Waupun woman dead of apparent drug overdose Wed, 30 Apr 2008 09:58:00 CST RANDOLPH A 34-year-old Waupun woman was found dead Tuesday from a possible drug overdose in a car in a grocery store parking lot. Police were called to Piggly Wiggly, 164 Keinow Drive, Randolph, at about 10:30 a.m. after the driver of the vehicle noticed the passengers in the backseat became unresponsive and called 911. When emergency personnel arrived, the female passenger, Kara Carlson, was not breathing. A male passenger, Brian Forshee, 39, of Beaver Dam, was transported to Beaver Dam Community Hospital for treatment. He was later taken into custody on an unrelated probation violation, according to a press release issued by the Randolph Police Department. Right now, we are not looking at charging either the driver of the vehicle or the Beaver Dam man, as hes more valuable to us as a witness, said Randolph Police Chief Michael Klavekoske. Investigators learned that Carlson and Forshee had traveled from Beaver Dam to Madison during the early morning hours of April 29 with a friend. They went to a motel on the south side of Madison where witnesses questioned believe both subjects were using methadone and possibly other controlled substances, Klavekoske said. Both Carlson and Forshee became unresponsive on the trip back from Madison. Klavekoske noted that the Dane County Drug Task Force has been notified of the death investigation. He said information will be forwarded to the Dane County District Attorneys Office. We believe that Carlson and Forshee may have received the drugs while in the city of Madison. And after talking it over with the district attorney, we feel that any charges in connection with the case would be coming through the Dane County District Attorneys Office, Klavekoske said. Our main focus in this case would be charging those responsible for providing the drugs via the Len Bias Law.

OWI case resumes against Brownsville man Wed, 30 Apr 2008 16:23:00 CST JUNEAU A case against a 22-year-old Brownsville man charged in a drunken driving crash that injured four people last fall in the town of Lomira will proceed. Interim Judge Richard Rehm declared Matthew Britton competent to stand trial during a hearing Wednesday in Dodge County Circuit Court. In February, Judge Daniel Klossner ordered Britton to be committed for treatment and suspended legal proceedings against him. Britton is charged with injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle. If convicted, Britton faces a maximum of 12 years in prison and $25,000 in fines. According to the criminal complaint, Britton was traveling south on Center Drive in the town of Lomira at 10:34 p.m. on Aug. 31 when he failed to stop at the stop sign. As Brittons car entered the intersection it was hit broadside by an eastbound vehicle on County Trunk H driven by Michael Casper, 48, of Lomira. Britton told investigators he didnt see the stop sign and never applied his brakes before entering the intersection. He estimated that the car was traveling at least 60 mph when the crash occurred, according to the complaint. Three of Brittons four passengers were sitting in the back seat of the vehicle. Britton told investigators that no one in the back seat was wearing seat belts due to the fact that the back seat was not fastened to the floor. Two of the back seat passengers, Cory Macht, 16, of Campbellsport, and Jeremy Geminden-Hefter, 17, of Lomira, were injured in the crash. Gemindin-Hefter was ejected during the crash and pinned under the vehicle. The Lomira teen was flown to Childrens Hospital in Milwaukee where he was treated for multiple injuries. Macht and another passenger, Theresa Drake, 17, of Mayville, were transported to St. Agnes Hospital. Drake was treated and released while Macht was transported to another hospital and later released. At the crash scene, officers found numerous empty and full beer cans inside of Brittons car and next to the vehicle, according to the report. Britton told officers he consumed two beers that evening and smoked marijuana earlier in the day, but did not think it would affect his driving, according to the complaint. A preliminary breath test recorded a .10 percent blood alcohol level. Over the past six years, Britton has been convicted numerous times of speeding, operating after suspension, drug-related charges and seat belt violations across Dodge, Fond du Lac, Washington and Wood counties, according to court records. A revocation hearing will also be set for a Washington County case where Britton was found guilty of carrying a concealed weapon and driving a vehicle without an owners consent and later abandoning it in November 2005.

TCI officer accused of assaulting 5 inmates Wed, 30 Apr 2008 14:03:00 CST A 36-year-old correctional officer groomed several inmates at a womens prison in an effort to receive sexual favors, says Fond du Lac County District Attorney Michael ORourke. Jimmie L. Brown, of Oshkosh, was charged Wednesday with 13 counts of second-degree sexual assault by correctional staff in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court. Judge Dale English ordered a $50,000 cash bail for Brown, who remained in custody at the jail. Brown could potentially face life in prison if convicted as charged. More charges could be filed, ORourke said, as police continue to interview potential victims. Brown is accused of sexually assaulting five different inmates over the past year while employed by Taycheedah Correctional Institution, according to the criminal complaint. One of the women alleges Brown raped her the others say the sexual acts were consensual. Brown allegedly used manipulative means to initiate and keep the sexual contact going, ORourke said. He threatened to place some of the women in segregation if they did not fulfill his wishes or to prevent them from reporting the acts. He told one woman he was the one in charge and no one would believe her if she reported the incident, according to the criminal complaint. He watched another change clothes and then gave her assignments that were sexual in nature, the complaint said. In all the instances, he allegedly started off by befriending the women, getting to know them and then allegedly initiating sexual contact with them, the complaint said. The contact occurred in various areas at TCI, including in a blanket room and behind Dumpsters outside the prison, according to the complaint. This man groomed these women, ORourke said following Browns initial court appearance. Brown was employed with TCI for about a year and he is currently suspended from employment at the prison, ORourke said. This is the fourth incident of a TCI employee allegedly sexually assaulting an inmate or inmates in the past five years, he said.
Senate panel to examine Brazilian acquisition of Green Bay meat processor Wed, 30 Apr 2008 14:00:00 CST WASHINGTON - A Senate subcommittee will scrutinize a Brazilian companys bid to buy Smithfield Beef Group of Green Bay, Sen. Herb Kohl said today. Kohl, chairman of the Judiciary subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights, provided few details in his announcement of the May 7 hearing on the proposed acquisition. The U.S. Justice Department is reviewing JBS Swift Co.s proposal to buy the countrys fourth largest beef packer, National Beef Packing, LLC, and the fifth largest beef packer, Smithfield Beef Group. The company also plans to buy the largest U.S. cattle feedlot operation, Five Rivers Ranch Cattle Feeding, LLC. If the Justice Department approves the sales, JBS Swift Co. would become the largest beef processor in the United States. JBS Swift Co.s efforts to expand in the United States have stirred fears in the cattle industry of a consolidation that could mean fewer buyers and lower prices for ranchers because of less slaughterhouse competition. JBS Swift Co. is the U.S. subsidiary of JBS S.A., Latin Americas largest beef processor. The company is the result of JBS S.A. buying Swift Co., the third largest fresh beef and port processor in the United States and the largest beef processor in Australia. The merger was completed in July 2007.
