| Police: Man, 19, could face sex assault charge Fri, 16 May 2008 14:58:00 CST WAUPUN Charges have been forwarded to the Fond du Lac County District Attorneys Office against a 19-year-old Fond du Lac man who allegedly sexually assaulted an Eden woman while she was intoxicated. The Waupun Police Department was contacted at about 2 a.m. May 14 by the Fond du Lac County Sheriffs Department that a 19-year-old Eden woman had told officials at St. Agnes Hospital that she was sexually assaulted at a party at a Waupun residence earlier that evening, according to police reports. The woman told police she was with a girlfriend who was visiting her 22-year-old boyfriend at his West Franklin Street apartment in Waupun. The Eden woman said the 19-year-old Fond du Lac man was among four people who began drinking, according to the police report. That same day, the Eden womans 59-year-old father drove to a Waupun restaurant at about 10 a.m. and threatened to kill the 22-year-old host of the party. The Waupun man was taken into custody on a probation hold, and the womans father was transported to a mental health facility, according to police reports. Waupun Deputy Chief Mindy Hendricks said charges of second-degree sexual assault are pending against the 19-year-old Fond du Lac man. We may be looking to press disorderly conduct or threats to injure charges against the 59-year-old man. However, the case is still under investigation at this time, Hendricks said. |

| Trepanier poised to make mark on Whispering Springs Thu, 15 May 2008 15:17:00 CST April 12, 1981, was when Mark Trepanier first took over Sunset Shores Supper Club, which he and his wife, Patty, then operated for 12 years. Ironically, it was on April 12 of this year that Mark and Patty signed the paperwork to take ownership of Whispering Springs Golf Club atop the ledge on the east side of Fond du Lac. Growing up, Marks experience wasnt as a restaurateur, but rather in retail, as his dad owned a couple of liquor stores and a bowling alley in Fond du Lac. Everything is customer service, Mark said. It isnt brain surgery. Its basic business, and how you treat the customer. It isnt that difficult, though it is hard to implement because most dont want to take the time and effort and make the sacrifice. After selling Sunset Shores, Mark did a number of things including going back and helping out with his fathers business, selling cars at Holiday Auto and working with Knecht Realty as an appraiser. My daughter, Colleen, was still trying to find her niche, said Mark. She had grown up around the business when we ran Sunset, so when the old Hardees building became available, we checked it out, remodeled it, opened it as The Backyard, and its been going great ever since. Over the years, Mark had kept abreast of the goings-on at Whispering Springs. Ive always been interested in the location, having played there when it was Town and Country, and then Ledgewood. Negotiations with owner Ed Huck began in the fall of 2007, and Mark started thinking of a support staff. Barb Casper has been known for her golf skills and ability to teach for a long time, said Mark. We started talking. I asked if she would be interested in being head pro if I would be able to accomplish the purchase. Shes a great people person. Barb has been playing golf since she was 12. After graduating from Goodrich High School, she spent a couple years at UW-Madison on a golf scholarship. In an effort to find herself, she enlisted in the U.S Air Force. After a five-year stint, she came home to find her parents, Bill and Kathy, building a par-three golf course. For the next ten years she ran what became Thornbrook Golf Course. Then in 2002, said Barb, I was hired as an assistant pro at Whispering Springs. That was until the fall of 06 when I had the opportunity to work at South Hills. I was there for a year until Mark offered me the head pro position back here. Barb is the only female head golf pro in the state. Its my first head pro spot, unless you count when I ran Thornbrook, said Barb. I learned a lot running that business, and what I bring with me from that experience is that the customer is always right. You treat people the way you yourself would like to be treated. I think we have a fantastic golf course here. In the state, I think its in the top ten. Were also looking to build a strong junior program, Barb said. Ann Marie Sztukowski, who is a junior at UW-Madison, is doing a summer project for school revolving around First Tee. (First Tee is a golf development program targeting youth.) Were planning a junior clinic with three sessions, beginners of any age, then 6-10 year olds that fit into the First Tee category. There will be more structure to that group teaching etiquette, sportsmanship, honesty, and so on. And there will be an advanced level, which will involve more actual playing. Im also organizing a ladies-learn-to-golf group, getting gals who either have never golfed or have played very little, to come out, do a short lesson, then get them on the course. Ill oftentimes get women who take several group lessons, and then never golf again, so I like to encourage them to get out onto the course to raise their level of comfort in the transition. The course and its care were next on Marks to-do list. Matt Schmitz is the other piece of the puzzle, Mark said. Carl Grassl was the superintendent, and I had put into the negotiations as one of the offers to purchase that if he didnt stay on, I would be out. I knew I had to have someone well-respected to take care of the product. I liken it to a restaurant without a great chef. Some may say, Well, he doesnt know much about a golf course, how can he do this Well, I dont know much about cooking either, but its important to have the right people around you. Carl, though, is at the age where he didnt want to be full-time any longer, and spring was approaching. I didnt think there would be many quality replacements available. After interviewing several candidates, Matt rose to the top of the list. Hes great at what he does, Mark said and he and his wife were interested in raising their three kids where they had both grown up. Im hoping he will be here a long time and grow with the course. Matt Schmitz grew up in rural Eden, spending a lot of time on his Grandpa Westphals farm, learning to drive tractors at a young age. All through high school he worked at South Hills Country Club in Fond du Lac on the maintenance crew. After graduating from Winnebago Lutheran Academy, he spent a little time in college. Ill be the first to admit that I wasnt very serious about it, Matt said. So instead, I went to work full-time for Scott Schaller at South Hills for a couple years until applying and being accepted at Penn State in their two-year turf program. Then, the summer of 1997, I did my internship at the Milwaukee Country Club. After graduating from Penn State, Matt was hired as assistant superintendent at the Milwaukee Country Club, and worked there until the spring of 03. Then I went to work for the Bruce Company as superintendent at Bishops Bay Country Club, Matt said. Then one day I got a call from my uncle who had heard that Mark might be buying Whispering Springs, and would I want to work there The next thing I knew, hed brought me on board Our ultimate goal is to have a golf course that people are excited about coming to play, Matt said. We want to build on and cultivate its reputation for being well-conditioned. Its like how Mark does great food at the Backyard Grill, hes known for it, and we want to translate that over to Whispering Springs. Offer exceptional playing conditions, but still at a great value. Matt also employs five full-time and five part-time workers on his grounds crew, including Carl Grassl. Hes going to stay on part-time, Matt said, which Im looking forward to, because Carl is a very well-known and accomplished superintendent, and I know Ill learn a lot from him. Another curiosity is future plans for the clubhouse. Not much will happen the rest of this season, Mark said, But, in the fall and winter well be adding a bar and grill downstairs. We want to have a little more consistency of open hours in the upstairs bar. And, were also thinking about doing a Saturday and Sunday morning breakfast, and not only for the golf season, but through the year, and be open for Badger and Packer games.
