Cemeterys scary reputation leads to stepped-up patrols Sun, 18 May 2008 09:51:00 CST TOWN OF CLYMAN The Dodge County Sheriffs Department has stepped up patrol around Eagle Road Cemetery in the town of Clyman after a resident reported seeing a lot of paranormal activity, especially at night. Officers have been told to check the graveyard during all shifts, according to a Dodge County Sheriffs Department log. Town of Clyman Chairman Dave Blank said he has lived in the area all his life and has never seen a ghost or haunting images, although he admits he has never been to the cemetery at night. The real problem isnt scary, he said, but a constant annoyance. Vandalism problems have been ongoing because of the cemeterys scary reputation. The problem is so bad, Blank said, that the town board is thinking of raising the loitering fine from $200 to $1,000. We wrote an ordinance banning any activity going on there at night or people being out there, he said. The worst was when someone did about $2,000 worth of damage to some gravestones, Sheriffs Lt. Trace Frost said patrols will be on the lookout for troublemakers who are drawn to the cemeterys reputation. The resident who reported the paranormal activity lives just down the road but declined to comment when contacted by The Reporter, stating that whenever publicity gets out about Eagle Road Cemetery, more destruction occurs. The graveyard dates backs to the 1800s and has a reputation for being the site of phenomena including apparitions in the graveyard at night, cold spots and breezes even on warm summer nights and epiphanies of the Virgin Mary, according to author Chad Lewis, who writes about haunted sites in Wisconsin. Lewis, a paranormal investigator and author of the series The Road Guide to Haunted Locations, writes that people have returned from the cemetery with blood on their hands and arms. The original name of the cemetery is said to be Evangelical Church Cemetery or Tabor Cemetery. At one time there was an Evangelical Church at the location, and the cemetery belonged to that congregation. The denomination, founded by Jacob Albright in 1807, is not Catholic, so reports of epiphanies of the Virgin Mary and possible stigmata seem out of place Blank said the last time someone was actually buried at Eagle Road Cemetery was in the early 1980s.
Journey over for many students, as UWO graduates more than 2,000 Sun, 18 May 2008 09:34:00 CST OSHKOSH -- Any apprehension Jessica Kamrath felt before taking the podium Saturday afternoon in Kolf Sports Center melted away as she looked out on hundreds of her smiling peers. It was a bit of dj vu for the Oshkosh native. I did graduate once already in 2005 with a bachelor of arts in communication, and I decided to go back to school, which was another three years, Kamrath, 28, said. The decision to return to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh to pursue a bachelor of science and education degree was the toughest choice she ever had to make, she told a crowd of thousands that filled bleachers inside Kolf. Her speech encompassed four words she said motivated her toward personal success, and provided a common thread that linked her and fellow graduates: just follow your heart. Its really important to make the choices youre confident about, versus just making an easy choice, Kamrath said. Its worth it in the end. During the afternoon ceremony of the 134th spring commencement, degrees were handed out to students in the colleges of business, education and human services, and nursing a 9 a.m. ceremony recognized graduates in the College of Letters and Science. For three consecutive years, the university has seen a record number of students graduate. This spring more than 2,000 bachelor and masters degrees were awarded, said Chancellor Richard Wells. And its not just about numbers, he said. They are knocking their socks of on certain tests We are graduating record numbers of better prepared students in the institution, and that brings confidence to incoming students.
Man arrested for attacking brothers with car, knife Sun, 18 May 2008 09:32:00 CST OSHKOSH -- A 22-year-old Oshkosh man was arrested early Saturday morning after allegedly trying to hit someone with his car and attempting to stab another with a knife. According to a news release, Oshkosh police responded to a residence in the 500 block of West Irving Avenue at 5:31 a.m. Saturday for a trespassing complaint. The caller told police two brothers had entered her residence without permission looking for her boyfriend. The release states officers located the brothers at their apartment in the 1600 block of Rainbow Drive, where they were issued citations for trespassing. Around 6:40 a.m. officers were called back to the apartment regarding phone threats made by the boyfriend of the victim on West Irving, the released stated. The officers arrived to find a car had crashed into the apartment building. The release states one brother told officers the 22-year-old man was inside the apartment trying to stab his brother. Officers found two men fighting, one holding a knife. Both subjects were separated and no one was stabbed during the incident, the release stated. Oshkosh Police officials say they later found out that the suspect saw one of the brothers outside the apartment building as he was driving up. He then accelerated, tried to hit the brother with his car and crashed instead into the apartment building. No one was injured.
Roller derby league miffed over Flag Day Parade rejection Sun, 18 May 2008 09:29:00 CST APPLETON Now theyve done it. The Appleton Flag Day Parade Committee has angered 73 women whose sport of choice requires helmets, knee and elbow pads, and still leaves them bruised and battered. The committee rejected the Fox Cityz Foxz roller derby leagues application to appear with the punk rock band Highball Hooligans in the 2008 Flag Day parade June 14. They said roller derby girls and a punk band dont sound very patriotic, said Delonna Kaufman, also known as Wring Leader, who founded the Fox Cityz Foxz in September. Were really patriotic and were very community-oriented. I got my feelings hurt. Roller derby jammer Anya B. Hinds is also indignant. Were not about the skanky 70s stereotype, said Hinds, whose first name is really Beth. She runs her own company and is married to a youth minister. This is sportsmanship. Parade spokesman Don Burich says it isnt the quality of their characters that eliminated the Foxz and the Hooligans. It was the quality of their application. A letter goes out with every entry form, Burich said. In bold, it says: All entries must be of a patriotic theme, be decorated accordingly and properly display the flag. Kaufman concedes the entry didnt go into much detail about how the Foxz intended to decorate the flatbed on which the Hooligans would ride, and didnt explain that they planned to display the flag. I just assumed we realize anything were going to do will have a patriotic theme, the Wring Leader said. The Foxz called the selection committee after they got the rejection letter. They said we were planning to make it patriotic and so forth, Burich said. It was not described that way on the application. The entry application didnt meet parade policy and criteria. This event has one goal, which is to honor the flag through patriotism. The committee accepts everybody who meets the criteria, Burich said. This years entrants number about 100. Among the other rejects were the Fox Valley Force, a semi-pro football team from Green Bay, and the AARP. The Forces entry was too commercial, parade Chairman Greg Otis said, and the AARPs, which was simply a vehicle decorated with the image of a cross between the Democrats donkey and Republicans elephant, too political. The parade suggested that since The Foxz didnt make the cut for the parade, they instead help with security. The Foxz indignation deepened. We are patriotic, Kaufman said. According to the Wring Leader, the Foxz have raised $10,000 for local charities since September. We support our communities. We dont want to be dumb security. The Foxz dont intend to give up easily. Even though the committees rejection letter says its decisions are final, the league sent in an amended application Tuesday, explaining how it plans to decorate its flatbed trailer and display the flag. I think they dont take us as seriously, Kaufman said. We are a force to be reckoned with. On the Web: www.foxcityzfoxz.com.
