Milwaukee archdiocese hires married priest Sun, 27 Jul 2008 10:20:00 CST MILWAUKEE (AP) The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has hired a married Roman Catholic priest with children a first in the archdioceses history. The priest, Father Michael Scheip, and his wife have juvenile and adult sons and are moving from the Diocese of Venice, Fla. She has accepted a job here. Although no married priest has served here, about 100 married priests have been ordained in the United States since the late Pope John Paul II created an exception in 1980 that allows married Lutheran and Anglican or Episcopal priests who have converted to Roman Catholicism to become priests, Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan wrote in a letter to priests and deacons recently. Scheip entered Catholicism in 1988 and was ordained in 1993 for the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J., by now-retired Cardinal Theodore McCarrick of Washington, D.C., Dolans letter says. He is also a former Lutheran minister. Dolan is working on a placement for him, archdiocesan spokeswoman Julie Wolf said Friday. In his letter, which some priests received by e-mail and mail on Thursday and Friday, Dolan says Scheip asked to be considered for a pastoral assignment here. His wife, Mary, has accepted a position at a Waukesha company, and his sons are enrolled in Catholic schools for the fall term, the letter says.

Good Samaritan victim of theft Sun, 27 Jul 2008 10:01:00 CST SHEBOYGAN -- A 34-year-old Sheboygan woman was arrested Friday night after allegedly stealing the wallet of a Good Samaritan who gave her a ride during a thunderstorm. During a severe thunderstorm July 16, a Sheboygan resident who works for the county Department of Human Services offered a ride to the woman and her 2-year-old son, police said. The (victim) was just getting off of work when she saw the person walking with a child in the area of Eighth and Erie, said Lt. Tim Eirich of the Sheboygan Police Department. Actually, the person is a client of hers and so she pulled over and offered her a ride because of the rain, thunder and lightning. Two hours after giving the woman a ride home and helping her carry groceries to her door, the victim was notified by her credit card company of unusual charges on her account, according to a police press release. The victim checked her purse and realized her wallet had been stolen. Police will ask the District Attorneys Office to charge the 34-year-old with theft, ID fraud, forgery and bail jumping.
Woman killed in Highway 23 crash Sun, 27 Jul 2008 09:59:00 CST PLYMOUTH -- A two-car collision on state Highway 23 in the Town of Plymouth killed one driver and injured another Saturday morning, according to the Sheboygan County Sheriffs Department. A 76-year-old woman was driving northbound on Pleasant View Road just before 10 a.m. when she pulled into the path of an eastbound vehicle on state Highway 23 driven by Karen K. Frye, 54, of Plymouth, the sheriffs department said in a press release. Both women were alone in their vehicles. Fryes 2007 GMC Sierra pickup truck struck the womans 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser, which had pulled into the intersection after stopping at the stop sign, the release said. Frye suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to St. Nicholas Hospital by Plymouth Ambulance. The other driver died at the scene. The sheriffs department said it is withholding the womans identity until this morning, pending notification of relatives. At this point, it would appear that the deceased victim was at fault for failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, said Stg. Jason Liermann of the sheriffs department. Liermann said alcohol was not a factor, but the 76-year-old woman was not wearing a seat belt. No citations have been issued and the crash remains under investigation. Deputies from the sheriffs department responded to the scene, as well as the Plymouth Police Department, Plymouth Ambulance and Plymouth Fire Department.
Fox Valley family turns a corner Sun, 27 Jul 2008 09:56:00 CST APPLETON Ryan Eldred and Barb Sheraski took a symbolic step in reclaiming their familys foundation Saturday. They remarried. The pair, who divorced in 2005 amid financial and health crises that almost broke up their household, made it official in front of 75 relatives and friends during an outdoor ceremony in Erb Park. Michael, 5, carried his parents wedding rings. His beaming brother and sister, Alex, 17, and Emily, 15, walked their mother, in her ivory bridal gown, down the aisle. Standing under a towering oak, Ryan and Barb repeated vows of love and respect regardless of obstacles, and Pastor Dave Vande Hey noted how they had worked through conflict and defined commitment. Maid of Honor Kathy Eldred, who with her husband, Wayne, put on the reception for their son and daughter-in-law, recalled the tough times they have endured and tearfully pronounced the wedding a hopeful sign. Its a celebration of family, she said. Just one year ago, Ryan and Barb and their three children were struggling with job loss, homelessness and medical setbacks. The Post-Crescent featured them in Working Hard, Still Poor, a report highlighting the Fox Cities working poor and their difficulties breaking out of poverty. Now, thanks to full-time employment well above minimum wage for Ryan, assistance for Michael who has autism, help from relatives and generous community donors who read the familys story and came forward, the family has, in Barbs words, turned a corner. Were above the poverty line. Whats changed for us is were not just in survival mode anymore, she said. We dont have to worry about food, clothes and shelter anymore. Were starting to deal with emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of our lives. Were shifting our focus to how to be a better family, better parents. Today, the family is proud to say they no longer rely on such nonprofits as Emergency Shelter of the Fox Valley, Salvation Army, Community Clothes Closet and St. Joseph Food Program, and that, they think, is a huge step forward. So Saturday was as much about celebrating getting back on their feet as it was about marriage vows. It feels really good, Ryan said. Really good. Here, Barb, Ryan and the children describe how their lives changed for the better this past year: Barb Barb, 38, had a list of positives to report, from Ryans new job stabilizing the family to Michaels therapy, Alexs college acceptance and Ryans Christmas Day marriage proposal. Donations ensured the children had everything they needed for last school year and helped the family stay afloat until Ryan found a new job. We did not need to access any community programs for support, she said. Along with staying up-to-date with the bills, paying family back and chipping away at debt, Barb said, We were able to celebrate birthdays and holidays with more pizzazz than before. Last Christmas was the best in seven years. The best part was Michael coming down the stairs Christmas morning and saying, Theres so many presents Ryan After he was laid off last summer, it took Ryan, 28, three weeks to find a new job at Alcan Packaging, a local plastics manufacturer. One bad thing led to a good thing, he said, noting that he grosses about $3,300 per month with overtime as a factory worker, and with a pay raise in August is on track to make close to $47,000 this year. I think its the best job Ive ever had, he said. It makes you feel good when you are back on your feet and independent. Things have improved so much, he said, weve even talked about buying a house but were not ready yet. We still owe too much money. Michael Eldred After a long wait for a government-funded slot to open up, Michael started intensive in-home therapy 35 hours per week through the Fox Valley Autism Treatment Program in February. He has made tremendous strides at home and school, which is a huge relief for all, Barb said. Hes been working really hard and growing and learning and we as a family are working on what we need to do to make a better environment for him. Michael, who will attend kindergarten at Horizons Elementary School this fall, discovered auto racing, his new favorite topic of conversation. I went to the race track in Kaukauna, he said. Alex Matuszak Alex graduated from Appleton East High School in June, earning a 3.89 grade point average his senior year. He will study computer science at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Mich., this fall, with scholarship assistance. He is happy about a few changes this year: We dont need to go to the food pantry anymore I can get the cereal I actually want Michael is getting therapy, I received a new computer and we had a good Christmas. I got no underwear, and thats good. While he still needs $13,000 to help pay college expenses this year Alex plans to sign up for the U.S. Armys ROTC program to ensure his tuition and other fees are covered. Emily Sheraski Emily finished freshman year at Appleton East High School. It was a good year and I met a lot of good friends and some cool teachers, she said. Along with marching in major city parades with pep band she also was able to get her bike fixed, she said, and Michaels therapy means more free time for her to hang with friends. The future biology major who dreams of becoming a pilot, is thinking about joining the Air Force to help pay for college. Emily said she is glad the familys financial struggles are not front and center every waking hour anymore. Now we worry about everything as a whole, not just money, she said. Seeing her mom marry Ryan Saturday was a definite positive, Emily said. It brings us closer together as a family, she said. I like seeing them happy.
Mother, baby fine after birth at state forest campground Sun, 27 Jul 2008 09:27:00 CST An unplanned pregnancy is one thing. Discovering that youre actually pregnant and in labor is another. But delivering that unexpected bundle of joy in the middle of a campground well, thats where Emily Brunner is in a category uniquely her own. Brunner, 25, of West Bend became a new mom on the afternoon of Saturday, July 19, when she went into a bathroom at Mauthe Lake Campground in the Kettle Moraine Forest, N1490 County Trunk GGG in the town of Auburn. I had no clue at all that I was pregnant, Brunner said. She never fathomed that the cramps she began experiencing that morning might actually be labor pains. During the day, her doting boyfriend, Levi Ziehr, 32, also of West Bend, left the campsite where they were spending the weekend to purchase over-the-counter medication he thought might alleviate her discomfort. We just thought that there was something going on with her and that she just wasnt feeling well, he said. About 3 p.m. that day, Brunner went into the bathroom, realized something was wrong and yelled out the door for Ziehr to call for help. Ziehr called 911 and during the course of that phone call went back to the bathroom where he found Brunner and a baby, both of whom were lying on the ground. I was in shock the whole time, he said. The hands of God Two campsites away from Brunner and Zier, geriatric nurse Angie Boutin of La Crosse heard the commotion and rushed to the scene to see if she could be of assistance. My husband had heard the boyfriend calling for help. He had said that some lady had just had a baby in the bathroom, Boutin said. At first, I really didnt believe that. She quickly learned that Brunner had, in fact, given birth in the bathroom. Then I saw that the baby was not breathing, I knew that the baby needed immediate assistance. So I took over, she said. She checked the babys mouth and started rubbing her chest. About a minute later, the 8-pound girl, who has since been named Kaitlyn Ziehr, began breathing, Boutin said. Authorities credit Boutins quick actions for saving Kaitlyns life. Boutin said she doubts the baby wouldve survived until an ambulance arrived. It was the hands of God at work, and we cant thank her enough, Ziehr said of Boutins actions. Brunner and her new baby were rushed by ambulance to West Bend Hospital, where both were examined. I was worried about her more than anything, Brunner said. I was still in shock but the nurses helped calm me down. Making room Kaitlyn was placed on oxygen and given antibiotics. Brunner quickly learned her new baby would be fine. The two were discharged Tuesday. Following the birth, Lt. Bill Flood of the Fond du Lac County Sheriffs Department, ordered an investigation to ensure no wrongdoing was involved. Officials say there was no reason to believe that either of the parents was lying or that any harm was meant for the child. Neither Ziehr nor Brunner, whove been dating for two years, were expecting young Kaitlyn. But now that reality has begun to set in with the new parents, they say they couldnt be happier with their new addition. Since the birth, Ziehr proposed to Brunner, and the two are planning to get married next summer. Brunner has taken time off work to care for Kaitlyn and recover from the pregnancy. And Ziehr and Brunner are making room in their two-bedroom apartment for their daughter. Right now, we sort of have our hands full, as you can imagine, Ziehr said. There has been plenty of disbelief over the surprise pregnancy. Brunner swears she had no idea that she was nine months pregnant. I had no idea. There were no symptoms, she said. If she could turn back time, Brunner said she wouldve gotten the proper care. But she sure wasnt going to complain about the basically painless labor. Every woman I talk to is jealous, Brunner said. They all say, You are so lucky that you didnt have to feel that pain.

Story, video: Sunday at AirVenture 2008 and a look inside the new control tower Sun, 27 Jul 2008 19:34:00 CST For Bill Mason of Connecticut theres nothing quite like the Midwestern atmosphere at the Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture in Oshkosh. Everything is so pleasant and easy going. Its really a family atmosphere. I havent seen a belly button or bare midriff yet, he said, chuckling as he rode a tram around EAA grounds Sunday, one day before the official opening of the 56th annual AirVenture. Mason has attended seven AirVentures so far, some with his wife Nancy. They are both pilots. This time he and a buddy made the 10-hour flight from Putnam and will stay until Wednesday. They have a To Do list that keeps growing because the opportunities for fun at EAA keep growing. Stuff here is no longer just for the flyer in the family, its for the whole family, Mason said. EAA grounds were abuzz with activity Sunday as early birds arrived, volunteers took their places and others worked to get ready for the week. Vehicles slowed to a crawl at times at mid day Sunday as motorists piled onto the grounds. Planes whizzed overhead to provide the background din for yet another big convention of pilots, aircraft builders and restorers and plane aficionados of all kinds at Wittman Regional Airport. Airplanes, tents and campers sprouted in vast fields on the airport grounds. Workers sweated in the bright sunlight as they erected display tents and trucks made their way slowly to deliver cases upon cases of bottled water and other supplies. Merchants loaded stacks of colorful T-shirts onto tables and gents in golf carts stopped to offer strangers rides. See the full story in Mondays paper.

The play originally was ruled an error by official scorer Tim ODriscoll, but was changed to a single one inning later. Lance Berkman followed with a single and Blum hit his second home run of the game and eighth this season to make it 8-4. Suppan continued his July struggles, giving up eight runs and 11 hits in six innings. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 9.43 ERA in four starts this month. Wolf pitched 4 1-3 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, and seven hits with three walks. He struck out three, but was removed in the fifth after throwing 101 pitches and Houston leading 8-4.
