Ripon, Green Lake among Best Small Towns Sun, 06 Jul 2008 10:10:00 CST Three area small towns have been named winners in a Best Small Towns poll by Wonders of Wisconsin, an organization determined to find the best of what the state has to offer. Three-thousand people voted on the Wonders Web site this year putting Princeton among the top five of Wisconsins shopping towns. Ripon was named among the best historic towns in the state and Green Lake earned distinction as a town with great food and a place for a great family weekend. Fifty members of the extended Spiezio family have known for years that Green Lake is among the best small towns in Wisconsin for a family weekend. Spiezios of all ages have been staying at Green Way Log Cottages in the city for five years. They come from Illinois, Maryland, California and Wisconsin, from 12 different cities in all. They come to the Wisconsin city on the states deepest inland lake for a little recreation, rest and relaxation. The food at local restaurants isnt too shabby, either. The Spiezios favor Nortons and Adams Rib but admit its hard to pick a favorite. Green Lake is a wonderful community and it has a big, beautiful lake thats clean and not crowded, Denise Spiezio said. The Spiezios have found their ideal vacation spot. Well be coming for many more years to come, Im sure, Denise Spiezio said. When they run out of room at Green Way the Spiezios use Heidel House Resort for the spillover, she said. Princeton buzzes with shoppers Even on a rainy Wednesday, Princetons downtown is buzzing with tourists and shopkeepers. Kristin Galatowitsch, an attorney and proprietor of Twister, an eclectic shop in the heart of Princetons business district, is crouched down with a drill, putting finishing touches on the store caf which opened that day. Theres an air of excitement in the store as the chef makes salsa, panini sandwiches and quesadillas, and assembles cheese plates and salads loaded with fresh, local vegetables. Food is sold deli style for people who want to take it along to a park or wherever they happen to be going, Galatowitsch said. Becky Gordon and daughter Sarah, 10, of Texas, made their way into Twister to look for games for a rainy day, Gordon said. They had plenty of options, from stuffed animals, puzzles, board games and games that require a little building, to goggles that allow users to see in the dark and other fun gadgets. We dont live in a small town so this is intriguing to me, Gordon said. Food and toys arent the only things at Twister. Shoppers can choose among books, shoes, clothing, house wares and dcor pieces. Galatowitsch said the secret of Princetons popular shopping district is that it is never stagnant. Shop owners talk to each other in an effort to offer variety so that each trip to Princeton is an experience for each tourist. Her neighbor, Maura Koutoujian at Henrys, a general store, said the same thing. She opened 12 years ago and went through a period where she tried to be all things to all tourists. Shes back to her original agenda, focusing on those things that make her shop unique writing implements, jewelry, teas and gourmet items. Now were more of a boutique experience and dont have every tchotchke for everybody, Koutoujian said. Several new shops and restaurants have opened recently, including La Casbah featuring Mediterranean cuisine. Birthplace of the Republican Party Ripon College with its rolling green lawns and stately old buildings, some dating to pre-Civil War years, is one of the communitys claims to fame. Ripon is also home to a national landmark in the form of the Little White Schoolhouse, the birthplace of the Republic Party. That simple frame schoolhouse at 303 Blackburn St., built in 1850 one year before the college was established, holds a powerful history. It was here that a small group of Ripon citizens met on a cold and windy night in March of 1854 to form a new political party to fight the spread of slavery. The schoolhouse each years draws thousands of tourists to this city of some 7,600 people, many of whom stay to browse the shops in the citys historic downtown or wander through neighborhoods graced by numerous Victorian homes. These gracious painted ladies, dating to the 1800s and early 1900s, can be found in abundance on Watson, Ransom and other streets.
NTSB releases report on EAA AirVenture crash Sun, 06 Jul 2008 10:07:00 CST OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) - The National Transportation Safety Board says a deadly crash at EAA AirVenture last summer was partly due to a breakdown in communications between pilots. A North Dakota pilot was killed in the plane crash last July at the experimental air show as he was attempting to land. One war plane came down too close on top of another, clipping its tail and causing it to flip over. The other pilot did not suffer serious injuries. The NTSB says the pilots limited visibility also contributed to the crash.
DNR warden seeks speed limits on Wolf River Sun, 06 Jul 2008 10:05:00 CST OSHKOSH A speed limit for boats and other ordinances to regulate boat safety on the Wolf River could be in the works. Jeffery Knorr, conservation warden in Fremont for the state Department of Natural Resources, presented concerns and complaints he received about boating on the Wolf River. Im not asking for more money or more patrol time, Knorr said during a special session of the Winnebago County Board last Tuesday. Im simply asking for tangible rules that we can say with the boats being too big and too many people who are using this waterway. Supv. Nancy Barker recommended the judiciary and legislative committees look further into the issue. It is unbelievable with the speeds that they are, she said of the larger boats. If this is an issue, then this is something that we need to address. Knorr said that proposed laws should include setting a required distance between moving boats and anchored boats or boats with children in the water, as well as a boat speed limit. The warden said he had been suggest changes for six years through the DNRs Bureau of Law Enforcement. Everyone wants their slice of pie on the river, he said. More fishing tournaments are bringing larger and faster boats to the Wolf River, Knorr said. You have boats going 50-90 miles an hour, with no brakes, no airbags, and no seatbelts, he said. Knorr said there have been close calls, but he hopes that it will not take such an incident for changes to happen.

| Election Weekly: Whos who and whats what in the campaigns Sun, 06 Jul 2008 10:02:00 CST Nearly two years ago, Republicans learned how frail their hold in the reddest of Assembly districts was when national tides turned against their party. That year, Penny Bernard Schaber, a first-time Democratic candidate, came within 1,419 votes of upsetting Republican state Rep. Steve Wieckert in the 57th Assembly district seat. The district has been Republican for more than 90 years. It wasnt credentials against a veteran lawmaker that got Bernard Schaber far. Fact is, the current political environment has been hostile for the GOP, says Brian Murray, a former chairman of the Outagamie County Republican Party. But in the 57th district, which takes in most of Appleton and parts of Little Chute, Republican leaders are pinning their political hopes on a tight primary race between Appleton Ald. Peter Stueck and former Appleton Ald. Jo Egelhoff in September to fire up their base. The winner faces Bernard Schaber, who says she isnt taking votes for granted, but believes there is a strong chance of a Democratic victory in November. It gives us something to work on, Murray said. Weve got to just focus on winning our district and understanding the fact that Wisconsin voters are cross-ticket voters. We just have to rely on the good judgment of our Appleton residents and kind of take our eyes off the national campaign. Nothing against Stueck, says Murray, but he is backing Egelhoff in the primary, and her campaign already is targeting Bernard Schaber. A lot of your cornerstone, got-to-have-them Republican names are backing Jo Egelhoff, he said. It goes without saying that national races have a huge impact on party turnout. This concerns Stueck, even though every step along the campaign trail he downplays the power party identification has in the voting booth. Appleton is far more important than my party, Stueck said. When I make votes, I will be voting on whats best for Appleton, and not what my party might be suggesting I vote. Voters respond to the message, he said. Thats what government needs right now not people who are going to be listening to what their party bosses are telling them. The party tells him the states economy is the top issue. An advocate of having insurers cover people with pre-existing conditions, he thinks its health care issues. Bernard Schaber says she hears the same. Many people are worried that should they lose their job, they would no longer have health care and be in trouble. For Egelhoff, who is running on her fiscal experience, no other issue is as important as balancing the states budget. A downward spiral in the economy has created a deficit of more than $650 million in the 2007-09 state budget. My family needs to balance its budget every month, and for Wisconsin to be working in the red as it is, were playing catch-up. Its a negative situation for economic development, she said. The harder we work, the (more behind) we get. She says Appleton residents have saved thousands of dollars as a result of her leadership on the Common Council in getting a tax levy ordinance approved some 12 years ago, despite opposition from then-Mayor Richard DeBroux and the majority of the council. Spending in the city is kept at the level of inflation, plus a percent of new growth, she said. Essentially, spending in Appleton can only increase as fast as our household budgets can increase. | Hardy homers twice to help Brewers sweep Pirates Sun, 06 Jul 2008 16:24:00 CST MILWAUKEE - J.J. Hardy hit two homers, All-Star starter Ryan Braun added one and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-6 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep. Milwaukee tied franchise records with nine doubles and 12 extra-base hits to finish its fifth series sweep, all at home. The Brewers improved to 10 games over .500 for the first time this season. Hardy went 3-for-4 with four RBIs to raise his average to .446 over the last 18 games. He has been riding a hot streak since taking six days off with an aching shoulder last month. Saturday night, he gave up his 16-game hitting streak by laying down a sacrifice bunt in the ninth that eventually helped score the winning run. On Sunday, he kept swinging away, hitting a two-run homer in the first and adding a two-run shot in the fourth for his second two-homer game in the last six days. Hardys second shot put Milwaukee up for good 8-6 after the Brewers squandered a 4-0 lead. Milwaukee added another run off Pirates reliever Denny Bautista (1-1) on an RBI double by Corey Hart that scored Braun, named to his first All-Star game on Sunday, and reliever Sean Burnett gave up an RBI double to Bill Hall to make it 10-6. Brewers reliever Mitch Stetter (2-1) earned the win with two scoreless innings. Neither starter made it past the third inning. With the Pirates up 6-4, Zach Duke gave up RBI doubles to Hart and Hall in the third to make it 6-all and was chased when Jason Kendall singled to put runners on the corners with one out. That also ended Brewers starter Jeff Suppans day after he was pulled for a pinch hitter. Suppan is 1-2 with a 10.53 ERA in his last four starts. Pittsburgh scored six straight runs to erase a 4-0 deficit built by back-to-back homers by Hardy and Braun and an RBI single by Hall. Jason Bay led off the second with a 443-foot solo homer and the Pirates tied the game when All-Star Nate McLouth drove in three with a two-out double, the final of three straight hits. Pittsburgh, which scored eight runs in the series, took a 6-4 lead in the third off Adam LaRoches two-run homer, but it didnt last. |
What will the Packers do with Favre if he returns Sat, 05 Jul 2008 20:28:00 CST GREEN BAY The Green Bay Packers have four choices when it comes to Brett Favre and his apparent desire to return to the NFL. They could: Allow him to come back. Cut him and let him explore options with other teams. Trade him. Convince him that a return would be an unwise decision. A comeback The first option seemingly is out of the question. All indications are the Packers have moved on and have embraced life after Favre. The coaching staff has. Coach Mike McCarthy, offensive coordinator Joe Philbin and quarterbacks coach Tom Clements spent the offseason shaping the offense around Rodgers strengths. At the NFL annual meetings in Palm Beach, Fla., in early April, McCarthy discussed how the offense would be different with Rodgers. Whereas Favres best throw was the slant, Rodgers best throw is something different. Ill tell you what, Aaron can really drive the football, McCarthy said at the time. I would say what we refer to as the dog or the puma the 15-yard breaking route or the 15-yard out breaking route (are Rodgers best throws). At that time, preparations with Rodgers had just begun, but even then, McCarthy spoke of how the philosophy had shifted. Its important when you get into game planning (to) have that critical play in the game a third down or fourth down and you give the quarterback a play that hes totally familiar with so theres no guessing and he knows where everybodys at and you make it clean for him, McCarthy said. Were starting to build that list with Aaron. Ive always had one as a secondary game plan for when he was in the game, but now that hes the primary quarterback, well start to tailor that toward him. Since, the Packers have gone through an entire offseason program individual workouts, organized team activities and the mandatory minicamp honing the offensive concepts designed to emphasize Rodgers strengths. Even more than the coaching staff, the personnel department has embraced the post-Favre era. General manager Ted Thompson has been anxious to see Rodgers, his first first-round draft pick in Green Bay. He also restocked the position by using second- and seventh-round draft picks this year on quarterbacks Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn, respectively. Let him go The second option cutting Favre could become a reality if Favre insists he wants to play. There have been conflicting reports about whether Favre has asked for his release. One report said he has, and Thompson has denied it. Another said it has not come to that. Favre has said several times in recent years he has no desire to play for another team, but that was during his playing days. Now, with the Packers seemingly interested in moving on, Favre could be open to that possibility. A trade If the Packers arent interested in giving him away, they could explore the third option a trade. However, a deal could be difficult, especially if teams felt the Packers would have to release him anyway, and he could be had without giving up anything. Surely, Thompson would want a relatively high draft pick in return for Favre. But would a team give up, say, a second- or third-round draft pick for a player who probably only has a year or two left While playing elsewhere may seem appealing to Favre because he has an itch to return, the reality of how much work would be involved may make him reluctant to do that. Those options also would leave Thompson with a black mark on his record, branding him as the man who allowed Favre to get away. Stay retired The fourth option convincing Favre to stay retired seemingly would be the best for the Packers. This way, they wouldnt come off as being the bad guys for driving Favre out of town and to another team, something that likely would anger a large portion of Packers supporters. Theres no timetable for a solution to this issue. The outcome depends largely on how hard Favre pushes his desire to return. Rob Demovsky writes for the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
