Man bound over in child enticement case Sat, 28 Jun 2008 14:07:00 CST JUNEAU A 37-year-old Fox Lake man arrested in connection with an attempted abduction near Fox Lake has been bound over for trial. Daniel M. Stranc waived his right to a preliminary hearing Thursday in Dodge County Circuit Court. He is charged with two counts of child enticement, one count of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a child. Stranc was arrested June 4 at his mothers Fox Lake home after police were able to trace his whereabouts through citizen tips. If convicted, Stranc faces a maximum penalty of 4 years prison and $210,000 in fines. Stranc is being held in the Dodge County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond. At approximately 6:30 p.m. on May 31, two girls, ages 14 and 10, were making their way home along Spring Road when Stranc pulled up alongside them in a purple Plymouth Voyager van and asked if the girls needed a ride home, according to the criminal complaint. Stranc told investigators that the girls looked abandoned and lost. However, when the girls refused his offer, Stranc allegedly drove down the road, turned his van around and again offered the girls a ride. The girls told police that this time Stranc got out of the van, opened the passenger side door and attempted to grab the 14-year-old girl, according to the criminal complaint. During questioning, Stranc said that prior to his encounter with the girls, he had been at a party earlier that afternoon at a Randolph residence where he had consumed alcohol and smoked marijuana. Stranc, who said he believed he was high at the time of the incident on Spring Road, told investigators that he only wanted to share his marijuana with the girls. Stranc also told investigators that he is attracted to young girls, and if the opportunity to have sex with the girls presented itself, he would have taken advantage of it, according to the complaint. Stranc also admitted to offering marijuana to an 11-year-old girl while at the Randolph residence that afternoon, believing the girl was at least 16 years old, according to the complaint.
Woman facing 7th OWI competent to stand trial Sat, 28 Jun 2008 14:00:00 CST JUNEAU A Marshall woman arrested for her seventh drunken driving incident is competent to stand trial. Judge Andrew Bissonnette made the ruling in a case against Barbara Pickhardt, 45, during a competency hearing held last week in Dodge County Circuit Court. Under a new law, a conviction for seventh, eighth or ninth offense OWI carries a maximum punishment of a $25,000 fine and five years imprisonment followed by five years extended supervision, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Under the old law, all fifth and subsequent convictions for operating while intoxicated carried a maximum penalty of $10,000 in fines and three years imprisonment followed by three years extended supervision. Pickhardt was injured in a rollover crash at about 4 p.m. April 5 on County Trunk TT in the town of Elba after she had been involved in a hit-and-run accident minutes earlier. Dodge County Sheriffs deputies found an open vodka bottle near Pickhardts overturned car, according to the criminal complaint. During questioning, Pickhardt seemed incredulous that she was in a car accident and denied operating a motor vehicle, the complaint said. The driver involved in the hit-and-run accident identified Pickhardt as the operator of the vehicle that hit him, according to the complaint. When asked how much she had to drink, Pickhardt responded by saying a ton. After being cleared from the hospital, Pickhardt was transported to a detoxification center, according to the complaint. A blood alcohol report was not available. Bissonnette denied a motion to modify Pickhardts bail. She remains in the Dodge County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 cash bond.
Mercury Marine union ratifies contract Sat, 28 Jun 2008 13:51:00 CST Both sides at the negotiating table at Mercury Marine breathed a sigh of relief Saturday after union workers voted to ratify a four-year contract. Union President Mark Zillges said he believes its a fair contract considering the company is facing a tenuous economy in an industry that makes expensive toys. It isnt a show-stopper, but I can live with the changes. Its the times, and the company knows its hard, he said. About 85 percent of the 1,300 members of the International Association of Machinists Local Lodge 1947 in attendance Saturday at the plants union hall voted to support a contract that allows for a boost in salary each year, a slight bump up in insurance costs and a buyout offer for senior workers, Zillges said. Company and union officials worked nearly six months to reach the contract agreement, employing interest-based bargaining techniques to ensure that concerns of both parties were addressed, according to a Mercury press release issued Saturday. Both sides worked very hard to pay attention to what was important to the membership employees while balancing those needs with the overall cost structure of our Fond du Lac operations, said Dennis Rooney, vice president and chief spokesperson for Mercury. The unions 1,550 Mercury Marine employees had suspended contract talks in April, and members voted then to authorize the right to strike.
