| Baby born in state park bathroom doing well Sun, 20 Jul 2008 10:22:00 CST TOWN OF AUBURN A baby born to a woman who says she didnt know she was pregnant is doing well, officials said Sunday. The West Bend woman, said to be in her 20s, entered a Mauthe Lake Campground bathroom about 2 p.m. Saturday complaining of stomach pains, said Fond du Lac County Sheriffs Department Sgt. Ryan Waldschmidt. Her screams drew her boyfriend into the bathroom, where the woman was giving birth, according to the report. A nurse who heard the commotion helped get the baby breathing and cared for the infant girl until a Campbellsport ambulance arrived. The woman and baby were transported to St. Josephs Hospital in West Bend. |
| Toddler who drowned in family pool identified Sun, 20 Jul 2008 10:14:00 CST TOWN OF OSCEOLA A toddler who drowned Saturday morning in her family pool has been identified as Madison T. Gruber of N2716 Triple S Road, town of Osceola. The 15-month-old girl is the daughter of Andrew J. Gruber and Katie J. Benike, according to the Fond du Lac County Sheriffs Department report. The girls 9-year-old uncle saw her floating in the pool at 10:34 a.m. Saturday and pulled her out, Olig said. The girl was taken by ambulance to St. Agnes Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The toddler had been playing in the house. The home has a patio door that shuts, but doesnt lock, Olig said. The girls mother was home at the time. The 9-year-old saw the girl playing in the house and he went off to play, Olig said. He was looking for her and saw her in the pool. Olig said the pool is a large, permanent pool. |
| Counterfeit bills passed at Fair Sun, 20 Jul 2008 10:04:00 CST At least $200 worth of fake $20 bills have been passed at the Fond du Lac County Fair. The fake bills were turned into the Fair office from local service organizations and Fair officials contacted police, said Fond du Lac County Sheriffs Department Lt. Rick Olig. The bills apparently were passed at the Fair on Friday, he said. We really dont know how many bills were passed because some of the counterfeit money may have been handed out by the groups as change, Olig said. The source of the fake money is under investigation. |

The annual village festival began in 1967 when the residents seceded from the state as a mock protest for being left off the official state map. A severe thunderstorm caused festival organizers to call off the scheduled dance at 10:15 p.m. Saturday, said Marlene Lenz, village marketing director. However, the final day of the festival had much better weather than last year, said Arline Hoenecke, president of the Winneconne Historical Society. She recalled temperatures in the 90s. The festival also brought many people to Marble Park, Lenz said. At least 70 children participated in the new pirate treasure hunt sponsored by the local organization Building the WAY and 250 people visited the Winneconne Historical Society Museum Complex.
