Survey team says Columbia County storm included tornado Sun, 27 Apr 2008 09:23:00 CST WYOCENA, Wis. (AP) About 100 volunteers worked Saturday to help clean up the area near the Columbia County village of Wyocena where a tornado touched down Friday, officials said. Patrick Beghin, director of Columbia County Emergency Management, said the tornado destroyed about five farm buildings and left four homes with varying degrees of damage. A National Weather Service survey team headed by meteorologists Rusty Kapela and Jeff Craven of the agencys Sullivan office said its preliminary results indicate the twister had winds of 100 mph and touched down in a path four miles long and 50 to 75 yards wide from southwest of Wyocena to east of Wyocena. The tornado which the weather service said touched downed down for six minutes shortly before 5:30 p.m. was listed as an EF1 tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which ranges from zero at the low end to five at the high end. The survey team was also to inspect other areas in Columbia County, and in Green Lake and Fond du Lac County, to determine whether the tornado may have touched down briefly elsewhere. No people were reported hurt, but the Columbia County Sheriffs Department said two horses sustained minor injuries when a barn collapsed.

Woman gets 3 years prison in babys death Sun, 27 Apr 2008 09:21:00 CST MADISON, Wis. (AP) A woman who confessed to stuffing a sock in her crying infants mouth, leading to the babys eventual death, has been sentenced to three years in prison. Patrice S. Smith, 22, of Madison had pleaded no contest in February to a charge of second-degree reckless homicide in the death of Nataria, the six-month-old daughter of her and Jesse Neal. The judge said Friday he thought carefully about the sentence, weighing two conflicting profiles of Smiths personality. Friends and relatives had portrayed Smith as a kind woman who withered under the stress of a new baby and a bad relationship. Meanwhile prosecutors described her as a woman who didnt really want a baby and didnt care that the child had died. Perhaps the truth is somewhere in the middle, said Dane County Circuit Judge Daniel Moeser, who also sentenced Smith to 10 years of extended supervision. Smith had confessed to putting the sock in Natarias mouth to quiet her, saying she feared the babys crying would upset neighbors and wake Neal. Tracy Miller, the babys paternal grandmother, said Smith had plenty of other options. Smith could have called her or her family to help with the childs care, she said.

Choking game dangers stressed Sun, 27 Apr 2008 08:26:00 CST CHILTON The mother of a 13-year-old boy who died playing the choking game will join police and school officials at a program aimed at educating parents about the deadly game. The free presentation will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Chilton High Schools Engler Center. It is sponsored by the Chilton Optimist Club and Chilton High School. Because of the subject matter, it is suggested that adults only attend the presentation. Calumet County Sheriff Jerry Pagel said several hundred deaths across the United States have been attributed to the activity, in which participants cut off the flow of oxygen to the brain, in exchange for a few seconds of feeling lightheaded. Some strangle themselves with a belt, a rope or their bare hands others push on their chest or hyperventilate. Our children are playing this game and we need to know what to look for before one of our children become a statistic, he said. We need to educate ourselves about what our children are doing and what signs we need to look for. Susan McCarthy, of Darboy, the mother of Kyle McCarthy, 13, who died while playing this game Oct. 10, 2005, will be the featured speaker. She will talk about how his death has changed her family. Tammy Marquardt of Appleton also will tell of the death of her son, A.J. Marquardt, from the game on Sept. 11. Also speaking on the subject will be Kevin Thompson, Madison Middle School police-school liaison officer, and Bridget Fitzpatrick and Denise Steiner, also from Madison Middle School. They will discuss warning signs and how to handle discussions with your child. Investigators Wendy Schmitz and Mark Wiegert of the Calumet County Sheriffs Department will discuss the investigation into Kyle McCarthys death and answer questions.

Oshkosh furniture store to close Sun, 27 Apr 2008 08:29:00 CST OSHKOSH -- Mike and Cheryl Wallace have experienced a lifetimes worth of hardships at Wallace Home Furnishings over the last four years. Heavy spring storms flooded their showroom in 2004, arsonists set fire to their warehouse in 2005 following a store relocation and then a water pipe burst in their store this February, flooding the showroom again and literally giving Cheryl Wallace a heart attack. Couple all of that with a furniture industry that really has not recovered from the decline after Sept. 11, 2001, and it becomes clear why the couple have decided to liquidate their stock and close after 31 years in business. So many things have happened, Cheryl Wallace said. Weve been thinking about it for months. The whole combination of everything was the last straw. Beginning Thursday, Wallace Home Furnishings, 1550 S. Koeller St., will hold an invitation-only sale for four days before opening up to the general public on Monday, May 5. The Wallaces said they struggled with the decision, but Mike Wallace said ultimately he did not expect a recovery in the home furnishings industry for a long time. We talked to people from the furniture industry for a long time and they said it never really came back like the economy did after Sept. 11, (2001), Mike Wallace said. And I dont want to put any more stress on Cheryl. I just think it is best to do this. While the home furnishings store will close, the Wallaces said their bedding store, Americas Mattress, 370 S. Koeller St., will remain open for business.
