| Action: Among chosen few, Teresa may be asked: Deal or No Deal Mon, 28 Apr 2008 16:46:00 CST When you cant afford to go to on an extended vacation, what do you do You go to Green Bay, instead, get a-little crazy, take two days off from work and you try to become a contestant on Deal or No Deal. I have been a big fan of the show since it started. Like many others, I would sit on the couch night after night and tell my husband, I want to be the one on Deal or no Deal. Who doesnt There are no puzzles to solve, no time clocks to beat, no tricky questions to answer. You just pick numbers and have a 1 in 26 chance of winning $1 million dollars Its odd how the hand of opportunity comes knocking when you least expect it. I had already made up my mind that I was going to get on this show. That is until I went online at our Ashford home and downloaded the 15-page application and looked at everything you had to do in order to even be considered. If there was an open casting call, the process seemed much easier, but at the time there was no sign of the show coming to Wisconsin. Knock-knock-knock --hello - who is it The hand of opportunity Four weeks ago after a full day of work, cooking dinner for my family and going through the normal bath and bed-time routine, I was sitting with my baby girl watching Deal or No Deal when they flashed a message across the screen that, indeed, they were coming to Wisconsin The show was going to hold open auditions in Green Bay on April 2. I looked at my baby daughter, Morgan, and said Honey, mommy has to make a phone call. I was on the phone instantly to my husband, Scott, planning a trip to Bay Park Square Mall in Green Bay I had done some research and learned thousands of people turn out for the auditions and a chance to be on the show. I said, If you dont even try, you dont have a chance. I thought of my little girl and how this opportunity could change all of our lives and I knew I had to be brave. I needed to look on the bright side and turn the entire ordeal into an adventure that I would remember forever. Actually it would be an adventure for my best friend Nicci McCarthy and I, because there was no way I was going by myself The alarm clock woke me up at 4 a.m. on April 2. I went through the usual woman routine and had to change outfits three or four times before I was satisfied. I was going to have to wait in line for 10 hours, so my choice was jeans, a sweater and my lucky hat. I kissed my sleeping baby, woke up my husband and said Okay, Im heading out to get us on the show...and I will get on this show Nicci and I arrived in Ashwaubenon at 5:15 that morning and joined the parade of cars that were circling the mall parking lot. We were told that they were not letting anyone park until 6 a.m. When they gave the go ahead to find a parking spot, it was chaos. Cars were coming in this direction and that direction, each one of us trying to get as close to the front door as possible. We dashed for a spot and landed near the mall entrance. Like hundreds of others, we grabbed our gear and ran to get in line - only to be chased off by security who informed us we had to wait in our vehicles until 8 a.m. The auditions were not starting until 1 p.m. that afternoon, but by 7 a.m. that morning, the parking lot was full. The air was charged with electricity. You could honestly feel the hopes and dreams of thousands of people swirling around you. All for the one shot of maybe making it on Deal or No Deal. The two guards seemed to be having trouble keeping everyone in their vehicles. Soon there was a surge from the back and Nicci was yelling, Run, Teresa, run After a scary mad dash (we were afraid of being trampled) we were only 50 ft. from the entrance, but Nikki and I had become separated. We were packed so tightly that I could not get to my phone and, at five feet, too short to see very far. Finally, the crowd loosened and I was able to call Niccis cell and tell her to look for a woman with the big white hat and standing next to me, and she made her way over to me. Finally, with frozen feet, we were ushered into the mall at 8 a.m. The setting looked more like an amusement park than a mall as we had to walk in sets of two through what felt like miles of roped off walk-ways. With 350 people in front of us, we had to wait five hours for our 10-second interview - our chance to shine. Nicci and I were fortunate though, for soon we were sharing stories and laughs with what we called our new family: Amy, age 70, who looked like she was 40 and had come to America with her husband from the Phillipines Lynn, mid-20s and raising a son as a single parent and Todd who was just a lucky guy and wanted to see just how lucky he was. We learned that 10 of us would face 10 judges and each would be given 20-30 seconds to sell ourselves. What can one person say in 20 seconds How can they possibly choose we asked. Each person had their own unique story and deserves the chance of a lifetime. Finally, it was our turn and it was now or never for our little family. The noise was deafening as 100 people at a time (ten tables) were taken to the judges. If a judge liked you, you were held at the table while the others around you were let go. Then another judge was brought to the table where you again were given your 20 seconds of time to tell your story. Just be yourself, they had told us, so me being myself, I said a really quick prayer as we raced to our judges table. I was the forth to speak to our judge, a young college-aged woman with a big smile, who held a stop-watch in her hand and nodded courteously as people yelled their 20 second life story into her face. I have three goodies for you. tick...tick...tick... First, my name is catchy, I am Teresa Flasch and I am actually a professional photographer with the last name Flasch. tick...tick...tick... Second, I believe in miracles since we were blessed with our own miracle, our daughter, who we adopted from birth two years ago. tick...tick...tick... And third, if you want the Wisconsin angle I got it covered. My grandparents, who are in their late 70s, are still dairy farmers without a pipeline and if I could just make it so that my grandma doesnt have to carry milk anymore, that would be great This seems like a lot to say in 30 seconds, but I made it. Okay, thank you everyone, she said You, you and you stay For many, many people, that was it. Hours of standing in line for a simple thank-you, be on your way, but not for me. Todd, the lady in the white cowboy hat and myself were asked to stay. My heart was beating so fast, to even make it to the second questioning was a miracle, but I didnt have time to think about that because another judge was on her way to our table and out came the stop watch. The three of us all went again and another thank-you was given and then I heard the words Okay, Flasch, youre moving on. I was so excited I said something cheesy and the lady informed me not to get too excited because there were more rounds to come. She smiled as she said this, and handed me my golden ticket to the next line. There, I met a woman who had cut Brett Favres hair since he was 22 and two grandmas who were there to give their grandchildren a better start in life than they had. I looked to the sidelines for some reassurance, because I knew this was my chance and there was my supporter and comrade in this wild adventure, Nicci, smiling back at me. Next, each of us were ushered into a blue, secluded tent and I had to come up with a new strategy since I noticed the same judge as before. Within a blink, our 30 seconds with this judge was up and thank-yous were given. As I went to walk out, feeling deflated, I heard some magic words: Flasch, were not done with you yet. Another younger woman and myself were again held back. This time the stop watch was put away and we were able to speak freely with our judge, Christina. She asked more personal questions and we were both told, Okay well let you know. What did that mean My mind was still going a hundred miles a minute and I was thinking, who, what, where, when, how. Of course, these questions werent answered, but my heart was still filled with joy that I had even made it that far. As we walked through the mall on our way out, I couldnt help but shout out words of encouragement to all those people that still had hours and hours to wait in line. The day had been a wonderful and yet crazy adventure. While we were driving home, Nicci and I were already wondering what we could come up with to do the the next day since this one had truly enlightened our existence. We didnt have to wait long though, because as I was pulling into the drive-way, my cell phone rang and, once again, the hand of opportunity had come knocking The cell phone screen read: California and I said out loud Get Out Hello, Teresa this is Christina calling from Deal or No Deal... I nearly wet in my pants. They had liked me and wanted me to return the next day for a full taped dress rehearsal audition. I was still jumping up and down in the driveway when my husband pulled in. Scott was speechless. There were so many questions, but we knew that they would just have to wait for tomorrow. We had to get busy informing the three other supporters I would need to bring along for the audition: Our good friend Chase Marciniak my sister-in-law, Sue Flasch Nicci and Scott. Dressing as we would if we were to actually be on the show, the four of us headed back to Green Bay. With butterflies in my stomach, we arrived for our appointment where we were given much more information. Richard, one of the casting directors for the show, greeted us, along with six other hopefuls and their supporters. We were told that over 5,000 people had auditioned the day before and less then 30 were chosen to return the next day. We were also informed that roughly 500,000 people audition each year for the show and that only 200 make it to the level we had reached. Wow We would each be doing a one-on-one taped interview with a member of the crew and then we would be playing a trial run of the game. We were to be ourselves and to play the game as if it were absolutely the real deal. After this the tapes would then be edited and sent to California where Richard and his staff would meet with the producers to determine just who would make it on Deal or No Deal. I felt my interview went very well and quickly it was time for my supporters to come in and play the rehearsal version of Deal or No Deal. The funny thing is that you actually forget that you are nervous or that it is just an audition. If youve ever watched the show and have seen the contestants jumping and crying and just going crazy, trust me, its not fake, those are real emotions coming from these people. I think I cried twice, but the decision to take $45,000 or turn it down and keep playing is not an easy one to make. But I did By the end and after some gut-wrenching decisions, had this been the real Deal or No Deal, I would have walked away with a check for $424,000 It wasnt real, of course, so I simply had to walk away with a positive attitude that I had done my best. The memories are real though, and me experience is living proof that, no matter how this turns out, we each have to keep hope tucked away inside of us if we are to keep smiling through this crazy world of ours, because we never know when the hand of opportunity is going to come knocking on our door. This story, I hope, is to be continued... since now I need to wait not 30 seconds, but 30 days to a year before being notified if we will be asked to the real Deal or No Deal. I hope everyone crosses their fingers for me, so that I can come back and give you the happy ever after ending of this adventure. |
