5 hurt in school bus/garbage truck crash in Theresa Mon, 14 Apr 2008 22:31:00 CST THERESA Five people, including three children, were injured in a traffic accident involving a school bus and two garbage trucks Monday afternoon in the Village of Theresa. Theresa Police Chief Michael Simmons said an eastbound school bus was stopped on Mayville Street (Highway 28) near Highland Avenue around 3:55 p.m. to let off a student when it was struck from behind by a Waste Management truck that was hit by a second Waste Management truck. Both the school bus and the first Waste Management truck were stopped when for whatever reason, the second truck struck it from behind, said Theresa Officer Brian Frank, who was first on the scene. The driver of the second truck had to be extricated from the vehicle by rescue personnel from the Theresa Fire Department and was flown from the scene by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. The driver of the Lomira School District bus, a 75-year-old man, complained of head and neck pain and was transported to St. Agnes Hospital, Simmons said. A 14-year-old Theresa girl was exiting the bus at the time of the crash and later complained of minor injuries and was treated at the scene, said Simmons. A press release issued by the Dodge County Sheriffs Department said there were 11 students on the bus at the time of the crash. Two other students, in addition to the disembarking student, also suffered minor injuries. Dodge County Crash Investigation Team member Dennis Walston said the school bus had its warning lights activated and stop arm extended at the time of the crash. Assisting at the scene was the Dodge County Crash Investigation Team, Theresa and Mayville EMS and the Wisconsin State Patrol. The crash remains under investigation. More details of the crash will be released when they become available.

Ripon man to be sentenced for murder of his wife Mon, 14 Apr 2008 17:18:00 CST A 45-year-old Ripon man will be sentenced Tuesday morning for using a cinder block to murder his wife outside their home, 118 Hall St., in November 2006. Kevin Moore faces a mandatory life sentence. Fond du Lac County Circuit Court Judge Richard Nuss will preside at the 9:30 a.m. hearing. Moore has been in custody at the Fond du Lac County Jail since he was arrested for his wifes murder on Nov. 13, 2006. A jury found Moore guilty in January of first-degree intentional homicide for killing his wife, Dawn M. Moore, 43. The verdict was reached after more than two weeks of testimony. Dawn M. Moore was a Ripon High School and Marian College graduate. The Moores had a 4-year-old son, Carter, who is now being cared for by relatives. The prosecution contended during the trial that a fight over finances likely fueled Kevin Moores rage during the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 2006. The Internal Revenue Service placed a levy against the Moores accounts a short time before the murder, prosecutor Tom Storm pointed out during the trial. A fight started in the Moores home and moved outside to their detached garage, where Kevin Moore attacked Dawn Moore. Her body was found outside the garage after she suffered at least 13 blows to the head some of which came from a 45-pound cinder block, according to testimony at the trial. The defense contended that intruders, not Moore, went to the Ripon home in search of hidden money. Those intruders, attacked and killed Dawn Moore after she ran into them while leaving for work, defense Attorney Gerald Boyle said during the trial. The story will be updated on The Reporter Web site after sentencing is completed.
Waupun School superintendent leaving district for West De Pere Mon, 14 Apr 2008 15:59:00 CST WAUPUN John Zegers says he is not leaving his job as superintendent because of ongoing financial struggles in the Waupun Area School District. The districts chief administrator said his decision to take the top position with the West De Pere School District is not connected to the recently failed $10 million referendum in Waupun. It had nothing to do with the referendum. When I came to Waupun this was not my intention by any stretch of the imagination. But this is a career opportunity for me that I really couldnt pass up, Zegers told The Reporter on Monday. The fact that this job is right in my backyard, I hope that people understand that those kinds of opportunities dont come along very often. Bill Zeininger, human resource director for the Waupun Area School District, said Zegers will leave Waupun on June 30. According to a story in the Green Bay Press Gazette, the West De Pere School Board accepted Zegers letter of intent during a School Board meeting last week. He will take the place of outgoing Superintendent Lanny Tibaldo who is retiring this summer. Zegers was selected from a group of 20 candidates who applied for the position. West De Pere schools benefit from a more-secure financial position and a growing student body. Prior to taking the helm at Waupun in 2006, Zegers served as a principal at Kennedy Elementary School in Green Bay for 10 years. He served as administrator/principal of Notre Dame of De Pere, and also director of development and recruitment and English teacher at Abbot Pennings High School. He also was a director and physical education instructor at Notre Dame Middle School. Zegers doesnt believe that the budget crisis in Waupun will impact the search for a new administrator. Look around the state, there are a lot of school districts in that position. Its somewhat the climate of the superintendent position right now, Zegers said. Waupun Area Board of Education President Cathy Loomans couldnt be reached for comment.

Police bust underage party, make battery arrest Mon, 14 Apr 2008 13:14:00 CST Several underage drinking tickets were handed out and a 22-year-old Fond du Lac man was arrested on a battery charge after police busted a party on Rose Avenue early Saturday. Police responded to 142 Rose Ave. around 2 a.m. Saturday after receiving a noise complaint from a neighbor. While responding to the home, dispatch received a call from within the house, stating a woman was being beat up by her boyfriend, according to the Fond du Lac Police Department report. When police arrived, they heard what sounded like several people running down into the basement. A few people opened the back door where officers stood, and then closed it, according to the report. Police found several of the teens crawling out a basement window theyd apparently smashed out. Officers tried to control the scene while trying to get information about the domestic incident, according to the report. The woman was never found, but her 22-year-old boyfriend was arrested after police found a marijuana pipe in his pocket and learned from a witness that hed allegedly choked and punched his girlfriend, according to the report. The two had been arguing at the party. At least six underage drinking tickets were given to individuals whod been at the party, according to the report. Many individuals ran away before police could speak with them. The 21-year-old man who rents the home will be referred to the district attorneys office on a misdemeanor charge of providing alcohol to minors. The 22-year-old Fond du Lac man was taken to the Fond du Lac County Jail. Police plan to refer charges of battery and possession of drug paraphernalia against him.
Accused shoplifter collides with security officer in mall crash Mon, 14 Apr 2008 13:09:00 CST Police are looking for a 38-year-old Fond du Lac woman who ran into a security officer with her car after he attempted to question her about a shoplifting incident Friday afternoon at Forest Mall. The woman allegedly made a fraudulent return to Sears, 757 W. Johnson St., around 3:15 p.m. Friday, receiving in-store credit for items she never bought, said Lt. Steve Klein of the Fond du Lac Police Department. Apparently she took some merchandise from within the store and then went to return it, he said. She attempted to do the same thing at JC Penneys earlier that day, according to a Fond du Lac Police Department report. She returned around $200 worth of items she took from Sears, according to the report. When Sears employees couldnt find surveillance tape showing the woman stealing from their store, they granted the woman a gift card for the items, according to the report. On her way out of the mall, security saw that she was pushing her young child in a stroller that was allegedly stolen from Kohls and made attempts to stop and question her, according to the report. A 36-year-old security officer at the mall approached the woman, grabbing onto the stroller. The woman took her young child out of the stroller and grabbed her shopping bags. At that time, six stolen DVDs, valued at $80, fell out, according to the report. The woman then got into her car as the security officer grabbed onto her door, demanding the woman come back inside the mall, according to the report. She started backing out while the door was still open and in the process, the security guard got caught between the door and the car next to him, Klein said. The officer received minor injuries from the accident. The officer reports the woman did not put her young child into a safety seat and backed out at a high rate of speed, according to the report. The open car door hit two vehicles as the suspect quickly backed out, according to the report. Both vehicles were damaged. Police have not arrested the woman and are continuing their search for her, Klein said. The Fond du Lac Police Department has requested a warrant be issued for the womans arrest.

Public Enemies resumes, gunfire returns to Oshkosh Mon, 14 Apr 2008 15:46:00 CST The sound of gunfire returned to Washington Avenue about 2 p.m. as the filming of Public Enemies resumed with a getaway scene. A car with a camera mounted in front of it rolled westbound on Washington Avenue as guns blazed. A crowd of onlookers ran through the parking lots south of the set, hoping to get a glimpse of star Johnny Depp when the scene ended near State Street. Earlier in the day, an armed man standing on the steps of the Masonic Temple took a hostage and fired rounds into the street in a scene that wrapped up about 11:20 a.m. As the scene was filmed in front of the Masonic Temple production officials made sure the intersection of Main Street and Algoma Boulevard was cleared of onlookers. The huge billboards that surround the area where the sundial used to be might serve as the backdrop of the scene. The scene will be part of a recreation of Dillinger and his gangs robbery of the American Bank and Trust Company in Racine. Filming will continue on Washington Avenue throughout the day. Oshkosh Fire Department spokesperson John Holland said things were going smoothly during filming Monday. People are being respectful of the yellow tape and barricades, he said. Holland said two paramedics are on scene just in case they would be needed. Before shooting started, set workers scrambled to get everything and everyone in place while onlookers lined caution tape near the Oshkosh Public Library and near the Washington Building. A 1930s-style vintage car used in a scene Monday morning outside the Masonic Temple wouldnt start for the crews until the fourth or fifth try. Phyllis Meyer and her daughter Lyndsey, 19, were among the few people that watched the scene be put together before filming from the Washington Building Monday. I work in Chicago and had to come up, said Lyndsey Meyer, who is an aspiring actress. Phyllis Meyer admitted she traveled to Oshkosh from Antigo for one reason, and one reason only. Oh, Johnny Depp, she said. -- Crowds gather downtown early to catch a glimpse of filming Crowds began lining the parking lots early this morning in anticipation of catching a glimpse of the action, and the stars. Johnny Depp plays Depression-era criminal John Dillinger in the film, which is directed by Michael Mann and also features Christian Bale. Film crews spent the morning preparing for the first shots to be taken in front of the Masonic Temple in the 300 block of Washington Avenue. A fleet of vintage 1930s vehicles were parked along streets and in parking lots while extras, dressed in 1930s-style coats and hats, milled around on the streets and parking lots while waiting for directors to call action. Around 9:30 a.m., those gawkers armed with binoculars or an extra-powerful camera lens could make out Depp on the steps of the Masonic Temple as he rehearsed a scene with other actors. And Depp was the man the gawkers who lined the parking lots near Washington Avenue came out to see. Lynn Fette and Carolyn Bauer, both of Oshkosh, positioned their lawn chairs in the parking lot behind The Exclusive Company at 6:30 a.m. for their chance to catch a glimpse of Depp. The women, who are both fans of Depp, were armed with blankets and coats and said they were planning on staying downtown to watch filming until they got cold. If we could see Johnny that would be great, said Fette, who had her digital camera in addition to a long-lens camera with her to catch photographic evidence of Depp. But I think this is great for Oshkosh. As onlookers learned this morning, filming a movie is a long process that involves a lot of waiting around before action begins. Chatting with other onlookers, whether it was about Depp or the best place to catch the action, was the way to pass the time. Just talking to people, said Laura Tucker, of Appleton. Everybodys got their little snippet for you. Even though it was early in the day, Nannette Vaughn, of Oshkosh, said she was impressed with what she saw. Ive never seen anything like this. Its really exciting, Vaughn said. Its like Hollywood has come to Oshkosh.

Oshkosh boys play in FVA all-star basketball game Mon, 14 Apr 2008 00:08:00 CST KAUKAUNA You dont get any style points for hustle. Its sweaty, dirty, and theres the possibility of causing yourself bodily harm. But none of those things bothered Neenahs David Goodman on Sunday night as he scored 17 points toward his South teams thrilling 112-109 overtime win over North in the third annual Fox Valley Association All-Star Classic boys basketball game. David Goodman plays harder than any guard that weve seen over the years in the FVA, said South coach Brad Clark, who paces the sidelines for Oshkosh West. If you have him on a team, hes going to make you a winner no matter what. Of course, Clark was also quick to point out the contributions of the sole Oshkosh West player in the game, John Benkoske, who led all scorers with 23 points. (Benkoske) played hard. I knew what John could give us, Clark said. He rebounded the ball well and he scored for us when we needed to in the post. He is a heck of a match-up problem for guys. His presence defensively helped and he made everybody else better on the floor tonight. Representing Oshkosh North on the South team were John Flanigan, scoring 18, and Dave Ittner. (Flanigan) played well for us. He had two free throws at the end of the game to give us a little cushion, Clark said. He made some really good plays towards the end and rebounded well when we needed to get some rebounds. Clark said he thought the FVA All-Star Classic presented a unique opportunity to players. Competing against each other all year, it is good to get on the court with the same jersey and play together, he said.

Immelman wins the Masters, squashing Woods hopes for Grand Slam Sun, 13 Apr 2008 19:57:00 CST AUGUSTA, Ga. Trevor Immelman has never felt better. Four months after he had a tumor removed from his back, Immelman handled the wind and pressure of Augusta National far better than anyone chasing him Sunday to win the Masters, the first South African in a green jacket in 30 years. Immelman held it together around Amen Corner and stretched his lead to as many as six shots on the back nine, taking the life out of a Masters that began with so much hype. A two-putt par on the final hole gave him a 3-over 75, matching the highest final round by a Masters champion. Even so, it was good enough for a three-shot victory over Tiger Woods, whose hopes for a calendar Grand Slam ended with a thud. Woods never got within five shots of the lead when he was on the course, twice missed birdie putts inside 8 feet and had to settle for a 72 and his second consecutive runner-up finish in the Masters. I learned my lesson there with the press, said Woods, who started the talk about a Grand Slam by stating three months ago that winning all four majors in the same year was easily within reason. The only slam possibilities now belong to Immelman, a 28-year-old with a polished swing, who finally realized his potential in the wicked wind of Augusta and a final round that yielded only four rounds under par. Immelman, who finished at 8-under 280, started the week by playing a practice round with his boyhood idol, Gary Player, who won his third Masters in 1978 and set a record by playing for the 51st time. Player told Immelman he was good enough to win the green jacket, and he left him a voicemail Saturday night that Immelman played on his speaker phone for his family to hear. The message: I know youre going to win. Hes been on me all week, telling me to believe in myself, Immelman said. He also told me to keep my head still on putts. Its really a special moment, and Im glad I pulled it through for him. Immelmans wife, Carminita, and their 1-year-old son were waiting for him behind the green. Jacob took hold of the 18th flag, fussing when he couldnt go into the scoring shack to be with his father. Immelmans parents also were there to greet him with hugs behind the 18th green. His father, Johan, is the former commissioner of the Sunshine Tour in South Africa. Its his moment, not mine, said the father, who waved away a reporter. No one doubted he was capable of winning a major, but maybe not this one. Only four months ago, doctors discovered a tumor in his diaphragm that required surgery through his back to remove it. The tumor was benign and the recovery was quick. It hit warp speed this week at Augusta, where Immelman had only broken par once in his five previous Masters. But he built a two-shot lead with three rounds in the 60s, and held it together during a few nervy moments. Immelman made a 10-foot par save from the bunker at No. 9 to keep a two-shot cushion, but he continued to look shaky. His missed the 11th green well to the right, his chip didnt quite reach the green and he was left with a 20-foot putt that was slick and dangerous. Ahead of him, Woods was gaining momentum. Woods holed a 70-foot birdie putt on the 11th, made an acrobatic escape from the trees on the 13th and spun a wedge down the slope on the par-5 13th that left him 5 feet away for birdie. Immelman holed his par putt. Woods missed, just as he has done the last two years on the back nine of a major he once dominated. Brandt Snedeker and Steve Flesch, the last two players with any hope, folded quickly. Woods closed with a 72 and has finished third, second and second in his last three Masters. It also was his fifth runner-up in a major. Immelman earned $1.35 million for his second PGA Tour victory, with Woods also finishing second behind him two years ago in the Western Open.
Kapler has homer, 2 doubles in Brewers 9-7 win over Mets Mon, 14 Apr 2008 00:03:00 CST NEW YORK Gabe Kapler has gone from minor league manager to major league hassle for opposing pitchers. Kapler, who managed in the Red Sox organization last season, homered for the second straight day, doubled twice and drove in three runs to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the New York Mets 9-7 on Sunday. Corey Hart had a career-high four hits and Rickie Weeks homered and scored three runs for the Brewers, who won two of three in the weekend series. The 32-year-old Kapler came out of retirement during the offseason and has four home runs in 26 at-bats. The last time Kapler had at least four homers in a season was 2004, with Boston. He didnt get No. 4 that season until July 21, in his 159th at-bat. Kapler is playing in place of Mike Cameron, suspended for the first 25 games after testing positive for a banned stimulant. Meanwhile, the Mets had ample baserunners despite Jose Reyes sitting out his second straight game because of a strained left hamstring. They pounded out 14 hits and walked eight times. The Mets scored in each of the first three innings, but hit into double plays in each of the next five innings to squander scoring opportunities. Down by two with runners on the corners and none out in the eighth, Luis Castillo bounced to Prince Fielder at first. Fielder stepped on the bag and threw home, nabbing a sliding Brady Clark. Former Mets reliever Guillermo Mota then walked David Wright and Carlos Beltran before Carlos Delgado popped out to right. Brewers closer Eric Gagne pitched a perfect ninth for his third save in five chances and second in two nights. Wright hit his 100th home run, a solo shot in the first to pull the Mets to 2-1. But Wright failed in clutch situations the rest of the game, popping out to shallow right with no out and runners on first and third in the fourth and then grounding out to short on the first pitch he saw to end the sixth, after Brewers reliever Salomon Torres (2-0) had walked two hitters. Brian Schneider went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Mets. Manager Ned Yost, trying to shake up struggling sluggers Ryan Braun and Fielder, flipped them in the lineup, moving Braun back to third, where he hit most of last season. Braun had a two-run single, the third hit in 23 at-bats for last seasons NL Rookie of the Year. Fielder went 0-for-5, and is in a 2-for-24 slump. Oliver Perez hadnt allowed a run in his first two starts but struggled in this one. He allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 1-3 innings, walking three and striking out four. Jorge Sosa (1-1) relieved Perez and gave up Weeks solo homer leading off the sixth to give the Brewers a 7-6 lead. Harts fourth single of the game later scored Kapler to make it 8-6.
