| Boy, 15, missing, presumed drowned off Sheboygans North Beach Sun, 10 Aug 2008 08:42:00 CST A 15-year-old Sheboygan boy was swept under high waves while swimming with four friends at North Beach at Deland Park on Saturday afternoon and is presumed drowned by authorities. Divers searched for nearly three hours for the boy, who went under about 15 feet off the rocks on the south side of the beach, before postponing the search at 6:28 p.m. because of poor conditions caused by high winds and huge waves. Authorities do not believe the boy survived. If we thought there was any chance for survivability, we would not suspend the search, said Lt. Steve Cobb of the Sheboygan Police Department, during a news conference at Deland Park. The search for the boys body will resume at 7:30 a.m. today, Cobb said. The victim was in a group of five teens, which included three other boys and one girl, swimming off the rocks when the incident occurred about 3:40 p.m. Four of the swimmers were able to make it back to the rocks, but the boy was seen struggling in the water, Cobb said. One of the other swimmers attempted to get the boy out, but the boy went under the water, Cobb said. A passerby called 911, officers showed up within three minutes and moments later, the Sheboygan Fire Department boat, a Coast Guard boat and several fire trucks and ambulances were at the scene. Sheboygan Police Lt. Brad Riddiough, who headed the City-County Dive Team that searched for the missing boy, called the decision to suspend the search extremely frustrating, but divers were being put at risk in the rough water. It wasnt a decision that was made quickly or easily, but we just felt that it was a risk benefit, that our divers were at such risk that we felt it was in the best interest of their safety at this point, Riddiough said. But it was a difficult decision and not one that we made lightly. Divers deemed the search too dangerous to continue after some members of the dive team were thrust into the rocks while looking for the missing boy. At one point late in the search, Riddiough said the strong waves pulled away the straps that were holding an air tank to a divers back. Police did not identify the boy Saturday. The boys mother, who was waiting in the fire departments mobile operations center, was advised of the decision to suspend the search, Cobb said. She understands the continued searching put the divers at risk, Cobb said. About 40 emergency personnel were involved in the rescue operation, including nine divers, who were being rotated constantly because of the big waves, cold water, fatigue and the need to replenish air tanks. The Coast Guard and fire department boats were tossed about in the waves, at one point colliding briefly. The divers, who were tethered to the Coast Guard boat, searched a large area in the hopes of finding the boy, but Riddiough said it was difficult to see anything in the murky water. Divers were being pulled down and out (in the water), Riddiough said. About 6 p.m., a Coast Guard helicopter arrived from Muskegon, Mich., to help in the search. Cobb said authorities sent for a helicopter from Milwaukee earlier in the afternoon, but bad weather kept it grounded. Cobb said the other four people who were swimming were two 15-year-old boys, a 14-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy. They waited in the command center while the search was going on. Cobb said he did not know if the victim was a strong swimmer. Thats still subject to investigation, he said. It was the third water rescue effort in the same North Beach area within a week. On Friday, a 14-year-old girl was rescued after she became exhausted, and this past Tuesday, a 9-year old girl whose inner tube was blown out onto the lake was pulled from the water by two people. Both girls were OK after being rescued. Cobb said people have to be careful when swimming in the lake. Its Lake Michigan, we have strong northeast winds today, the waves are much higher than normal, the waters much rougher than normal and people dont realize that and the combination of cold water, you can get quite exhausted, you can get hypothermic quite quickly, Cobb said. |
