The annual program will include unveiling names added to the towns Veterans Memorial, a roll call of veterans buried in town of Byron cemeteries, a firing squad salute and an open house exhibit sharing personal stories of soldiers and families on the home front. The open house will be held 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The outdoor program begins at 9:15 a.m. All events take place at the town hall, N3097 Highway 175, Byron. The certificates of appreciation will be personalized and presented jointly by the Town of Byron Veterans Memorial Committee and the Byron Historical Society, sponsors of the program. The certificates will be presented to all town of Byron veterans attending the Memorial Day program. Certificates will also be presented to family members of deceased town of Byron veterans. In addition, all veterans in attendance will receive a commemorative veteran lapel button. | FdL Police participate in Amber Alert test Friday Thu, 22 May 2008 17:22:00 CST The Fond du Lac Police Department will review its missing child procedures Friday during a statewide Amber Alert System test, said Major Kevin Lemke. At 9:10 a.m. Friday, the Child Abduction Emergency Code will be used during a live test, with an audio portion announcing that it is only a test. A visual crawl message will be broadcast on TV stations and cable stating that child abduction emergency exists with the words this is a test displayed after the message, according to the Wisconsin Attorney Generals office press release. The Fond du Lac Police Department has several practices in place to get the word out if a child is missing, Lemke said. A newsletter detailing information about the missing child is sent out to media outlets, highway messages alerting drivers to tune into their local outlets for more information and Amber Alert information is immediately displayed on the computer screens with officers squad cars and sent to their e-mails, he said. The city watch program allows an automated message to be sent to the telephones of those in a selected area, he said. That message will relay information about the missing child. As part of the statewide test, highway message boards will not be activated, while outdoor digital signboards will be activated, according to the release. Wisconsins Amber Alert system has had 14 activations and successfully recovered 20 children. The success of the Amber Alert system is directly related to the partnership of alert citizens and the media with local law enforcement, said Attorney General J.B. Hollen in the press release. Wisconsin wireless subscribers can help in the search for an abducted child by signing up at www.amberalertwisconsin.org to receive free Amber Alerts notifications on their cell phones. Subscribers can designate up to five geographic areas from which they would like to receive Amber Alert notifications. For more information regarding missing persons in Wisconsin, please visit www.doj.state.wi.us. |
Officers revive inmate after suicide attempt Thu, 22 May 2008 16:55:00 CST JUNEAU Three Dodge County Sheriffs Department employees and a Dodge County Jail nurse are credited with saving the life of a jail inmate last month who was attempting to commit suicide. Detention Facility Administrator Rodney Kreitzman said the response of the staff played a significant role in saving the inmates life. It is true that we have facility policies and procedures on how to handle these events and that we train for them. It is quite another to perform them successfully while under the stress of the emergency, Kreitzman said. In a world where people want to make a difference in the life of another, these staff members certainly did. On April 30, jail officer Duane Olbinski was alerted that an inmate who was lying in a cell with a sheet tied around his neck. Olbinski immediately notified facility staff that there was a medical emergency and began administering CPR after determining the inmate was not breathing and had no pulse, according to the release. Jail nurse Dawn Csiasek also responded to assist Olbinski. An automatic external defibrillator was brought to the scene and hooked up to the inmate. Officer Kevin Kluck took over chest compressions for Olbinski and continued until relieved by the Juneau EMS. Officer Stephanie Chavez was at the officer station in the pod when the incident occurred. Once the call of a medical emergency went out, Chavez provided immediate access to the pod for the facility staff and Juneau EMS. Chavez also played a critical role in locking down the rest of the inmates in the pod so staff could concentrate on tending to the inmate. Sheriff Todd Nehls said the staff was able to get a pulse on the inmate prior to the arrival of EMS. I am very thankful to have staff of this caliber at the Detention Facility, said Nehls. We have never had a successful suicide in the facility since it opened in December of 2000. The inmate was transported to Beaver Dam Community Hospital and transferred to University Hospital and Clinics in Madison where he was placed in intensive care for several days. He has since been released and is back at the Dodge County Jail.

Trial set for accused drug runner Thu, 22 May 2008 16:23:00 CST BEAVER DAM A 31-year-old Milwaukee man accused of running drugs in Dodge County has been bound over for trial. Frederick Couch appeared in Dodge County Circuit Court Thursday morning for his preliminary hearing. Couch is charged with possession of cocaine with intent to deliver. Couch was among three people taken into custody in March after members of the Dodge County Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force served a search warrant at a North Spring Street residence in Beaver Dam, according to police reports. Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls said law enforcement officers had been investigating the trio for the sale of crack cocaine in the Beaver Dam area. Investigators recovered a quarter-ounce of crack cocaine from the residence, which has a street value of about $550. Drug paraphernalia was also recovered from the residence, according to the criminal complaint. An arraignment hearing has been set for June 4.
Privacy laws thwarting gas theft investigation Thu, 22 May 2008 12:06:00 CST JUNEAU Hospital confidentiality laws appear to be hampering the Dodge County Sheriff Departments search for suspects who may have been injured while attempting to siphon gasoline from equipment at a town of Beaver Dam salvage yard on May 18. Due to evidence left at the scene, authorities believe the attempt to tap gasoline from equipment parked at Wallys Auto Salvage was thwarted when one of the vehicles burst into flames. In a statement released earlier this week, authorities were asking for the publics help in locating one or two individuals that may have suffered significant burns to the arms and upper body. Federal HIPPA laws have been a roadblock in the investigation, said Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls. Should the perpetrators have sought medical treatment we would have been unsuccessful in getting that data from our local medical facilities, said Nehls. The patient privacy law known as the Health Insurance Protection and Portability Act (HIPPA) prevents medical facilities from releasing patient records. While hospitals are mandated reporters in alerting law enforcement in the treatment of gunshot wounds, Nehls said the interpretation of HIPPA laws by law enforcement and hospital officials differ in this case. The Dodge County Sheriffs Office will be working with the courts to find a way to get the information we need, Nehls said. Anyone with information is asked to contact 1-800-78-CRIME for a cash reward or Detective Robert Neuman at (920) 386-3713.

Man faces trial in Dodge County gun theft Thu, 22 May 2008 11:55:00 CST JUNEAU A 31-year-old Milwaukee man accused of stealing firearms from a Dodge County home has been bound over for trial. Shannon L. Smith entered a not guilty plea after waiving his preliminary hearing Thursday in Dodge County Circuit Court. The Milwaukee man is charged with burglary/arming self with a dangerous weapon and two counts of theft. If convicted, Smith faces up to 27 years in prison and $70,000 in fines. Smith is currently being held in the Waukesha County Jail on burglary charges stemming from an April 4 incident in Waukesha County. Dodge County Sheriffs deputies were called to a Juneau residence on March 23. Stephen Rovics told police that someone had entered their unlocked home over the weekend and had removed three firearms from underneath his sons bed, according to the criminal complaint. During the investigation, an official from Waukesha County contacted Dodge County Sheriffs detectives to report that a roommate of Smiths had heard Smith bragging about stealing guns from a Juneau home. During questioning, Smith admitted to knowing the Rovics family and told officers he wanted to steal something and sell it to buy crack, according to the complaint.
