Additional charges filed against TCI officer Wed, 09 Jul 2008 15:14:00 CST More charges have been filed against a Taycheedah Correctional Institution officer now accused of sexually assaulting six inmates. Jimmie Brown, 36, of Oshkosh, faces what amounts to nearly 680 years in prison on 17 counts of second-degree sexual assault by correctional staff after four charges were filed in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court earlier this week. The additional charges stem from allegations made by a sixth inmate who claims she had sex with Brown. A detective spoke with the sixth inmate after the 13 original charges involving the five inmates were filed against Brown in April. Brown appeared for an arraignment Wednesday afternoon where his attorney, William Mayer, entered not guilty pleas to all counts on Browns behalf. Also during the hearing, Fond du Lac County District Attorney Michael ORourke told the court new evidence uncovered during a search of Browns home computer showed the former TCI officer had been visiting Web sites that supported his case. There were sites found that had to do with guards having sex with inmates, ORourke said. According to a criminal complaint, Brown is accused of raping one inmate and having consensual sex with the others in various areas of the prison while he was employed as a correctional officer at TCI between May 2007 and April 2008. Under state statue, its illegal for prison staff to have sexual relationships with inmates. Brown continued to maintain his innocence at the hearing Wednesday. There is no physical evidence that I know of, just verbal assertions that these things happened, Mayer said of his client. ORourke contended the evidence against Brown was overwhelming. He said that evidence showed Brown got to know his victims and groomed them to fulfill what he wanted. This is not like some of the other cases of correctional officers sexually assaulting inmates. This is a case where there was a straight out forcible rape this is not a one time consensual act, ORourke said. This was methodical, where he groomed six inmates that we know of.

Grandkids and yard work high on retirees priority list Wed, 09 Jul 2008 09:32:00 CST APPLETON Men play with yards, women play with grandkids. That, in a nutshell, summarizes retired couples main retirement focuses, according to a recent national survey of 800 American adults age 60 to 74 conducted for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. The survey asked retirees to select their top priority from six everyday activities. Taking care of the yard and spending time with grandchildren were statistically tied for top billing among retired married/partnered men while spending time with grandchildren was the clear favorite among retired married/partnered women. The main retirement focus for retired males included: Taking care of things around the house and yard (28 percent) Spending time with grandchildren or other family members (26 percent) Enjoying things like playing golf, shopping, going out with friends (18 percent) Pursuing hobbies (12 percent) Volunteering in the community (seven percent) Watching where your money goes, clipping grocery coupons, etc. (six percent). The wives and partners of retired men over-estimated males focus on the house/yard by 10 percentage points (38 percent), under-estimated their focus on golfing/shopping/friends by 10 percentage points (8 percent) and accurately forecast their focus on family/grandchildren (26 percent). The main retirement focus for retired females included: Spending time with grandchildren or other family members (36 percent) Taking care of things around the house and yard (25 percent) Enjoying things like playing golf, shopping, going out with friends (16 percent) Pursuing hobbies (8 percent) Watching where your money goes, clipping grocery coupons, etc. (seven percent) Volunteering in the community (three percent). T he husbands and partners of retired women under-estimated females focus on the family/grandchildren by eight percentage points (28 percent) and over-estimated their focus on volunteerism by four percentage points (7 percent). The survey found that as retired males incomes increase, their focus on taking care of the house and yard diminishes from 43 percent to 17 percent. Conversely, as retired females incomes increase, their focus on taking care of the house and yard increases from 24 percent to 32 percent. Retirees of both genders having incomes of $40,000-$79,999 are most apt to cite spending time with grandchildren or other family members as their main focus in retirement. Thirty-four percent of males and 42 percent of females in this income bracket reported grandkids/family as their main retirement priority. Whatever ones retirement priority, proper planning help make it happen, said Mark Anema, vice president of accumulation and retirement income solutions for Thrivent Financial. Properly understanding the relationship between ones assets, income and spending allows retirees to address their life goals with confidence. About the Thrivent Financial Retirement Income Survey Data for this survey was collected via telephone interviews by the Discovery Research Group on behalf of Action Marketing Research. Discovery was responsible for collection of the data only. Action Marketing Research was responsible for the survey design and was solely responsible for data weighting and analysis. Interviewing took place between Dec. 1 and 13, 2007, among a nationwide cross section of 800 U.S. adults age 60 to 74 of whom 397 were men and 403 were women. Sixty-four percent of respondents indicated that they are retired, 16 percent identified themselves as partly retired and 20 percent considered themselves not retired.
Consumer alert: Beware of costly calls from jail Wed, 09 Jul 2008 09:21:00 CST A phone scam involving inmates from the Cook County Jail is impacting Wisconsin residents. All the inmates have to do is call you from the jail phone and get you to punch in call forwarding which launches their long distance calls often to foreign countries. You pay the phone bill. The latest complaints were forwarded to Consumer Protection by the Wisconsin State Patrol who heard from worried victims. These victims were called by criminals posing as state troopers who said that a relative of the consumer was in trouble and gave dialing instructions. After receiving at least four calls from families, the State Patrol asked Consumer Protection to investigate. We learned the calls came from Cook County Jail in Chicago. The facility is aware of the scam. Cook County Jail advises consumers to hang up quickly if you get such a call. Contact the jail at either (773) 869-3045 or (773) 869-6838 and they will block inmates from calling your phone. Making random calls, inmates try to get families to punch in 72 or other number sequences accessing international lines which sends out their long distance calls on your line. If you think you have been victimized, contact Consumer Protection to file a complaint and dial 73 to clear the call forwarding feature. Here are similar rip-offs that have occurred in Wisconsin: LI Families get a call from someone posing as a grandchild in trouble in a foreign country. Grandparents wire money to help. LI Families are told that a loved one needs help in a foreign country and here is their number. You run up a telephone bill for hundreds of dollars and a foreign telephone company and accomplices make a small fortune. For more information, call the toll free hotline of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection: 1-800-422-7128.
