New tower system to improve communication Mon, 19 May 2008 15:23:00 CST New radio towers are going up all over Fond du Lac County as part of a planned emergency communication system overhaul. Erection of the first tower of the $3.5-million, six-tower system is underway at the City County Government Center, 160 S. Macy St. The 250-foot tower went up Friday, but is not complete. Construction crews will add a 20-foot antenna to the tower once a room is prepared to house the ancillary equipment. Five other towers are in various stages of construction. Work will begin on a tower in Brandon this week. The Northwoods tower, located near Highway 26 north of Rosendale, is also scheduled to being soon, said Fond du Lac County Director of Administration Ellen Sorenson. The County is in the process of acquiring land for two other towers. The sixth tower in the system is the existing Tower Road tower, Sorenson said. The size of the towers will vary, she said. The new towers are expected to improve communications throughout the county and also conform to federal mandates. Local law enforcement, firefighters and other emergency personnel use the system, Sorenson said.
FdL library buying new bookmobile Mon, 19 May 2008 15:18:00 CST Fond du Lac Public Library officials are in the process of purchasing a $12,000 used bookmobile from the Oshkosh Public Library that could hold some 3,500 books, said Assistant Director Cheryl Loehr. If the library buys the bookmobile, it could be used as a satellite library campus set up near Festival Foods, 1125 E. Johnson St. The sale is still pending the approval of the Oshkosh Library Board. Placing the bookmobile at Festival would make it more convenient for those who live farther from the city to use library services, Loehr said. Operating hours for the satellite bookmobile have not been set, she said. We want to bring the books to where people already congregate, said Library Director Ken Hall. Patrons would be able to request materials from the main library for pickup from the satellite facility, Hall said. The bookmobile would be stationary once set up, so it would not require diesel fuel. Hall said he expects to have the new bookmobile operational by July 1.

bSpotlight letter: /b Casino would solve river front development Mon, 19 May 2008 13:02:00 CST First off let me tell you that I am a life long resident of Oshkosh and would like to see this city move forward. A direction that seems to be easily lost. After reading the letters to the editor on May 18, I must say that Fritz Rhyner is right on the money with his suggestion. Why not a casino It seems to me it would be a win-win situation. All you have now is a lot of vacant space and empty promises. Weve already seen one proposal go down the drain and now the second one seems to be in serious trouble. A casino would bring in outside money not only to the casino but also to the entire town with jobs, new businesses, tax money, and people to our downtown area. The build it and they will come theory would work in this situation. Do you think there could be some follow up discussion on this subject How about asking the citizens their opinion on this matter, were all sick of looking at all the vacant properties and empty storefronts. I think the city is failing miserably in the real estate game they seem to be playing. And how about that Pioneer... bDennis Morasch /bOshkosh

Mercury Marine hopeful even as parent company struggles Mon, 19 May 2008 07:04:00 CST FOND DU LAC (AP) - Officials at Mercury Marine say the Fond du Lac company is reassessing its strengths after its parent company announced a manufacturing slowdown. Mercury Marine makes boat engines as a subsidiary of Brunswick Corporation, based in Lake Forest, Illinois. Last week Brunswick said it will close a production facility in its boat-building division on July 1. Shutting down the plant in Newberry, South Carolina will eliminate 175 jobs. Mercury spokesman Steve Fleming says he doesnt expect the shutdown to affect Mercurys sales. He says the company is actively working with dealers to make sure they keep stocking Mercury engines. But Brunswicks chief executive isnt as optimistic. Dustan McCoy says the economy and fuel prices are taking their toll on consumer spending.
