Area dodges major storm damage Sat, 26 Apr 2008 14:01:00 CST A brief, but intense storm cell passed over the Fox Valley Friday evening that downed trees and branches. Heavy rain drenched the area, with tornado warnings in effect for portions of Fond du Lac, Winnebago and Calumet counties between 6 and 7 p.m. There were no reports of tornado damage. The Oshkosh area was hit with one inch of rain over the course of the day, but the major storms Friday evening did no damage in the city, according to Oshkosh Police Department Lt. Kevin Konrad said. Wisconsin Public Service spokesperson Karmen Lemke said six customers in the area lost power, but it was restored within several hours. A clash of cold air in the north and warm, moist air in the southern half of the state set off storms across Wisconsin that included a reported tornado, other funnel clouds, hail and heavy rains in many areas. Locally, one-inch hail was reported in Winchester and a wind gust of 52 miles per hour was recorded in the Greenville area. The National Weather Service said trained weather spotters reported a tornado east of Portage in Columbia County, about 30 miles north of Madison, and other reports had that storm sweeping northeastward to Green Lake and Fond du Lac counties. Large hail hit Columbia, Juneau, Adams, Sauk and Green Lake counties. The Green Lake County Sheriffs Department said no tornadoes touched down, though. A tornado watch was in effect for most of southern Wisconsin until 8 p.m. Forecasters said the storm front moving eastward through the state would be followed by much colder air and blustery winds. Mild air sent temperatures Friday to the low 70s in parts of southern Wisconsin ahead of the front. The forecast showed highs today would range from the mid 30s in the northwest to the low 50s in the southeast, and highs statewide Sunday and Monday would only reach the 40s amid chances of light rain or snow.
Storms include reported tornado near Portage Sat, 26 Apr 2008 14:07:00 CST PORTAGE A clash of weather systems set off storms across Wisconsin late Friday that included a reported tornado, lightning, hail and heavy rains in many areas. The National Weather Service said trained weather spotters reported the tornado east of Portage in Columbia County, about 30 miles north of Madison, as a storm swept northeastward through the area. Lori Getter of Wisconsin Emergency Management said four homes were damaged in the Wyocena area just east of Portage. Tornado sirens sounded in Fond du Lac County as a storm moved through, but no major damage was reported. So far there are no reports of any injuries, she said, but there were lots of trees down, power lines down. Were not sure if its one tornado or a couple tornadoes. A camper also was tossed through the air, she said. She said the weather service would be checking the site Saturday to confirm whether it was a tornado and, if so, determine what strength it was. Scott Reigstad of Alliant Energy said the storms knocked out service to about 4,000 to 5,000 customers in the Portage area at times. The village of Wyocena was almost completely out at one point, he said, but most of the power had been restored by 8:30 p.m. The high winds also caused problems for customers to the northeast, temporarily knocking out service to 4,300 in Waushara County, 2,500 in Sheboygan County and 1,100 in Green Lake County, Reigstad said. Barry McNulty of We Energies said electricity was cut off for about 11,000 of the utilitys customers in southeastern Wisconsin. Much of the damage was from lightning hitting feeder lines that can each serve several thousand customers. By 9:30 p.m., power had been restored to about 5,000 of them as crews continued repair work, he said. Lightning struck the steeple of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in the Portage area but caused only minor damage. It was the second church steeple in Wisconsin to take a lightning strike in two days. A lightning bolt set the steeple of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Milwaukee ablaze during a storm Thursday, leaving only a charred skeleton of the structure. Earlier Friday, lightning hit a transformer serving two Portage schools, knocking out power to Portage Junior High and forcing the evacuation of that school and Woodridge elementary school. No injuries were reported and there was no fire. During the storms later Friday, large hail and wind hit Columbia, Juneau, Adams, Sauk and Green Lake counties, Getter said. Forecasters said the storm front moving eastward through the state would be followed by much colder air and blustery winds. Mild air sent temperatures Friday into the 70s in parts of southern Wisconsin ahead of the front. The forecast showed highs Saturday would range from the mid 30s in the northwest to the low 50s in the southeast, and highs statewide Sunday and Monday would only reach the 40s amid chances of light rain or snow.

font color20229CAround the region: font colorblackD.C. Everest grad lands spot in moviefont colorbla Sat, 26 Apr 2008 11:32:00 CST font colorblack MANITOWISH WATERS -- A shootout erupted as D.C. Everest grad Meghan Mosher sat peacefully in a Manitowish Waters bar on Friday. Glass exploded and bullet holes pierced the wall as Mosher, 23, dove to the floor. She lay motionless face down for three hours until the shooting was over. A stuntman then walked over and helped her to her feet. Mosher, challenge course director at Camp Manito-wish in nearby Boulder Junction, had just made her first, and possibly last, Hollywood film appearance. Forgive her if she feels a bit like a movie star. Legions of fans have gathered near Little Bohemia Lodge and Restaurant where Universal Studios is filming scenes for Public Enemies, the 1930s-era gangster film. The crowds hardly discriminate between stars Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard and the seven extras, including Mosher, as they shuttle to and from the historic lodge where John Dillinger and his gang were ambushed by the FBI in 1934. Fans tell her they love her and want her autograph. Moshers camp colleagues jokingly have started calling her Hollywood. Its fun once in awhile to go along with it, but its just definitely not going to become a career for me, said Mosher, the down-to-earth daughter of Scott and Judith Mosher of Weston. Meghan Mosher graduated in December 2006 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she played on the universitys Ice Hockey Club. She plans a career in environmental or experiential education. Mosher has spent the past week, though, on the studios payroll earning about $110 for a 12-hour day that begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends at dawn. Besides sitting around eating steaks at midnight, Mosher has joked around with British actor Stephen Graham, who plays notorious bank robber Baby Face Nelson. Mosher landed the role of a bar patron on a whim. Her only acting experience stemmed from playing Sherlock Holmes in sixth grade. I have a pretty easy role, I just act scared, Mosher said. That was easy to do when the room was exploding around me.
