Police link 4 teens to rash of criminal acts Fri, 09 May 2008 15:10:00 CST Fond du Lac police have linked four teenagers to a rash of burglaries, arsons and vandalisms that occurred over the past two years in the city. Police have referred more than 60 charges and cleared numerous previously unsolved crimes, said Lt. Steve Klein of the Fond du Lac Police Department. The teens ages 15, 16, 17 and 18 told investigators they committed the crimes for the thrill of it, Klein said. Charges of theft, disorderly conduct, arson, recklessly endangering safety, burglary, attempted burglary and criminal damage to property have been referred to juvenile intake and the Fond du Lac County District Attorneys office against the teens, he said. All of the teens were not involved in every incident but were friends and were allegedly linked in some way to the crimes. The criminal acts resulted in $27,000 in damage. Items worth more than $1,000 were allegedly stolen, Klein said. The four teens have been linked to incidents starting in 2006 and continuing through this year, he said. The crimes include a rash of fires started in the downtown area in 2007 when the teens allegedly lit Sterno cans on fire and threw them into Dumpsters, Klein said. They allegedly stole the Sterno cans from a vehicle parked at a downtown business. They were linked to a burglary and arson to a house on Military Road in May 2007. That home was in the process of being moved and was not occupied at the time of the crime, Klein said. The crimes include a rash of paintball shootings in which individuals were targeted. One of the victims an 11-year-old girlwas injured when a paintball hit her in the eye, Klein said. They were also linked to two attempted burglaries at Book World, 85 S. Main St., and a theft of money from Windhover Center for the Arts, 51 Sheboygan St., Klein said. This was outstanding investigative work by Detectives Steve Kaufman and Jeff Hardbridge on this very complex and time consuming investigation, said Police Chief Tony Barthuly.
Boy hit by car was on foot, not bike Fri, 09 May 2008 13:19:00 CST A 10-year-old Fond du Lac boy darted into the street on foot Wednesday evening not on a bike and was struck by a car. The Police Department released incorrect information Thursday that Eugene Matz, 10, was on a bike, Lt. Steve Klein of the Fond du Lac Police Department said Friday. Updated information was sent by police Friday to media outlets, saying the child had actually been on foot when the accident occurred at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The driver of the car, Tana Laudolff, 48, of Fond du Lac, was driving north on South Peters Avenue and Western Avenue when Eugene darted out in front of her, according to a Police Department press release. The boy failed to yield the right of way to the car, police said. Eugene is recovering at Childrens Hospital in Milwaukee from several breaks to both legs, said his mother, Evelyn Matz. His bones were even sticking through his skin, Matz said. She said he was expected to be released from the hospital on Saturday. Evelyn Matz said shes had several talks with her son about the importance of looking both ways before crossing streets. Ive been after him for a long time about that, she said, adding that her son has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and difficulties paying attention to orders.
Waupun woman to stand trial in embezzlement case Fri, 09 May 2008 10:58:00 CST A Waupun woman accused of stealing more than $30,000 from her former employer more than six years ago will stand trial. Sharolyn Groy, 34, on Friday waived her right to a preliminary hearing in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court and entered a not guilty plea to one felony count of theft from a business setting. Groy is accused of stealing more than $30,000 from Marshview Cwik Mart between July 7, 2000, and Aug. 2, 2002. Investigator Jim Zimmerman of the Waupun Police Department said officials at the Waupun service station became suspicious after Groy began turning in a large number of voided transactions. She admitted to voiding several small transactions and when they totaled more than $20 or so, she would allegedly collect that amount from a paying customer and put it in her pocket, according to police reports. When confronted by investigators, Groy said she began taking money to offset financial pressures at home. When she tried to stop, she found herself unable to do so and said she was addicted to taking the money, said Zimmerman. Waupun police filed a 400-plus page report with then Fond du Lac County District Attorney Thomas Storm in 2002. Charges in the case were filed in December 2007 by newly appointed Fond du Lac County District Attorney Michael ORourke.
Cattle rustler placed on probation Fri, 09 May 2008 16:01:00 CST A local cattle rustler will not spend time behind bars for stealing three heifers in April from area farms. During a hearing Friday in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court. David VandeSlunt, 24, of Oakfield, was placed on probation for two years and ordered to complete 50 hours of community service. As part of a plea deal, VandeSlunt pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor theft charges amended from felony theft charges. Three counts of attempted theft and two trespassing charges were dismissed and read into the court record. The charges were filed in April after the Fond du Lac County Sheriffs Department linked VandeSlunt to the theft of heifer calves from two area farms, Detective Chip Capoyianes told The Reporter. The incidents occurred during the early morning hours of April 8. VandeSlunt stole the cows in hopes of making a profit by selling them at a local auction, Capoyianes said. He stole one heifer calf from an Eden farm and three from an Oakfield farm, loading them into the back of his pickup truck, Capoyianes said. He tried to steal more but was unable to lift the heifers, he said. He then took the animals to Equity Livestock Yards in Lomira, Capoyianes said. Heifer calves can sell for $500 each, he said.
