| State track: QA with Oshkosh Lourdes Adam Leib Sun, 01 Jun 2008 00:00:00 CST Adam Leib is a three-sport athlete at Oshkosh Lourdes in track, football and basketball. The senior said his greatest achievement happened Saturday when he stood atop the WIAA Division 3 state track and field podium peak with a first-place long jump of 21 feet, 6.5 inches. He has competed at state four years, placing 11th in the long jump his first trip to La Crosse. As a sophomore, he placed third in long jump and 11th in the 100. Last year, he was 7th in the 100-meter dash, 12th in the 200 and fourth in the long jump. Saturday, the champion donned his medal and took time to speak with The Northwestern. Here is the interview: Q: How did you get into the three sports A: I love football. I did basketball to stay in shape for track. I wasnt really thinking of doing track my freshman year, I kind of got forced into it. I was leaning towards doing it or not, but I ended up doing it. Q: Is it weird transitioning from inside The Castle during basketball season with all the noise and the announcer to track when meets are rather quiet A: It is obviously different. You are going from inside where it is warm to where it was freezing this track season. Without coach (Nick) Behnke announcing, it is definitely different. Q: What happened this last basketball season in the playoffs against Randolph (Lourdes lost 68-28) A: Going into regionals and playing Randolph, I thought we went in focused and prepared. We lost to them by six our second game there during the season. Q: Now you wrapped up your high school career, are you proud of what you accomplished A: Yeah I am, especially after my knee surgery and everything my junior year. Q: What is the one moment in any sport that really sticks out A: Today, the first place. Q: Is it nice because it is an individual award A: That is what I like about track. I know it is a team sport based on points, but I like the individuality. You cant blame anyone but yourself for screwing up. Q: You are going to UW-Oshkosh, but did you have another place in mind A: It was between Oshkosh and Milwaukee. I decided to go to Oshkosh because I didnt know if I wanted to play football or not. Q: What events do you want to participate in as a Titan A: Id like to get into a relay or keep doing the 100. Hopefully they will develop me into a better track athlete. Q: What aspect of the UW-Oshkosh track team excites you A: The coaching and the kids. I know a few of the kids on there. I know the long jump state champ from last year and there are kids from Wautoma and stuff. We practice over at (J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium) and I always talk to them. Q: Is there a track event you wish you could do A: Pole vault. We dont have it, but it looks like it would be fun to do. Q: Do you like the smaller school athletics or would you like to be in the atmosphere of an Oshkosh North versus Oshkosh West game at Kolf Sports Center A: Ive been in smaller schools all my life. I think I would like Lourdes better than somewhere else. I go to North-West games and it is crazy there. Obviously it is a lot of fun for the athletes, but I would stay at Lourdes. Q: The coach mentioned you have a large tattoo on your back. Could you explain that A: I have a tattoo going across the top of my back. It is my grandpas nickname, Rocky. I just put it on there to kind of guide me. He was just always there for my sports, even flag football. He passed away when I was in sixth grade. Q: Can you explain the connection you two had A: I was young, but it was just amazing how much he cared about me and the sports I played, like flag football and YMCA tackle football. Q: What would his reaction be to seeing you become a state champion A: I think he would be the most proud of me out of anybody. Him and my grandma would be competing. Q: Were your parents OK with the tattoo A: I dont know about my mom, but me and my dad look at getting tattoos as getting one that means something to you, not just a random thing. Obviously this means a lot to me, so he didnt care. Originally I wanted this to be small, but then I saw it and it looked cool. Q: Will you get any future tats A: Probably one of my Grandmas name. Q: What is your favorite TV show A: The First 48. It is on AE and it is like a homicide show. It is just a great show. Q: What is your favorite movie A: Beerfest. It is just the same actors from Super Troopers and it is just a great, funny movie. Q: What is your favorite food and restaurant A: Favorite is mashed potatoes and my restaurant is Wendys. |
| State track: QA with Berlins Claire Rindo Sun, 01 Jun 2008 00:04:00 CST Claire Rindo almost became a soccer player her freshman year at Berlin High School. Luckily for coach Steve Stellmacher and the University of Minnesota, the running phenom and sewing fanatic chose to run fast and leave the ball behind. She has earned many accomplishments in four years after besides the obvious meet, invite, regional and sectional victories. Rindo qualified for state her freshman year of track. She advanced to state in cross country her sophomore year, but missed the state track meet with a stress fracture. She then placed third in the 3,200-meter run and second in the 1,600 two consecutive years in La Crosse. For cross country, her peak was a second-place finish her senior year. Rindo took time to speak with The Northwestern inside Veterans Memorial Field after her 1,600. Here is the interview: Q: Did you participate in track in middle school A: Yeah, I was a sprinter and did events like the 100. I didnt do distance races until my last race of middle school. I won it, it was like 6:02. Q: As soon as you found your potential in running, did you put soccer to the side A: Yeah, I love soccer, but I always had some fear of getting hit by the ball. I just really liked the running part of it. I always wanted to play midfield and run around for the ball. Deep down, I really like running. All my friends liked soccer. Q: Any other sports perk your interest A: I would love to play basketball because one of my good friends is an awesome basketball player and she just shakes her head when I try to shoot a free throw. I am not into playing other sports, I like to watch them. Q: What is it about running you love so much A: I just like the challenge you can put on yourself. It is really just yourself, your body. You know, all those cheesy T-shirt quotes: no pads, no timeouts. It is just me testing myself. I learned about how I can push myself. It is just fun. You meet a lot of cool people, too. Q: Do you like track or cross country more A: I get asked that a lot. It is hard to say. Now that track is over, I am thinking about cross country. I love the team atmosphere in cross because it is not a variety of events. You are all doing the same thing so you can train together for all the different courses. I love track because I am a split girl, I love knowing my splits. I cant really pick Q: Do you have and idols or Olympians you admire A: Not really anyone in the Olympics. My coaches are really big factors with me. They have been awesome. Not really for their running experience, but for the kind of people they are and how they help others. Q: You have a personal coach, right A: Yeah, people call him the personal coach. (Cal Kromm) works with guys in cross country and I asked him to help me out some more with track. What he did in cross helped me a lot. Q: Is it nice to have a relatable young coach A: Hes an awesome coach. He feels like a coach, but a lot of times we will run together and he feels like someone who understands when I am nervous and knows what I am feeling without me saying it. Q: What was your worst injury A: I had four stress fractures. It was one in one leg and three in the other. Actually, it was kind of like a blessing in disguise. I learned alternate training methods and how to stay healthy. I dont really regret it, even though it was a bummer when it happened. Q: You are very high-energy. Can you just sit down and read a book or something A: I like to sew a lot. That is probably the relaxing thing I do. I just go on my sewing machine or quilt. I sew more than I read. Q: What items do you sew A: I usually sew when I am injured. During my stress fractures, I sewed a quote quilt. It has all these inspirational quotes on it. Ive made shirts Ive been able to wear to school. Q: How did you get into sewing A: My mom used to quilt a lot when I was younger and she still does. I began with her and branched off into my own thing. I dont really use patterns, I just try it on, sew some more, then pin and try again. Q: Your dad is University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh English professor Ron Rindo. What is it like to have an English teacher as a dad A: I am a pretty good writer, but my (twin) brother can word things real well. I love reading his stuff too. It is great having my dad as a writer and I love reading his books. It is fun because he thinks differently. Q: Do your parents have an athletic background A: My dad was a hurdler. He hurdled and played football in high school. He went to Carroll College and played football and track. Q: What options were open to you for college A: I looked very closely at Minnesota and Illinois State. I dabbled around with Northwestern for a while and UW-Oshkosh was always in my head too. The reason I did not go to UWO is that I am that typical senior who feels the need to get away from home for a while. Q: What attracted you to the University of Minnesota A: I always kind of liked it. It was definitely the coaches and being on campus, it gave me a Wisconsin feel, you know, a Midwest feel. It feels like a family, and everyone is so friendly. Q: Ever think about going somewhere warm A: Occasionally I get frustrated because it is icy out and I want to run. I just like running in cooler climates. Q: Do you have an idea what your major will be A: Right now, it is kinesiology. I think I am pretty sold with that. I got into a graphics class at school and graphic design interests me. Q: How far do you want to take running A: I will take it as far as I can. I do not want to put any boundaries on myself because anything can happen. My high school coaches helped me with being confident and never counting myself out. I am hoping my college coaches can help me hold back a little more. When I train, I tend to go all out every day. That is what leads me to all these injuries. |
