FdL under severe thunderstorm watch Mon, 07 Jul 2008 16:33:00 CST Fond du Lac is one of several counties in southern Wisconsin under a severe thunderstorm watch issued at 3:50 p.m. today by the National Weather Service. The watch is in effect until 11 p.m. tonight.
Flash flood watch issued for FdL area Mon, 07 Jul 2008 14:58:00 CST One to two inches of rain is possible in the Fond du Lac area tonight as a storm front moves through the area. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch tonight mainly west of a line from Fond du Lac to Beaver Dam to Madison to Monroe. Strong thunderstorms in a very moist air mass will lead to locally heavy rains. Some lakes, rivers and streams remain above flood stage. Much of the Rock River in southern Wisconsin continues to experience moderate flooding, with portions still at major flood, according to the NWS. The forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of rain tonight, with severe storms, large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain possible in the Fond du Lac area. A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms remains in the forecast Tuesday, with heavy rain possible, according to the NWS. The primary threat will be high winds tonight, although there is some risk of hail and isolated tornadoes mainly over south central Wisconsin, according to the NWS. A chance of rain returns to the forecast Saturday and Sunday. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches and possibly higher amounts are expected over south central Wisconsin. Lesser amounts of rain but still heavy at times are possible over southeast Wisconsin, according to the NWS.
Police: Milwaukee shootings work of murder mob Mon, 07 Jul 2008 10:30:00 CST MILWAUKEE A shooting spree that left four people dead and two injured was the work of a murder mob from Chicago that relocated to Milwaukee, Police Chief Edward Flynn said Sunday. The gang is run by two brothers, one who is behind bars and the other who was just released from prison, Flynn said. This group has been responsible for an estimated two dozen murders in Milwaukee in the last 10 years. Flynn said. They are the most organized, most vicious, most aggressive gang on the north side of Milwaukee. The gang came to Milwaukee in the late 1990s and is now trying aggressively to take over the local drug trade, Flynn said. The shooting that prompted Flynns news conference occurred early Friday when gunmen fired into a crowd of 100 or more people, killing two men and two women. Flynn said the two male victims, ages 34 and 28, were members of the murder mob and were killed by two rival gangs as retaliation for a previous offense. The two women, ages 27 and 23, appear to have been innocent bystanders who got caught in the spray of bullets, Flynn said. Flynn said officers will begin patroling those streets every day, a move he hoped will embolden local residents who resist cooperating with police out of fear of gang retaliation. Police have not named any suspects in Fridays shootings. Flynn said a number of details were still under investigation, but police suspect there were multiple gunmen because different bullet casings have been recovered. Dozens of bullets were fired, he said, but it wasnt clear whether it was a one-sided shooting or whether anyone returned fire.
Wisconsin boosts offender search Mon, 07 Jul 2008 10:04:00 CST MADISON As many as 50 of Wisconsins most wanted sex offenders will soon find their pictures highlighted on a state Web site. The posting, which is planned for later this summer, is part of an ongoing effort to track down sex offenders who havent complied with state registration requirements. Information on the states most serious offenders, including their photos, has been posted online since October 2006. It was intended to highlight some of the more dangerous, high-profile registrants that were currently noncompliant with the registry so we could make them more visible to the general public, who hopefully would be able assist us in tracking these individuals down, said Melissa Roberts, director of sex offender programs for the state Department of Corrections. So far, the site has helped the state locate 57 wanted sex offenders, with 17 still at large and listed on the site. Roberts said the state hopes to have as many as 50 new people listed on the site by the end of the summer. We really want this to be highlighting what we believe to be the higher-risk (offenders), Roberts said. We may not need that threshold (because) we dont want to put folks up there that dont meet our criteria. The site was created at the direction of Gov. Jim Doyle. Getting these criminals off the streets and keeping people safe has to be a top priority, Doyle said in a statement. Weve done a good job hunting down Wisconsins most wanted and will continue to add more names to the list to keep more predators off the streets. The most wanted list includes people who may or may not be ordered to be under state supervision. But everyone on the site is supposed to be registered with the state. Roberts said the individuals are still at large after a state investigation process. All have active warrants for noncompliance. When located, the offenders face prosecution for noncompliance. Penalties range from fines to jail or prison time. This is an excellent tool for us to highlight these cases and get some help from folks on the street who might recognize these individuals, she said.
