Coach says QB not in right mind-set Tue, 05 Aug 2008 19:58:00 CST GREEN BAY The bond between Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers appears to be broken beyond repair. Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday evening that after approximately six hours of what he called brutally honest conversations with Favre over the past two days, the three-time MVP just isnt in the right mind-set to be part of the team. Even with the chance to win his starting job back potentially on the table, McCarthy said Favre couldnt seem to get past emotional wounds that were opened as tensions mounted in recent weeks. The football teams moving forward, McCarthy said. The train has left the station, whatever analogy you want. He needs to jump on the train and lets go. Or, if we cant get past things that have happened, I have to keep the train moving. McCarthy said he and Favre made plans to speak later Tuesday evening, but McCarthy didnt seem to allow for the possibility that anything significant would change. A trade could be coming next, with Tampa Bay re-emerging as a potential destination after seemingly being eliminated from consideration in recent weeks. Packers officials have believed throughout the past month that Favres preference is to play for the Minnesota Vikings, but Favre could reconsider a trade to Tampa Bay or elsewhere if Green Bay holds firm in its commitment not to trade him to a division rival. McCarthy wouldnt address trade talks, but did say a quick resolution to the situation is important to the rest of his players. Absolutely, McCarthy said. The players, they want it resolved. Even talk to Brett about it he feels bad about it. Its time for them to talk about somebody else. Favre left Lambeau Field just before Packers practice Tuesday afternoon, taking a right turn out of the stadiums back gate and heading away from the field where the rest of his teammates were assembling for drills. Favre emerged from the stadiums loading dock exit at 2:34 p.m. EDT Tuesday, hugging Packers senior security advisor Jerry Parins before getting in his SUV and driving away. Shortly after, an SUV driven by Packers general manager Ted Thompson left the gate heading in the same direction. Were at a stalemate, Favre told ESPN Tuesday morning. Mike and I both agreed last night that me being out there is a distraction and will continue to be a distraction. We all know the reason Im here is because the commissioner reinstated me so we have a lot of things to figure out. Its simple and complicated, both at the same time. McCarthy said Favre was excused from practice Tuesday, adding that he wouldnt have practiced with the team anyway because of an abdominal strain found in his physical examination Monday. McCarthy did not say whether Favre would be fined if he stayed away from camp starting Wednesday. Favre told ESPN he doesnt have a problem with competing with Rodgers for the starting job, and can truly understand why McCarthy would make Rodgers the starter. But Favre also said a competition probably isnt going to work and that the problem is that theres been a lot of damage done and I cant forget it. Did Favre not feel wanted or welcome enough by the Packers Thats part of the issue with him, quite frankly, McCarthy said. And listening to him talk about that, you respect his opinion. And frankly, I told him, I said, Ill take responsibility because I have a voice in the building. I never thought he truly was going to play. I thought he was emotionally driven for other reasons. McCarthy said Favre was very convincing in their conversations about his desire to play Monday night and Tuesday. But McCarthy still seemed to have reservations about Favres commitment to preparation. Would Favre continue to stay at Lambeau late at night to study film, a major factor in his success last season That was a very good question for him, McCarthy said. Hes in a tough spot right now. McCarthy also didnt seem convinced that Favre was thinking clearly about his future. He has a lot going through his head, and I think hes emotional, McCarthy said. And just talking to him, hes in a tough spot. So, of course, are McCarthy and Thompson. Correctly or not, they might end up being seen by fans as the men who drove Favre out of Green Bay. Thats not a good feeling, but I dont view it that way, McCarthy said. I can only trust the truth. Ive been part of a lot of conversations, and I dont feel thats the case. Rodgers, meanwhile, stuck to his mantra of not worrying about things he cant control. I just know we were out at practice today, and he wasnt there, and Im the starter, Rodgers said. So thats where were going right now. Speaking to reporters after Tuesdays practice, Rodgers stood just a few feet away from a locker with a FAVRE nameplate above it, stocked with shoulderpads and other equipment. It hadnt been used and now might never be. Cornerback Charles Woodson had a hard time imagining the Packers trading such an iconic player. Everything went kind of sour a few weeks or a month back, but you never felt like it would get to the point or to the talks of him actually being traded, Woodson said. I felt once he stepped back in here, he would be the quarterback. Him not being here today, I guess management has a different route. So at that point, weve got to go out and do our job.

The girl told authorities that she used to live near Funk, and the assaults sometimes occurred when he babysat for her or her parents were at work, the complaint stated. She said that she liked hanging around with him because he had pets, and indicated he gave her a laptop computer, a Sony Play station, Heely shoes, two bicycles, a shirt and some art supplies. The girls parents found out in March when she slipped them a note, the complaint stated. The jury trial is set to begin Oct. 6. Funk faces 120 years in prison if convicted of both charges. |
Van Dyne man guilty in hit-and-run case Tue, 05 Aug 2008 18:05:00 CST A pre-sentence investigation has been ordered for a Fond du Lac man convicted of hit-and-run involving great bodily harm. Fond du Lac Circuit Court Judge Peter Grimm dismissed 11 other charges during a sentencing hearing Tuesday for Jeffrey S. Liner, 35, of Van Dyne. Liner originally faced eight charges of injury involving intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and four hit-and-run charges involving injury, for an incident that occurred Feb. 1 in the town of Friendship. When officers arrived at the scene of a car accident around 2:17 a.m. on Highway 45, they found two vehicles with their front ends embedded in each other from a head-on collision. A 1999 Mazda included a driver Candi Wallendal and three passengers, who were all seriously injured in the crash, and were transported to the hospital, according to a criminal complaint. The passengers included Kristen Seimits, Jessica Lenert and Harry Reinhold. Liner, who had been driving the other vehicle, a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, was missing from the scene. Officers tracked his footprints in the snow to his home. He told authorities he fled because he was scared. Wallendal, the driver of the other vehicle, was also convicted of operating a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol content of .10 or more. Injuries caused by the accident were severe, according to the criminal complaint, and included broken bones, bruised internal organs, a collapsed lung, missing teeth and, in some cases, the need for reconstructive surgery. Liner faces a 15-year prison sentence and a $50,000 fine.

Action: Community asked to jump-start back-to-school effort Mon, 04 Aug 2008 14:38:00 CST Although summer is not quite over, many students realize that the start of school is right around the corner. For most students, that means cool new clothes, a stylish haircut and the best school supplies. However, for approximately 700 area students, and their parents, being able to afford the annual cost of school swag can be a challenge. Fortunately, with the help of The Salvation Army and a generous public, students in need can take advantage of the new and improved back-to-school program. Operating similar to The Salvation Army Angel Tree Christmas program, donors will adopt a student. Denise Shaffer, community development director for The Salvation Army, sees the refreshed program as a chance for the community to show it s about the education of area students. Our vision encompasses this as a community affair. Our goal is to develop this expanded program with the support, experience and help of Operation Back to School members and churches who have worked so hard putting the current Operation Back to School system in place, said Denise. By visiting the participating stores, Wal-Mart and ShopKo, donors will find an information station where they can select a post card printed with the first name, age and supply checklist of a student. The card will also tell what the student is interested in, such as a Hannah Montana backpack, as well as the students clothing and shoe size. All in one stop, the donor can purchase the backpack, fill it with school supplies and drop it off at either store or The Salvation Army. The backpacks and supplies will then be distributed at a family event to be held Saturday, Aug. 15, at Moraine Park Technical College. This event can be extended to medical, dental and eye care opportunities for entire families, not just children, explained Denise. Other possibilities include haircuts for kids and personal interaction to help parents know more about parenting classes, family resources, literacy assistance, financial assistance for further education and mentoring programs offered in our community. The new back-to-school program aims to include not only the student, but also the entire family. The Salvation Army hopes to meet these needs through a holistic approach. In addition to back-to-school supplies, its vision is to expand the back-to-school program to include needed clothes and shoes, said Denise. Moraine Park Technical College has been suggested as a distribution site, where it is hoped a strong presence by its faculty will plant seeds of hope for education beyond high school in childrens minds and will open doors for parents who would like to obtain their GED or further their skills through specific training that can be provided by a technical college. Keeping with the Olympic theme, students will be given passports to have stamped at each station. The passports will then be collected at the end of the day for a small prize. The program, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by pre-scheduled appointments, will conclude with the students receiving their backpacks and supplies. Just as helpful to the back-to-school program are monetary donations, as The Salvation Army uses the donations to purchase supplies that are still needed. All donations to the program are tax-deductible. Our vision is that this will be a family affair, offering not just back-to-school supplies, but a variety of fun activities for families to enjoy as they set aside the everyday challenges they face and focus on positive family growth and dynamics, Denise concluded. To find out more information on how you can help, call Denise at 923-8220.

No one injured in chemical spill Tue, 05 Aug 2008 07:09:00 CST Officials from the Oshkosh Fire Department said no one was injured after a pump leaked 300 pounds of muriatic acid Monday night at Hydrite Chemical Co., 191 W. 28th Ave., Oshkosh. About 9:45 p.m., a passerby reported grayish smoke near the facilit.y. A vapor cloud was spotted at 24th Avenue and Oregon Street. The acid, which mixed with rainwater in a catch basin outside the plant and combined with humid air, made a very large carbon dioxide cloud, said John Holland, public information officer for the Oshkosh Fire Department. Holland said fire department personnel monitored the cloud of carbon dioxide as it moved around. He said the cloud eventually dissipated after it went over Lake WInnebago. Holland said there were no evacuations of residents in the area of Hydrite Chemical and no firefighers suffered any ill effects from the acid cloud. Safety officials diverted traffic traveling from South Main Street to Oregon Avenue and blocked traffic at Waukau Avenue and 24th Avenue, as well as 24th Avenue and Doty Street. Holland said fire department personnel cleared from the scene of the Hydrite Chemical plant at 1 a.m. today.
