with other relatives. That came after an agreement between the parents and social services experts that the move would be in the best interests of everyone, authorities said, adding the children were not in danger. The parents told investigators they did not know their daughter had diabetes and she last saw a doctor when she was 3 to get some shots. An autopsy determined Madeline died from diabetic ketoacidosis, an ailment that left her with too little insulin in her body. The case could be a landmark one in Wisconsin, said Shawn Peters, a University of Wisconsin-Madison scholar. He said state law allows for a range of charges, from none to homicide. Authorities learned of the case after the girls grandmother called a daughter-in-law, who then called police to report the girl was in a coma and needed medical help. |

| On eve of papal visit, survey finds need for stronger Catholic observance Sun, 13 Apr 2008 08:04:00 CST NEW YORK American Catholics said in a new survey they were pleased with the leadership of Pope Benedict XVI, ahead of his first visit to the U.S. since he was elected. The study also found intense interest in faith among some young people. Yet, few parishioners overall said they go to confession, and most believed they could be good Roman Catholics without going to Mass. The poll, released Sunday, was commissioned by the nations bishops and conducted in February by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University. San Francisco Archbishop George Niederauer, head of the bishops communications committee, was encouraged by the openness to faith in the survey but said it highlighted the need for better religious instruction. The challenge for church leaders, he said, is to help them see what Catholicism really means. Strengthening Catholic identity and observance are central themes of Benedicts papacy, and topics he is expected to address when he travels to Washington and New York starting Tuesday. In the survey, eight of 10 Catholics said they were somewhat or very satisfied with his leadership. Nearly half a million people sought tickets to his public events in both cities. The poll found that Catholics born before 1960 among the most faithful parishioners and those born since the 1980s have similar outlooks. For Catholics who attend Mass at least once a month, an overwhelming majority of the young and older generation believe Christ is present in the Eucharist. Even more, the younger, regular Mass-goers surpass their elders in observing Lent, with nearly all saying they abstain from meat on Fridays and receive ashes on Ash Wednesday. The young people are also more likely to consider devotion to saints very important to their faith. However, the study found that only 36 percent of the younger Catholics attend Mass at least once a month, compared with 64 percent of the older generation. Sixty-eight percent of all Catholics surveyed said they agreed that they believed they could be in good standing with the church without going to weekly Mass. The poll, Sacraments Today: Belief and Practice Among U.S. Catholics, found that nearly one-third of the nations 64 million Catholics attend Mass in any given week. That figure has remained the same in the last five years, according to the report. Thirty percent of the respondents said they go to confession less than once a year and 45 percent said they never go. Regarding the churchs social justice teaching, two-thirds of Catholics said helping those in need is a moral duty for Catholics. The survey also measured satisfaction with the American church hierarchy. Seventy-two percent of Catholics said they were somewhat or very satisfied with the bishops leadership, a 14-point jump since 2004, when the clergy sex abuse crisis was still roiling the church. |

| Final two suspects caught in rare coin heist attempt Sun, 13 Apr 2008 07:58:00 CST APPLETON The recent arrests of Menasha and Appleton men complete the roundup of five suspects police think were involved in the Nov. 8 attempted armed theft of rare coins in Ellington. Frank J. Kersten, 19, 604 Fifth St., Menasha, and Bobby Boshers, 41, 207 W. Foster St., Appleton, face preliminary hearings Monday and Tuesday, respectively, in Outagamie County Circuit Court. Both are charged with being a party to attempted armed robbery and armed burglary. Kersten also is charged with bail jumping. Outagamie County Court Commissioner Brian Figy placed the two on $10,000 cash bonds. According to court records, on the night of Nov. 8, two people one armed with a pellet gun burst into a home in the N2800 block of Mayflower Drive and knocked down the female member of the household. It was later learned the couple had responded to a newspaper ad a few weeks before the incident advertising the purchase of rare coins. The couple made contact with the advertised buyer about selling their collection. According to the criminal complaint, the person who placed the ad, Frank Dimatteo, 53, 717 Timmers Lane, Appleton, conspired to set up the robbery. Dematteo faces an April 28 preliminary hearing on a burglary charge. He remains in jail on a $5,000 cash bond. Also charged are: Myles Friebel, 19, 3347 Dekalb Lane, Neenah. Friebel is accused of being one of the two people who entered the house, although others involved offer different accounts as to who entered the house.
