Take a look around; this is a beautiful, ancient landscape Tue, 15 Apr 2008 23:29:20 CDT Going fishing? If so, you might be contributing to a very large economic impact on our area.
Have you read the preamble? Tue, 15 Apr 2008 23:00:39 CDT I’m a fourth-grader, and I just finished studying Wisconsin history. While studying, I found the preamble to the Wisconsin Constitution. It says, “We the people of Wisconsin, grateful to Almighty God for our freedom, in order to secure our blessings form a more perfect government, insure domestic tranquility, and promote the general welfare, do establish this constitution.”
Upset about the cross debate Tue, 15 Apr 2008 23:00:40 CDT For billions of Christians around the world, the cross is a powerful symbol of faith. For some African Americans, the cross has been a symbol of racial hatred. To Jews and Palestinians living during the crusades, the cross must have been regarded as a symbol of death and genocide. In all cases though, it is simply an idol, representing some idea that humans assign to it at a given time.
Anti-bias sign taken from yard Tue, 15 Apr 2008 23:00:42 CDT Recently, when I left to take my children to school, I looked around my yard and something was not right. My “Would Jesus Discriminate?” yard sign was gone.
Time to limit public smoking Tue, 15 Apr 2008 23:00:43 CDT Recently there seems to be a movement toward no smoking in public places (restaurants, bars, theaters, grocery stores, hair salons, etc.) as well as other businesses that attract a wide range of ages of customers.
Keep bandstand just as it is Tue, 15 Apr 2008 23:00:45 CDT When I first read that a group of people in La Crosse wanted to replace the bandstand in Riverside Park, my first thought was, “Oh, no, another group asking for money.” Then I wondered why.
Shut the door on wood boilers Tue, 15 Apr 2008 20:45:36 CDT Increased prices for petroleum and gas are almost certain to give us another air pollution problem, another of those unintended consequences and one already afflicting some residents of northern Wisconsin.
Air travelers deserve a lift Tue, 15 Apr 2008 20:45:36 CDT The airline industry likes to remind us it’s got a powerful incentive to keep passengers happy.
Ignore the fear, get the vaccines Tue, 15 Apr 2008 20:57:12 CDT It should be a no-brainer, should be but isn’t, this business of being vaccinated against disease. Yes many people do it, and yes it’s advice preached regularly by doctors and public health workers.
Leave boycotts for the powerless Tue, 15 Apr 2008 20:57:12 CDT Symbolic protests are a tool for the powerless. And powerless is a word no one would use to describe the leader of the free world.
Friday Finishers April 11, 2008 Tue, 15 Apr 2008 20:57:12 CDT Thumbs Up After a nasty little diversion engineered by Assembly Republicans, Wisconsin’s participation in the Great Lakes compact appears once more to be back on track. Gov. Jim Doyle announced a compromise had been reached among state legislators and called a special session next week to adopt the new set of rules restricting water diversions from the Great Lakes. The state compromise still contains the provision that any water diversions will require the approval of the governors of all eight states bordering the Great Lakes. But State Rep. Scott Gunderson, R-Waterford, who had opposed that provision, said this week he could live with it. We’re thankful that’s the case since the entire pact could well have unraveled without it and forced the entire compact back to the drawing board. Water resources are becoming more precious by the week as mounting fights over water rights in the South and West illustrate, and it’s paramount for Wisconsin to get its final draft in order and to get the final three states to sign on the dotted line to protect the lakes from being siphoned away.
Alcohol-free policies make sense for volunteer fire departments Thu, 17 Apr 2008 23:11:39 CDT Hats off to Galesville Fire Chief Dan Henderson for banning alcohol in the firehouse.
Why not just praise Heston? Thu, 17 Apr 2008 23:12:48 CDT This letter is in regard to columnist Jimmy Gillman’s opinion about Charlton Heston.
Willing to sacrifice for others? Thu, 17 Apr 2008 23:12:50 CDT As I have watched fuel prices soar, I have also watched area citizens. What I have observed are many cars with only one person in them. One day I was returning home as school was dismissed.
Stop the pay discrimination Thu, 17 Apr 2008 23:12:46 CDT Equal Pay Day is Tuesday, April 22. The American Association of University Women has a proud history of advocating for equal pay for women. AAUW’s Public Policy Program states that AAUW is committed to supporting “vigorous enforcement of employment antidiscrimination statutes.”
We can discipline drug fakers Sat, 19 Apr 2008 12:23:29 CDT The story came and went quietly this week, but it deserved more than to be drowned out by candidates’ latest accusations because its implications will last long after Clinton/McCain/Obama has left the White House.
Remember those who serve, sacrifice Sat, 19 Apr 2008 12:27:44 CDT Three and a half years ago, the war in Iraq dealt Racine its first personal blow. Several subsequent fatalities have since stung the area.
Friday Finishers April 18, 2008 Sat, 19 Apr 2008 12:27:44 CDT Thumbs Up “I’ve got $3.43, do I hear $3.51 — I’ve got $3.51, do I hear four dollars?” The way pump prices have jetted upward in the past month, you would almost think an auctioneer was plumping the prices higher. Sad to say the peak summer driving season when demand rises and prices go along with them is many weeks away. Some analysts are predicting that the $4-a-gallon mark will be reached when that happens. What’s perhaps more confusing — no, irritating — is that the run-up in gas prices and other fuels comes at a time when oil inventories are strong and consumption is relatively flat. Some oil industry analysts say the price spike is due to market forces as investors move money into the commodities market and away from the falling dollar. The price of crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange is up 20 percent since the start of the year. It figures — someone had to be making money on this. Maybe now is a good time to revise those summer travel plans.
It’s Unified’s time to demand more Sat, 19 Apr 2008 12:27:44 CDT This is no time to settle. After Tom Hicks’ tenure spiraled from promise to pits, the last thing the Racine Unified School District needs is to be content picking a superintendent who’ll merely run in place for a few years before moving on.
Free-market solutions are best for health care Tue, 22 Apr 2008 23:20:00 -0500 Health care is not a problem that has a quick and reasonable fix. There is simply no magic bullet that will address every real and perceived failing of the system. Anyone who has ever tried to make perfect sense of their insurance policy or go through a hospital bill line-by-line knows that there’s more to the problem than meets the eye.
Recognize the falacies about biofuels Tue, 22 Apr 2008 23:20:02 -0500 STEVENS POINT, Wis. The official bogeyman of Earth Week 2008 is biofuels.
Emergency Medical Dispatch will improve handling of emergencies Tue, 22 Apr 2008 23:19:59 -0500 It’s good news that the La Crosse area now has Emergency Medical Dispatch, and that it seems to have been implemented without problems.
Don’t criticize Catholic faith Tue, 22 Apr 2008 23:20:15 -0500 Bill Maher found it necessary to cut down the Catholic faith on HBO national TV, calling it a cult, etc. Hey, Bill, why don’t you have something to say about the Muslim religion? Or could it be that you are afraid about retaliation and what they might say or, more importantly, do. I wonder? Cluck, cluck, cluck.
Obama was refreshing Tue, 22 Apr 2008 23:20:16 -0500 I think it would be hard to find an out-of-work person in Ohio or Pennsylvania who would not agree with Barack Obama’s so-called “elitist” remarks he made about them being bitter about their situation. It’s true, I am quite sure they are bitter, so what is all the fuss about? Spin, spin, spin. Ad nauseum
La Crosse feels like home Tue, 22 Apr 2008 23:20:18 -0500 I’d like to thank KJ Lang for her story on April 13 about feeling at home in La Crosse. Although I don’t live in
Don’t shoot geese at Sparta lake Tue, 22 Apr 2008 23:20:20 -0500 The Sparta City Council is going ahead with the plans to shoot geese around Perch Lake in June despite the recommendations of the Humane Society. This will only be a short-term solution and will result in the deaths of innocent wildlife.
Come on, people, let’s drive nice’ Tue, 22 Apr 2008 23:20:21 -0500 I am taking a moment to comment on something I have been noticing more frequently in the La Crosse area. I know, everyone complains about other people’s driving and the experiences they have with “road rage.” I myself am no saint, but my experiences over the last couple days have led me to at least attempt to open some eyes.
Honor our everyday heroes Tue, 22 Apr 2008 23:20:23 -0500 There are many of our fellow citizens who are heroes those in the military, serving in Iraq and all over the world, as well as those who we encounter on a daily basis the doctors, the nurses, the firefighters, police officers and others who help us, heal us and save us from danger.
Raleigh relents on daily grind Tue, 22 Apr 2008 18:57:57 -0500 The citizens of Raleigh, N.C., can grind their garbage again. It’s good news for Racine-based In-Sink-Erator, world’s largest maker of garbage disposers, but the odd thing about this odd little story is how thin the evidence was that prompted the city of Raleigh to act.
Support troops the right way Tue, 22 Apr 2008 18:57:57 -0500 Following in the tracks of the unarmored Humvees is the it-jams-a-lot rifle. Both should raise red flags about the government’s forethought in looking after troops. Both should awaken the military to the severe problem it obviously has in equipping troops with reliable gear, and the rest of us should look at how much money could be diverted to other purposes.

Here are more reasons to fight dangerous alcohol abuse Wed, 23 Apr 2008 23:09:12 -0500 If you have any doubts that Wisconsin has a dangerous culture of alcohol abuse, the latest national statistics about drunken driving should put those doubts to rest.
Understanding the Tibet issue Wed, 23 Apr 2008 23:08:58 -0500 With the upcoming Olympics in China, an issue has resurfaced regarding Tibet. The legal question is whether Tibet is a part of China or independent, as claimed by the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetans.
Visit women’s resource agency Wed, 23 Apr 2008 23:09:04 -0500 I’m supposed to be writing an article that April is Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Awareness month, but I find myself cogitating about community interactions instead.
Police officer was very kind Wed, 23 Apr 2008 23:09:00 -0500 A week ago, my two grandsons and I were leaving the Children’s Museum. As parking is at a premium downtown, I parked in a two-hour spot on a dead end road. I saw one of the police parking officers getting out of his vehicle close to my vehicle.
Not legitimate commentary Wed, 23 Apr 2008 23:09:02 -0500 Tuesday’s column from a nobody at the Philly Inquirer is not legitimate commentary. It is from the right-wing noise machine. If you read it closely, you can feel the underlying racism from the writer. It is palpable.
No need for two Rochesters Wed, 23 Apr 2008 19:35:55 -0500 The two Rochesters — the village and town — each took one more step last week on what has seemed a long, long road toward consolidation.
Is EPA playing politics with science and policy setting? Thu, 24 Apr 2008 23:08:25 -0500 In a new survey of scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency, more than half of those who responded said they had experienced political interference in their work.
Conservation will play larger role Thu, 24 Apr 2008 23:07:58 -0500 We are living in an oil-dependent world. People are gobbling up oil and other fossil fuels faster than ever. By 2006, U.S. consumption went up to 20.7 million barrels a day. This is a 3.5 percent increase from 2003, at a time when prices doubled.
Thinking about Mother’s Day Thu, 24 Apr 2008 23:07:59 -0500 I was just thinking about my mother since Mother’s Day is approaching, and thought of a line I’d written in a poem I wrote her when I was a child. It read, “Thanks for scrubbing on your hands and knees and giving the dog a bath so it won’t get fleas.”
Informative show was on too late Thu, 24 Apr 2008 23:08:02 -0500 On April 19, I was lying in bed watching the news on WKBT-TV waiting to watch a rerun of “CSI: Miami” when appeared an educational program on “teenagers and alcohol abuse.” This was at 10:35 p.m. I’m not sure what viewers they were trying to educate at that time.
All are needed to combat poverty Thu, 24 Apr 2008 23:08:04 -0500 A Tribune editorial April 21 said, “the answers to poverty, related issues will be education and job growth.” I agree; these are two components. However, it takes more than a high school education and a new minimum-paying job to get children out of poverty.
