| Waupun man dies in scooter accident Tue, 06 May 2008 20:41:00 CST WAUPUN A 74-year-old Waupun man riding a motorized scooter died after colliding with a truck Tuesday afternoon in Waupun. Rescue personnel were called to the scene at about 3:39 p.m. to the report of a scooter colliding with a truck south of the intersection of Fond du Lac and Spring streets. The driver of the red Honda reflex scooter was traveling east on Spring Street and made a right turn onto Fond du Lac Street in front of a northbound truck driven by a 50-year-old Hales Corner man. It appears that the elderly man crossed the center line and was hit by the oncoming truck, said Waupun Police Chief Dale Heeringa. The accident, he said, remains under investigation. Heeringa said the Waupun man, who suffered multiple injuries, including a compound fracture of the lower left leg, was transported by Brooks Ambulance to Waupun Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Right now, it appears that the mans death was a result of the accident, but we are still awaiting autopsy results to make a final determination, Heeringa said. A vehicle inspector from the Wisconsin State Patrol was called to perform a mechanical inspection of the truck. Heeringa said the name of the deceased will be released Wednesday afternoon following notification of family members. |

| Man accused of slashing officer with beer glass will stand trial Tue, 06 May 2008 16:56:00 CST HUSTISFORD A Hartford man accused of slashing a Dodge County Sheriffs Department deputy in the face with a broken beer glass and battering his sister will stand trial. Dodge County Circuit Court Judge Andrew Bissonnette ruled that Westly Thompson, 27, was competent to stand trial during a competency hearing Tuesday morning. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for May 15. Thompson is charged with two counts of battery to a peace officer and felony bail-jumping in what Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls said was the worst battery incident to an officer that he had witnessed in his 20-year career in law enforcement. The Dodge County man is also charged with battering his 19-year-old sister at his parents Iron Ridge Home on March 9. Following the assault of Thompsons sister, Brittany Thompson, the Hartford man fled on foot from the residence while his victim was transported to a Hartford hospital for treatment of her injuries. At that time, Thompson was out on bail for a substantial battery incident that occurred on Jan. 28 in Washington County in which he allegedly assaulted his wife, Lacey Thompson. During that incident, Thompson began arguing with the woman and began punching her in the face, fracturing three teeth. Thompson then fled from the home, according to the criminal complaint. With Thompsons history of violence, Monaghan and two other deputies were sent to Rock River Bar and Grill to take the 27-year-old into custody. When asked for identification, Thompson threw his drivers license at Monaghan then struck him on the left side of the face with a beer glass, according to the report. The impact shattered the glass and caused severe lacerations to Monaghans face and broke two teeth. Thompson also is accused of biting Deputy Bradley Vinje on the hand, breaking the skin, according to the complaint. Hearing a commotion inside, the third deputy, Jason Westphal, ran inside the establishment and used his Taser to subdue Thompson, according to the report. Thompson is being held in the Dodge County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 cash bail. |

| Man charged in gun theft Tue, 06 May 2008 16:49:00 CST JUNEAU A 31-year-old Milwaukee man accused of stealing firearms from a Dodge County home has been charged. Shannon L. Smith made his initial appearance Monday in Dodge County Circuit Court where he is charged with burglary/arming self with a dangerous weapon and two counts of theft. If convicted, Smith faces up to 27 years in prison and $70,000 in fines. He is being held in the Waukesha County Jail on burglary charges stemming from an April 4 incident in Waukesha County. Dodge County Sheriffs Department deputies were called to a Juneau residence on March 23. Stephen Rovics told police that someone had entered his unlocked home over the weekend and removed three firearms from underneath his sons bed. The missing guns include a Yugoslavian SKS firearm with an affixed bayonet valued at $110 and a Golania 223 semi-automatic rifle valued at $1,003. Also missing were assorted military knives and loose change, according to the criminal complaint. During the investigation, an official from Waukesha County contacted detectives to report that a roommate of Smiths had heard the Waukesha man bragging about stealing guns from a Juneau home. During questioning, Smith admitted to knowing the Rovics family and initially denied stealing any weapons from the home, according to the complaint. Later, Smith told officers he had lost his job, was using drugs and was looking to steal something to sell to buy some crack, according to the complaint. A preliminary hearing date has been set for May 22. |
| Senate panel hears about Badger State food favorites Tue, 06 May 2008 15:37:00 CST WASHINGTON - Reducing the incidence of Type 2 diabetes should be a top priority in any reform of the U.S. health care system, former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson told a Senate committee Tuesday. Eighteen million people have it today, 21 million will have it tomorrow and 41 million Americans are pre-diabetic, said Thompson, who served as President George Bushs first secretary of the Health and Human Services Department. Thompson said a healthy diet and weight control are two keys to fighting Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes. People who are overweight or obese are at higher risk to develop it. Even Wisconsinites can modify their eating habits and reduce their risk for obesity and diabetes, he said. I come from the state of Wisconsin where every meal is better with beer, brats, cheese and gravy. But instead of eating two brats, you eat one brat and you lose weight. Instead of two Millers, you have one, Thompson said. He and Donna Shalala, a former University of Wisconsin-Madison chancellor and President Bill Clintons HHS secretary appeared before the Finance Committee to offer health care advice. |

| Ripon man accused of possessing illegal shotgun Tue, 06 May 2008 14:58:00 CST A 52-year-old Ripon man whos home became the scene of a shooting in February made an initial appearance Tuesday in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court. Michael Leber, 53 WaWa Ave., is charged with possessing a short-barreled shotgun. If convicted as charged, he could face up to six years in prison. Leber was released on a $10,000 signature bond following the court appearance. The gun was found by the Ripon Police Department after officers searched the home following a fatal shooting that occurred during the early morning hours of Feb. 20. Jason Perry, 18, was killed at the home after his best friend, Evan Tolsma, 19, of Brandon, accidentally shot him in the head with an AK47 assault rifle, according to the criminal complaint. Tolsma has said he did not know that the gun, which belonged to Leber, was loaded. Tolsma is charged with homicide by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon. His next court appearance is May 12. The teens were hanging out at the house with Lebers son and had been examining several guns in the home, according to the complaint. During a search of the home, the Ripon police turned up several guns, including a Herrington and Richardson Arms Co. .410-gauge shotgun with a sawed-off barrel that was shorter than regulatory size, according to the complaint filed in Circuit Court. Michael Leber collected guns and said he used the sawed-off barrel because it was fun to shoot, according to the complaint. Leber was out of town at the time of the shooting, and his son, Aron Leber, 20, had access to the guns. The defendant is next expected in court on June 5. |

| Action: Pawsatively for the pets Mon, 05 May 2008 16:29:00 CST One for the money. Two for the show. Three its for the animals, so get ready to go to the seventh annual Pawsatively A Ball. On Saturday, May 10, from 6-11 p.m. at the UW- Fond du Lac Commons, music, entertainment and auctions featuring a variety of fun-filled packages will provide the opportunity to enjoy an evening of frivolities while raising money for the Fond du Lac Humane Society. This years event includes wine tasting by Cujaks Wine Market, music by Jazz n More featuring Joe Scheibinger and Janice Marie, a live and silent auction and raffle. There will be the Pets n Pearls Fashion Show featuring several of the animals from the shelter decked out in the latest pet fashions. This is a fun-filled way to get involved and make a difference, said Lucy Mathers, shelter manager. Not everyone has time to volunteer at the shelter. This event is a way to raise money and have a good time. With a goal of exceeding last years $21,000, organizers of this years event have included a variety of vacation and leisure auction items, including a guided kayak tour in Door County, a historical boat cruise of Elkhart Lake, a private shopping evening at TLC Boutique, and many more. Each year we try to be more creative and to provide unique items, explained Carrie Stollenwerk, co-chair of the event and a member of the Humane Society Board of Directors. Chris Kaminski is the other co-chair. The wine tasting and golf are very popular, said Carrie. There are a number of new things this year, as well as another unique jewelry creation by Ron Emanual. Its really about making a difference and supporting the FDL Humane Society, she added. Homeless animals need a place to go. The shelter provides a safe, clean and caring facility where their daily needs are met until a home can be found. Proceeds from the event will be used for general operations for the shelter, including facility maintenance, veterinary expenses and general pet care needs. As a nonprofit organization which does not receive state or federal funding, the shelter relies on donations and fund-raising events to maintain operations. I wanted to help because I cant adopt all the cats myself and this event raises money so they are cared for, said Chris. The shelter takes care of them until they are adopted. Lucy Mathers, who has been the shelter manager for the past seven years, emphasized the importance of reaching out to the community, which has been very supportive of the shelter, with the goal of creating awareness and education, plus fulfilling the needs of the community. We really need to look at the big picture when it comes to animal care, she explained. What were really trying to do is develop a humane community where people realize the important part animals play in our lives. The more people who are aware of what the shelter is about and the importance of its existence, the better we will be able to deal with the issues of homeless pets and pet overpopulation, animal cruelty and neglect. As the shelters largest fund-raising event, the annual Pawsatively A Ball provides the chance for people in the community to get involved. According to Lucy, the rate of homes found for the animals is approximately 80 percent, due to the shelters centralized location, working with other shelters and the use of the Internet, where people and pets can be matched from a variety of locations. Thats what its all about, noted Carrie. Finding matches for people and pets. The unconditional love of a pet is something worth treasuring and enjoying. Its seeing people make that connection with a pet, added Lucy. Or more importantly, seeing the pet make the connection and finding a home. Its very rewarding to see that happen. That, says Lucy, is what the Fond du Lac Humane Society is all about: Its purpose and mission is to provide care and shelter for homeless animals, but also to educate the community. We have had great support from the people in the community. Being proactive and aware of the needs in the community help us to better meet its needs. By supporting the shelter, people are supporting the community as a whole and making a difference in the lives of pets and people. Event admission is $45 per person for FDL Humane Society members $50 for non-members. Advance reservations are required by Tuesday, May 6, as seating is limited. For more information, including reservations, donations or sponsorship, contact Lucy at 922-8873. This is an event for everyone, concluded Carrie. Come dressed casually or black tie. It really doesnt matter. The purpose is to help support the shelter to help the animals who have nowhere else to go. Come and enjoy the fun, the food and the entertainment. Its well worth your time. Added Chris, Ive been to the event in the past and have always had fun - so when I was asked to help (as co-chair), I just couldnt refuse. Corporate sponsors include Sunny 97 and 96.1 The Mix, J.F. | Action: Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides Walk set for May 10 in FDL Mon, 05 May 2008 16:39:00 CST There will be a Great Strides walk for cystic fibrosis on Saturday, May 10. Registration is between 10 and 11 a.m., at the Fond du Lac Yacht Club, and the walk begins at 11 a.m. and is a 5 km walk through Lakeside Park. There will be bagels and muffins before the walk for registered walkers and a light lunch after the walk. Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening, genetic disease that affects 30,000 Americans. CF affects the lungs and the pancreas. CF patients must spend hours each day in therapy and treatments, take many medications, and often, face hospitalizations on a yearly basis. There is no cure for CF. The average life expectancy of a child born today with CF is less than 38 years. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation seeks to find a cure for this disease. Along the way, they are identifying better treatments, developing more effective medicines and increasing the accessibility of life-lengthening therapies. Through research, it is a reality that CF may soon be a manageable illness and not the fatal disease that it is today. Sponsor a walker or come walk yourself and help raise more research funds and bring us closer to CF, standing for CURE FOUND. For further information, call 921-6790. |

For more information about summer camps, pool passes and Back to School programs, individuals are encouraged to call The Salvation Army. It is the mission of The Salvation Army to meet human needs in Gods name without discrimination. To find out how you can help accomplish that mission through donations of time, service and money, individuals are encouraged to call The Salvation Army at 923-8220. |
