| Appleton police nab burglar drenched in barbecue sauce Wed, 02 Jul 2008 15:59:00 CST APPLETON Police early today arrested a man drenched in barbecue sauce after being called to a home for a burglary in progress. Officers responded to a home in the 1600 block of Wilmer Street just after 4:30 a.m. The couple living there heard whistling coming from their basement after the alarm clock sounded, police report. The male resident armed himself with a shotgun and went to the basement stairs to find the light on. He turned the lights off, which led the burglar to ask what he was doing. The burglar, who turned 35 today, left the basement and put his hands up upon seeing the firearm. The burglar said he entered the home because he was on the run from the government, according to police. The barbecue sauce, he said, was an urban disguise. The man was wearing the womans jacket and the mans hat upon arrest, police report. His shoes had been left in the basement. The man was booked into the Outagamie County Jail on one count of burglary. Items taken from the home included a can of soda and a bottle of barbecue sauce. | ||
| ESPN: Favre gets itch to come out of retirement Wed, 02 Jul 2008 15:53:00 CST ESPNs Chris Mortensen is reporting that Brett Favre has an itch to come out of retirement and wants to play for the Green Bay Packers again. Mortensen, citing sources close to the Packers and Favre, said Favre has talked recently to coach Mike McCarthy about a possible return. Favre retired on March 4 and said goodbye in a tearful news conference two days later. Since then, there have been several reports about Favre possibly having a desire to return to the NFL. All offseason, however, the Packers have done everything possible to try and move on from the Favre era. They chose the regular-season opener on Sept. 8 against Minnesota to retire his jersey. Time and again, McCarthy and General Manager Ted Thompson have publicly backed Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback. Mortensens report said Favres family was tugging on him to play, and that Favre was getting the itch to play football this season. Favres agent, Bus Cook, told ESPN that he wasnt expecting Favre to return. As far as I know, right now, Brett Favre is retired and until he tells me something different, thats what it is, Cook said. | ||
| Investigation into double fatality reveals no wrongdoing Wed, 02 Jul 2008 14:27:00 CST There was little a 68-year-old Chilton woman could have done to avoid hitting a man whod been thrown from his motorcycle after hitting a deer, a crash investigation has revealed. The accident ended up claiming the lives of the driver of the motorcycle, Andrew J. Tridento Jr., 41, and his fiance, Lisa M. Wolf, 35, both of 33 Fifth St. Neither were wearing a helmet. Tridento was driving north on Highway 151 near Minawa Beach Road in the town of Taycheedah at 9:53 p.m. June 26, with Wolf riding as a passenger, when the motorcycle collided with a deer. Both Tridento and Wolf were thrown from the cycle, with Wolf landing on the shoulder of the roadway and Tridento landing in the middle of the northbound lane, not far from where his cycle ended up, said Lt. Rick Olig of the Fond du Lac County Sheriffs Department. A short time later, Diane C. Jaeckels, 68, of Chilton, was driving north in the same area and struck both Tridento and the motorcycle. He (Tridento) was alive after she hit him, Olig said. He ended up dying in the helicopter (responding to the crash scene) before it took off. Wolf was transported by helicopter to Theda Clark Medical Center and died Saturday of head injuries, Olig said. Wolfs death marked the fifth traffic death so far this year in Fond du Lac County. Olig said alcohol was not a factor in the accident. He added that Jaeckels had no vision problems. The area where the crash occurred was pitch black at the time, Olig said. There were no stars out, no street lights, no artificial lights, no moon visible, it was pitch black, he said. Like Tridento, who likely had little time to react before hitting the deer, Olig said it appeared Jaeckels did not have time to avoid striking Tridento. Hes (Tridento) going down the road and probably the last thing hed anticipate, especially this time of year, is a deer jumping out, Olig said. Its literally the same thing with her (Jaeckels) she was driving down the road and theres a motorcycle. | ||

| Brownsville youth guilty in cat shooting Wed, 02 Jul 2008 13:02:00 CST JUNEAU A deferred prosecution agreement has been reached in a case involving a Brownsville man accused of shooting a cat in the eye. Patrick Dalle-Nogare, 17, was found guilty on a misdemeanor charge of mistreatment of animals during a hearing Wednesday in Dodge County Circuit Court. Judge John Storck ordered the deferred prosecution agreement, which allows the defendant to escape prosecution by agreeing to certain terms for a specific length of time. A Theresa woman told police that she believes Dalle-Nogare was responsible for shooting her 4-month-old cat in the eye with an arrow on Sept. 24, 2007. She told officers she was very shocked, sick and upset that someone would do this to an animal. She also told officers if they didnt bring charges against the person responsible, she would contact PETA and have them look into the matter, according to the criminal complaint. During the investigation, Dalle-Nogare told officers that he was hunting on the womans property when he saw the cat near a barn. The Brownsville teen said he aimed at the cat but didnt think he would hit it and fired, according to the complaint. The woman told officers they were able to remove the arrow from the cats eye and did not have to take the animal to a veterinarian, according to the complaint. Dalle-Nogare is also scheduled to appear in court on two unrelated cases for hunting and trapping ordinance violations. | ||

| Favre considering return Wed, 02 Jul 2008 19:27:00 CST GREEN BAY Brett Favre dismissed an ESPN report that hes considering coming out of retirement as all rumor. Favre responded Wednesday to the ESPN report by telling his hometown newspaper Web site, SunHerald.com in Gulfport, Miss., that its all rumor. The paper reported that Favre sent a text message saying theres no reason for a media frenzy. ESPN reported that an unidentified Packers source said the 38-year-old Favre told coach Mike McCarthy in the past two weeks that he has the itch to play. The Packers have no reaction, team spokesman Jeff Blumb told The Associated Press. Favres agent, James Bus Cook, didnt return a message seeking comment. Packers general manager Ted Thompson and McCarthy were on vacation. Favre retired March 6 after a 17-year career. Cornerback Al Harris said on ESPNs NFL Live that Favre made similar comments to him. I know he has the itch to come back and play, Harris said. If he will or not, I dont know. The Packers plan to use Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season, and hes been leading the team through organized team activities and minicamp. Rodgers has been groomed to take over for Favre since being selected in the first round in 2005, but has played sparingly. Aaron is our quarterback, Harris said. Bretts retired. But if he wanted to come back, there would be some guys who wouldnt mind it. I would welcome him back with open arms. Favre has two years left on his contract at an average of about $12.5 million per season. The Packers placed him on the reserve-retired list in the spring so his salary does not now count toward the cap. Favres commitment to retirement has been questioned since his announcement. That talk resumed in mid-June when Favre withdrew from the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe, scheduled for July 11-13. Tournament spokesman Steve Griffith said then that Favre had to miss the event because of a scheduling conflict. When he retired, a teary Favre said, Ive given everything I possibly could give to this organization, the game of football, and I dont think Ive got anything left to give And thats it. I know I can play. But I dont think I want to. But less than two months later, he told reporters he might be open to returning if Rodgers was injured. Favre, a three-time MVP, leads the league with 442 touchdown passes, 61,655 yards passing and 160 career victories. He started 253 consecutive regular-season games, more than any other quarterback in history. Including the playoffs, his streak stands at 275. Rodgers, meanwhile, has stirred up controversy himself this week. In a Sports Illustrated article, the quarterback said he didnt feel pressure to connect with fans the way Favre did. I dont feel I need to sell myself to the fans, he said in the article. They need to get on board now or keep their mouths shut. | ||

| Chemical spill closes Highway 54 in Plover Wed, 02 Jul 2008 12:43:00 CST A tank carrying approximately 175 gallons of hydrochloric acid fell off the back of a semi truck on Highway 54 near Grant Avenue in the village of Plover this morning. Authorities closed the highway just west of Post Road to clean up the spill. The road was still closed at noon. Hazardous materials teams from the Whiting Fire Department and Waupaca county were dispatched to the scene. The tank was laying in the center median of the highway, and some of the acid pooled in a nearby ditch. According to Lt. Dan Kontos of the Portage County Sheriffs Department, the truck was leaving the So-White building on 54 when it turned west and the tank fell. There was a vapor cloud when I arrived on the scene, Kontos said. I could smell it as soon as I got out of my truck. Authorities will set up a series of booms and dikes to keep the chemical from penetrating the ground and reaching the ground water. The next step will be to apply soda ash to neutralize the spill and then remove the tank, Kontos said. The chemical is used to clean concrete and can be harmful if inhaled, Conditions are good right now because the wind is out, said Plover Fire Chief Tim Kluck. At this time we arent evacuating the nearby businesses. The chemical is used to clean concrete and can be harmful if inhaled, Kluck said. The state Department of Natural Resources, the Portage County Sheriffs Department, the Plover Police Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol also responded. Kluck said it could be until 1 p.m. until the tank is removed and the road re-opened. | ||

| Outdoor film series to begin Movie night: Outdoor films beginFree, outdoor movie showings starting next week might be the new cure for cases of "the Mondays."Volume One is set to start up The Back-Alley Summer Cinema series for the fourth consecutive summer at 9:30 p.m. Monday, with a showing of "Waitress."The event is an outdoor showing of many older and obscure films in the alley next to Bottle and Barrel in what would be 205 Graham Ave. - if there were a building there."To us this is our most interesting and fun and unique event that we bring to the table," said Volume One Editor and Publisher, and cinema series volunteer Nick Meyer. "The concert series that we do in Phoenix Park on Thursday nights has gotten all the attention and all of the sponsorship dollars."This is more unique because it has a smaller cross section of fans, but those tend to be really enthusiastic about it."Moviegoers of all ages are welcome, but Meyer said parents should use discretion when bringing children as some films feature adult ratings. The films are projected onto an 18-foot wide screen and complimented by professional audio. To top off the genuine "at the movies" experience, concessions also are available.Whether it is another chance to see the classics on the big screen or maybe a first chance to see a non-mainstream movie on the big screen, the cinema series has sparked large amounts of interest locally.Meyer said in past years typically the showings would draw 150 to 200 people."I think the location is unique to the point that just seeing a movie, no matter what the movie is, is an experience in itself," said Jeremy Gragert of Eau Claire. "The type of event that it is, it can be an obscure film but there's going to be an audience for it."Gragert has been a fan of the cinema series since its beginning and volunteers with WHYS radio, a sponsor of the event.Though the popularity of the Back-Alley Cinema Series has been unwavering thus far, funding has not been so steady. The series got on its feet through local grants, but has since been cut off."We've been kind of unsuccessful in getting sponsors," Meyer said. "And that's fine, but we want to make sure that we are able to keep it going."In its debut summer, 13 movies were shown.Because of those funding issues, the number of films shown each summer has decreased, leaving fans with just six opportunities to catch a flick. | ||
| Luehrs:
'I have
been a
letdown' Ben Luehrs, former star athlete and senior class president at Hudson High School, and potential starting quarterback next fall at UW-Eau Claire, has taken a few steps backward during the past year.He said he realizes it and knows he needs to change his actions and demeanor to halt the skid.Placed on probation earlier this year for vandalizing several school districts last year, including Eau Claire, Luehrs has been cited and charged with various other crimes in recent months, including: drunken driving, possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct.Luehrs' most recent incident involved being stopped for erratic driving in Hudson on June 24 and being cited for drunken driving and violating conditions of probation. He was released Tuesday after spending a week in the Eau Claire County Jail. When contacted Wednesday, Luehrs, who is living in Eau Claire this summer, gave a prepared statement in a telephone interview."I take full responsibility for my behavior over the last year. I have been a letdown to many people in both the community of Eau Claire, as well as St. Croix County. I am very sorry for my behavior. It is time for me to start behaving like the citizen I was raised to be. I have caused a lot of damage and I intend to start repairing it."Luehrs, 19, a UW-Eau Claire sophomore, is scheduled to return to St. Croix County Court on July 14 for a review of his probation on the conviction of being party to criminal damage to property.State Department of Corrections officials on Wednesday said they will be evaluating Luehrs' recent cases when determining if they will file a request to have his probation revoked.Luehrs was one of 14 people convicted of causing about $35,000 in damage to property in the Eau Claire, Menomonie, Hudson and New Richmond districts with spray paint and weed killer in early June 2007.Luehrs has starred at quarterback for the Eau Claire Crush semi-pro football team this season but missed Saturday's game. Coach Dan Brown said Luehrs missed the game because of a family commitment, but he was actually in jail.Luehrs failed field sobriety tests and had a blood alcohol level of 0.11 percent on June 24, according to Hudson police records. A 30-pack of beer and one open can of beer was found in the vehicle.Michael Van Ness, 21, of Hudson, also convicted in the vandalism spree, was a passenger in Luehrs' vehicle. Van Ness had a blood alcohol level of 0.16 when tested, according to police reports.Van Ness was released from the St. Croix County Jail on Tuesday. Van Ness' case will be handled by probation officials in St. Croix County. No hearing is scheduled for him.According to police and court records:Luehrs was cited by UW-Eau Claire police on Jan. 26 for disorderly conduct and underage drinking. He pleaded guilty to the underage charge on Feb. 20 and paid a $249 fine. The disorderly conduct charge, that involved a lewd act on a university footbridge, was dismissed.Luehrs is scheduled to appear July 21 in Eau Claire County Court on the drug paraphernalia charge. In that case, he is accused of having a glass pipe with burned marijuana in his vehicle when police spotted his car parked diagonally in the middle of Garfield Avenue on April 6.
| Hudson woman guilty of killing motorcyclist HUDSON - A former Hudson woman convicted of killing a motorcyclist at a Hudson intersection last fall repeatedly apologized for her actions before being placed on five years probation Wednesday in St. Croix County Court.Victoria M. Bear, 57, who now has a St. Paul address, pleaded no contest and was found guilty in April of homicide by negligent operation of a motor vehicle.Judge Eric Lundell withheld sentencing and placed Bear on probation. Conditions of probation include a year in jail, $16,730 in restitution for the victim's family for funeral and other expenses, 200 hours of community service, revocation of her driver's license for one year and alcohol treatment.Lundell said Bear's remorsefulness was a factor in his decision to place her on probation instead of issuing a prison sentence. Bear, in an emotional statement, said Wednesday that she did not see the motorcycle driven by Michael Strauch, 55, before pulling out in front of him. He died in the accident. Bear said she was filled with remorse, sadness and shame for her actions, according to court records.Bear drove her sport utility vehicle into the path of the motorcycle at a Hudson intersection on Sept. 23. An accident reconstruction expert determined that Bear failed to yield the right of way to Strauch.A Strauch relative commented to the court on behalf of the family, giving accolades about Strauch and voicing frustration that Bear likely drove under the influence of an intoxicant at the time of the accident.Police reports indicate Bear said she drank wine before the accident, but Hudson police gave Bear a ride home after the accident before administering any blood alcohol level tests. | ||
| Man charged with theft of pool cues CHIPPEWA FALLS - A Jim Falls man is accused of stealing $25,000 worth of pool cues from his employer, The Pool People, in Chippewa Falls.Jason Mertes, 30, has been charged with a felony count of theft from a business in excess of $10,000. He was arrested Tuesday and taken to the Chippewa County Jail, where he was held on a $1,000 signature bond. His next court date is July 10.Chippewa Falls Police Investigator Bob Adams said Mertes is accused of stealing about 50 pool cues from work, beginning in April."He was giving them away as gifts, and he was selling them to pawn shops," Adams said. "They were at pawn shops in Eau Claire, and he took one over to Menomonie. He was getting about $50 a pool cue."The pool cues, now in the evidence locker at the Police Department, are still wrapped in their original packaging, showing prices ranging from $65 to $379."He told (pawnshop workers) he was a wholesaler for Pool People," Adams said. "They were very cooperative with us and worked with us."All but two of the pool cues sold to the pawn shops were recovered, Adams said. The Pool People reported to police in April that doors were being left open and some items were missing."They started missing pool cues, and inventory was short," Adams said."Little things weren't adding up."Adams said Mertes missed his last few days of work and sent his wife in to pick up his final check. One of Mertes' relatives told police that Mertes had given him a pool cue as a gift.Adams said Mertes had declined to show up at the police station for interviews, so a warrant for his arrest was issued earlier this week. Mertes finally came to the Police Department at 8 a.m. Tuesday for an interview, and he was taken into custody.Vetter can be reached at 723-0303 or chris.vetter@ecpc.com. | ||
| Staskal release plan OK'd without home JANESVILLE - Judge Michael Byron on Wednesday approved a conditional-release plan for Mark Staskal without a specific new placement, and it was unclear whether the public will learn where Staskal will live through a public hearing in open court.Staskal will continue to live at Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison until the state Department of Health and Family Services finds him a new home in Dane County.Whether the public will learn where the new home is through a court hearing remains murky.Staskal, 44, a former Milton resident, killed his younger sister, Marcy, in their Milton home in 1984. Found not guilty by reason of mental disease, he was sent to Mendota. In January 2007, Byron ordered him released conditionally - over the objections of his parents, Redgie and Melly Staskal of Milton, and despite split psychiatric opinions on whether Staskal should be released to the community.Except for a brief stay last November at a group home in Eau Claire, The Bernice and Genevieve Foundation at 3806 Woodcrest Court, Staskal has lived at Mendota since his trial. Sixteen similar homes in Wisconsin had rejected the state's attempt to place Staskal. The Eau Claire group home didn't work out for Staskal because he started having violent daydreams that his conditional-release team thought could indicate his mental condition was worsening. The daily psychiatric contact that the team thought was necessary was not available to Staskal in Eau Claire.Staskal's move to Eau Claire sparked concerns from south side residents who were upset they were not informed the convicted killer had moved into their neighborhood.Assistant District Attorney Ray Jablonski asked Rodney Miller, who oversees the department's conditional-release program, if the department would notify the court of a new home for Staskal ahead of such a placement so the district attorney's office could check out the proposed home."We will comply with whatever the court orders," Miller replied. But none of the attorneys involved - Jablonksi; Staskal's lawyer, Phillip Brehm or Marc McCrory, Staskal's parents' lawyer - heard the judge issue such an order.Noting that he could not comment on pending cases, Byron declined to expound on his statements in court.During the hearing, the judge noted that the conditional-release law for people found not guilty by reason of mental disease is different from the law regarding release of sex offenders. The sex offender release law requires public disclosure of an address; the conditional-release law does not, Byron said.McCrory argued that if the judge does not formally approve a specific new placement, he would cede authority given to the judiciary to the Department of Health and Family Services, which is part of the executive branch of government."If the plan is to keep him at Mendota, we don't think there's a problem," said McCrory, who then used a baseball trade analogy: "But we can't have a 'player to be named later' regarding placement. It's OK if they come back to you (Byron) to get approval of a placement."If the state's plan is to place Staskal "somewhere, someplace ... you didn't get to do your job," McCrory told the judge.Brehm said while he didn't hear a court order regarding notification of placement, "in a practical sense that's what's going to happen."Staskal's parents fear their son will kill again if released to a group home. They think he is best served at Mendota because of its safety, security, structure and professional staff. The conditional-release plan calls for Staskal to have more experiences in the community outside of Mendota before he leaves the institution. He will be escorted on such excursions and activities for at least 30 days. After the hearing, Melly Staskal echoed the thoughts of many in the courtroom: "I'm not sure I understand it. But it's kind of scary to me because I don't understand all that was said in there. ... I think the placement is very important because Mark will be spending a good deal of time at that placement."Starting to cry, Melly Staskal said: "We're Mark's parents. But we're Marcy's parents too. I don't believe Marcy's name was ever mentioned today, and she's suffered the biggest loss."She strongly objected to her son's being released without a judicial OK of where and how he will live. The department also asked Byron to rescind his conditional-release order. The judge did not.DuPre' is a reporter for The Janesville Gazette. | ||

| Town Vibe :: RE: Where do you think stolen bikes go? Author: robbie webber Posted: Thu Jul 03, 2008 12:50 am (GMT -5) Topic Replies: 10 Friend of mine is a cop in another city. He's also a bicyclist, and rides with another guy (Phil). Phil's nice bike gets stolen, but he sees it in a garage a few days later as he's walking around town. Phil knocks on the door and an older man comes to the door. Phil explains that he thinks the bike in the garage is his, but the older man says, "No it isn't. That bike belongs to my son. He's had it for a couple years." Phil goes and gets my cop friend, and they go back to the house. Same older man answers the door, and is pretty belligerent. Phil says he can prove it's his bike. Walks into the garage, pulls the seat out of the tube, reaches in, and pulls out a rolled up photo of himself. Needless to say, the guy and his son get busted. Turns out they had a whole high-end bike chop shop in the basement. | ||

In case you forgot, telephone pollsters were implying that John McCain fathered an illegitimate "black child", who is actually his adopted son from Bangladesh. http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080128/banks Karl Rove truly is the devil.
| Restaurant Reviews :: Authentic Cajun/Creole Author: madmatt77 Subject: Authentic Cajun/Creole Posted: Wed Jul 02, 2008 11:49 pm (GMT -5) Topic Replies: 0 Can anybody point me in the direction of a good authentic Cajun/Creole restaurant in Madison? I've seen a few Cajun Carry-outs around, but was assured by a friend that they were no good. Ideally, this place would have delicious seafood and some good dessert options (beignets, bread pudding). | ||
| Restaurant Reviews :: RE: Mickey's Food Author: madmatt77 Posted: Wed Jul 02, 2008 11:21 pm (GMT -5) Topic Replies: 3 The sandwiches are good, but the homemade slaw, which I normally hate, is really delicious. That coupled with an excellent jukebox selection makes it one of my favorite spots in Madison. | ||
| In the news :: RE: Arrest in Marino Case Author: massimo Posted: Wed Jul 02, 2008 11:00 pm (GMT -5) Topic Replies: 38 Bump. You know, I'm not really that sincerely concerned about the feelings of the survivors, I mean, my heart goes out to them, but I do not know them. On the other hand, I'm not going to go out of my way to post defamatory theories about their loved ones' demises, because I recognize that doing that might cause pain and I certainly wouldn't want to do that, even given the remote possibility that someone affected would be reading my posts. So. Go ahead and twist this and do your troll thing if that's what you want to do, but know that I don't really care about this discussion, because you and I are just fake people behind fake names and none of this chatter matters. | ||
